I focus more on the example of the gas factory of Athens, a challenging, though not unique, example where the researcher is called upon to document the past of an industry or a productive activity, without the safety of collected documents or a complete corporate record of this activity. I use the term Ground Zero to denote this contradiction of the absence of historical records: I describe by this term the moment when a researcher has to examine a historical economic phenomenon without a certain amount of data. Gas companies operated thanks to an urban pipe network that extended inside the boundaries of a city. Most gas companies took over public lighting, and from 1890 onwards the supply of energy (lighting, heating, appliances) to residences and offices. From my archival investigation, it emerged that the gas lighting plants of some cities belonged to the local government and others to private individuals. The documentation of the historical route of this energy and its establishments in Greece was a challenging task. I deem that the mapping of this route will prove useful to future researchers.

As a result, libraries and archival units apply new and innovative information systems to manage and exploit their archival collections for education and research purposes.
Design/methodology/approach – The current research took place under the THE.ME.DO.COM EPAnEK (2014-2020) project which had as the main goal to develop two web platforms for preservation, documentation, management and dissemination of the University of Thessaly archival collections, which constituted its Historical Archive. For this purpose, the Archivematica, AtoM and VuFind open-source information systems were configured and integrated, while innovative metadata creation coding was created for the project.
Findings – Digital archival items were preserved and enriched with high-quality metadata in Archivematica, uploaded and described according to international standards in AtoM and distributed with smart search routines with VuFind. The integrated platform implementation resulted in an efficient automated approach to managing the University of Thessaly archives and archival collections which comprised different digital object formats and included a high volume of digital items, making THE.ME.DO.COM a very successful project example.
Originality/value – The University of Thessaly Historical Archive was used as a paradigm for implementing a new way to deal with complex archival collections. Other University Libraries or Archival Services could easily utilize the project results.

It aims at creating alternative readings of the Revolution and at highlighting different approaches to it through the narrative of historical characters who lived at the time. REVAthens aims to renegotiate banal narratives of the Revolution by highlighting new perspectives on historical events and historical subjects that may challenge and/or break down previous perceptions and/or stereotypes. The project utilizes the methodology of museum theater with the aim of shaping examples of historical subjects who lived during the Revolution of 1821 in Athens and who mediate their experiences to a contemporary audience through a digital application with game elements.

Purpose - In an era that any information is searched and understood in a digital environment there is still workload to be taken on a physical basis. Small and larger corporations keep abandoning their archives in dark storerooms. In order to bring these stories into the light of history and to broaden the available sources for researchers, this article describes the efforts taken on the acquisition and preservation of industrial archives in Greece and discusses the steps that young archivists could follow for enriching business archives deposits.
Design/methodology/approach - The text recounts different efforts of managing industrial archives (acquisition, appraisal). This paper is mainly a retrospective that aims to summarize different cases in order to uncover the challenges of this field for young archivists.
One of this text's assets is the discussion about the ways that the archival community has dealt with business archives and what could be done in terms of archives management policy. This article will prove useful to young archivists interested in the process of preserving historical business archives and managing future accruals.

Historians have already mentioned the interconnections between tuberculosis and the world of labor. Though a transmittable disease, before WWII, TB was often regarded as an occupational disease. In my text I highlight how the working classes in Greece adopted the mainstream medical discourse that hazardous working conditions favored tuberculosis in their rhetoric. Thus, my narration examines the early discourses on dirty working places and how these ideas where transformed into causes for public protest inside and outside Greek sanatoria. What were these demonstrators claiming for? How did their protests reform union politics and Social Welfare Acts? It seems that protesting carriers of the TB bacillus introduced the questions of social welfare and social insurance to their unions. The topics discussed are the outcome of an extended doctoral research in pre-WWII sanatoria archives, newspapers, medical and legal texts.

Though most of the plant’s equipment has been maintained (TICCIH Bulletin n.62), only a few items out of the company’s archive have survived up today. Since 1984 that the Athens Municipal Gasworks Company (as it was renamed, after the French company dropped out in 1937) stopped operating, the premises were sealed till the mid-1990s. During that obscure period, the factory’s archive was carried away and no one heard anything of it in the years to come. This paper presents the technical drawings collection and discusses the need of preserving business archives.

