This paper delivers actionable recommendations towards building a rationale for activating and promoting Underground Built Heritage (UBH) based on the nexus heritage, territory and society, and making use of existing literature and findings from five international cases. The research was conducted in the framework of the working group on Planning Approaches of the COST Action Underground4value. The analysis of the cases aims to provide guidelines for this working group and to benchmark good practices in activating UBH. It highlights the importance of community-led initiatives, leadership and dialogue and power sharing between the local/regional authorities and communities aiming for better understanding of the potential of UBH. The successes and/or failures of the five cases emphasise the importance of knowledge and experience in participatory approaches. Success was verified, when effectiveness and democratic principles were combined in the planning process, and local history is in...

Key words: accessibility, ICT, Public spaces, green spaces, urban design, urban sustainability

An increasing interaction between digital media (smartphones, smartwatches and tablets) and public open spaces (parks, gardens, squares, etc.) is gaining ground and evolving. The potential and the risks of the technology ubiquitousness is drawing attention of social scientists, urban planners and ICT experts and developers.
The COST Action "CyberParks" aimed at shedding light on this urban phenome - the interweaving of new technologies into public open spaces. Two key questions guided the action: how ICTs can increase the use of public open (green) spaces, and how ICT can best support the design and implementation of public spaces. It was fundamental to increase the knowledge on the contribution new technologies play in the transformation of our cities. A significant outcome was the evidence that cyberisation, apart from the very technical aspects, can be an easier way to foster social inclusion. This paper addresses some reflexions on role of technology to create more inclusive public open spaces.

Abstract - How people use public spaces varies according to the cities and social groups, and changes over time. This change may become more intensive with the increasing pervasiveness of technology. ICTs and their devices are opening new possibilities to enjoy public spaces and interact with others and the environment. This makes the call for advancing insights on how people use urban spaces, what their needs and preferences are, and the role ITC plays in people’s engagement with spaces.
The workshop organised in February 2017 in Lisbon offered a good opportunity to gather meaningful data on these issues. Participants, coming from 10 different European countries, answered an online survey about their outdoors behaviours, and the values given to public spaces and digital technology. The view of young and prospective
experts is therefore a valuable source to better understand the process of establishing participative strategies towards responsible public spaces, and how to approach ICTs to support co-creation and inclusiveness in different European frameworks. This chapter
presents an analysis of this survey.

Abstract - This contribution intends to strengthen the wide potential of co-created and mediated public spaces, both in urban and in rural environments. Landscapes should become an opportunity to reinforce the networks of public spaces to foster the relationship between cultural heritage and creativity. We believe that the future of Italy and of the Marche Region in particular, depends largely on the promotion of cultural
heritage and this with the innovative and creative bonds that culture should have with landscapes. Doing it means pointing out the fundamental role of planning as a challenge for coordinating different territorial approaches, the inefficiency or failure of which often results in setbacks and missed targets. The Marche Advanced Cultural Districts
represent a new strategic approach to strenghten culture and creativity and local communities. The economic recovery represents a challenge for the future, especially after the 2016 earthquakes, which destroyed the greatest part of the region’s cultural heritage.

The work aims to strengthen the belief that the future of territorial development of intermediate regions largely depends on a more effective marketing of local cultural heritage. The role of planning is crucial for cultural landscapes creation. The CLLD -and in a certain way ITI- have been issued in a new form to meet such an issue. The Cultural Districts (DCE) initiative in Marche Region shows a seminal attempt to bring new life to local governance, by boosting impulses to new cultural and creative initiatives (sharing economy, creative commons and many more).
