Borayin Larios
As a scholar of contemporary religion, my main methodological approach is interdisciplinary. I am an advocate for a combined approach of cultural anthropology, religious studies, and historical philology. As a researcher, I attempt to understand the contemporary religious traditions of India within a deep awareness of its classical past.
I am a P.I. for the EU Synergy grant MANTRAMS - Mantras in religion, media and society in global Southern Asia (Fall 2024-2030). https://mantrams.univie.ac.at/ The research project will for the first time develop a global history and anthropology of mantras and will create extensive digital sound, visual and textual archives for this purpose.
My first book entitled "Embodying the Vedas: Traditional Vedic Schools of Contemporary Maharashtra" (2017) is available in open access from De Gruyter as well as here. I have also published several articles on the contemporary Vedic traditions. Evolving from this interest I am currently revisiting the phenomenon of Mantras as a reserach focus. Another main research interest revolves around popular and everyday Hinduism expressed at wayside shrines in Indian cities. Other interests include material religion, Hindu nationalism, Yoga and Tantra traditions and Ethno-Indology as a research method.