Bank archives, local council's discussions, State archives, labor unions' documents, 19th c. British and American publications and european cities' archives have been visited in order to document a for many decades left in the dust past. Inside the publication's chapters, the readers may find texts on the first applications of illuminating gas in Europe, the local gasworks' production line, the gasworkers and their working conditions, the distribution system of illuminating gas, coal gas uses in everyday life, the neighbourhood next to the gasworks and finally on variable restorations of gasworks heritage around Europe. Due to a bibliographical shortage in gasworks history, this museum catalogue aims to enlighten readers about gasworks, gas distribution networks and the interrelations connecting the gas industry with city life. The publication might prove interesting/useful to industrial history, business history, history of technology, labor history, social history, urban history and industrial heritage & archaeology readers/researchers. The book's texts are accompanied by historic and recent photos, depicting among others gasworks equipment and daily labor in the plant. The fact that Athens unit's archive has not been located since its closure makes this book a major contribution to preserving the second oldest in the greek capital industry's past.

Patients in Britain and America were advised to embark on ships and join therapeutic sea-routes. The introduction of climatic therapy in the medical rhetoric transformed once and for all the world map by introducing medical geographies. The patients along with doctors started searching for healing places across their homelands and the civilized west. Across Europe, America and Oceania healing lands appeared and healing cities were founded. Sanatoria -a new type of healthcare foundation- expanded rapidly in Greece during the first decades of the 20th c. and represented the appliance of medical climatology. The foundation of sanatoria extended the early modern comprehension of locus through the notions of inclusion, exclusion and healing, while at the same time these foundations incorporated technological and architectural innovations. The sanatorium movement and the economic development that followed it introduced to the patients areas, which used to serve as confined islands in the urban plan. The rhetoric of fear against the contagious bacillus vs. enthusiasm for the promised economic growth placed the inhabitants of those therapeutic lands in the center of a long-lasting public discussion. This paper will explore the case of an Athenian suburb, which attracted rich and poor tubercular patients for decades (1880-1930). There will be a focus on the variability of patients’ approaches to the healing lands. Workers resided in tents inside the forests, wealthy tuberculars rented rooms, locals made profit out of their hope for cure and doctors placed their gaze on this still formless economy. The next step was the transformation of the neighbouring mountain of Penteli into a health park consisted of public and private sanatoria. This is the outcome of a doctoral research conducted in public archives and private archives (sanatorium archives, local administration archives, ministries’ archives, legal texts, doctors’ treatises) in Athens. The idea of the sanatorium is being approached as a new business venture inside the sociopolitical context of its era. The paper aims to discuss apart from the evolution of climatic therapy into an economic practice which affected doctors, patients, the role of a disease and patients in the making of urban space in contemporary Athens.

Τα βιομηχανικά αρχεία έχουν συνδεθεί στην ελληνική ιστοριογραφία με διάφορους τομείς της ιστορικής επιστήμης, όπως η ιστορία της τεχνολογίας, η ιστορίας της εργασίας, η κοινωνική ιστορία, η ιστορία της υγείας, η οικονομική ιστορία και η ιστορία του φύλου. Σύμφωνα με τη χάρτα του Tagil, η καταγραφή αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο μέρος της μελέτης της βιομηχανικής κληρονομιάς. Η πραγματικότητα είναι αρκετά διαφορετική. Στο επίκεντρο της ανακοίνωσης θα βρεθούν δύο περιπτώσεις μελέτης και τα μεθοδολογικά προβλήματα που προέκυψαν στη διάρκεια τους. Η πρώτη αφορά στο ερευνητικό πρόγραμμα που πραγματοποιήθηκε με πρωτοβουλία και χρηματοδότηση του Π.Ι.Ο.Π. στο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας για την καταγραφή των προβιομηχανικών εργαστηρίων του Πηλίου. Είτε λόγω παλαιότητας είτε λόγω της μικρής τους κλίμακας, τα αρχεία αυτών των εγκαταστάσεων συχνά αφήνονται στη φθορά του χρόνου. Το δεύτερο παράδειγμα προέρχεται από μία εντελώς διαφορετική περίπτωση: το εργοστάσιο φωταερίου της Αθήνας. Μία από τις γνωστότερες και παλαιότερες βιομηχανίες της Αθήνας, της οποίας όμως το αρχείο επίσης δεν διασώθηκε. Η ανακοίνωση θα παρουσιάσει τα μονοπάτια που ακολούθησε ο ερευνητής προκειμένου να ανασυνθέσει και να τεκμηριώσει το παρελθόν της πρώτης μονάδας παραγωγής ενέργειας της χώρας. Η μουσειακή αναπαράσταση του Βιομηχανικού Μουσείου Φωταερίου, το οποίο προέκυψε από αυτή την έρευνα, επιβεβαιώνει το πολυσχιδές των ερευνητικών διαδρομών, καθώς από τις τελευταίες προέκυψαν αρχειακά τεκμήρια, δημοσιεύματα του ημερήσιου τύπου και οπτικοακουστικό υλικό. Η ανακοίνωση επιθυμεί να αναδείξει τις εναλλακτικές αλλά και τα προβλήματα με τα οποία βρίσκεται αντιμέτωπος ο ιστορικός, όταν απουσιάζουν τα βιομηχανικά αρχεία. Πως τοποθετείται η νομοθεσία απέναντι στα αρχεία των επιχειρήσεων; Πως μπορούμε να προστατέψουμε τα βιομηχανικά αρχεία από τη λήθη και την καταστροφή; Σε ποιο βαθμό μπορούν οι προφορικές μαρτυρίες να καλύψουν την απουσία του αρχείου και να αναβιώσουν το ιστορικό παρελθόν; Πόσο βιώσιμο είναι ένα πλάνο διάσωσης των βιομηχανικών αρχείων και ποια μπορεί να είναι η συμβολή της διεπιστημονικότητας σε μία τέτοια προσπάθεια;

Typically, app and game developers borrow the widely accepted versions of the past and invest in digital presentation of battles and landscapes. In the case of the REVAthens program "Reviving life in revolutionary Athens", the project team chose to look for evidence concerning the daily life of the population in Athens before and during the 1821 War of Independence. Although this was not a historiographical project, the members of the project team agreed that an understanding of the pre-revolutionary social environment was an important precondition for the implementation scenario.

For this reason, we divided the book into two parts, one theoretical and one applied. The first part consists of two chapters. The first examines the "discovery" of archives by historians, their relevance to history, and the emergence of archival studies as an autonomous field. In the second chapter, the archival theory is presented and the basic archival principles are analyzed. The second part of the book mainly concerns the applied part of archival jobs and organizes archival workload in three cycles corresponding to three chapters (the cycle of acquisition, the cycle of intellectual control, the cycle of promotion and access). The description of archival work is detailed and accompanied by examples and good practices. For the acquisition cycle, we run all initiations that an archivist should take, listing questions that archivists often have. For the intellectual part, there is considerable discussion of arrangement methods, and we present several of the standards and schemas that archivists use today when describing material. Finally, for the third cycle, we list some key issues that professionals must deal with about substrate damage and the great challenge of promoting archival material to the public.

Η ανακοίνωση επιθυμεί να αναδείξει τις εναλλακτικές αλλά και τα προβλήματα με τα οποία βρίσκεται αντιμέτωπος ο ιστορικός, όταν απουσιάζουν τα βιομηχανικά αρχεία. Πως τοποθετείται η νομοθεσία απέναντι στα αρχεία των επιχειρήσεων; Πως μπορούμε να προστατέψουμε τα βιομηχανικά αρχεία από τη λήθη και την καταστροφή; Σε ποιο βαθμό μπορούν οι προφορικές μαρτυρίες να καλύψουν την απουσία του αρχείου και να αναβιώσουν το ιστορικό παρελθόν; Πόσο βιώσιμο είναι ένα πλάνο διάσωσης των βιομηχανικών αρχείων και ποια μπορεί να είναι η συμβολή της διεπιστημονικότητας σε μία τέτοια προσπάθεια;
