EnglishThis article analyses the first intervention of Gnatho in Eunuchus paying attention to his personal description and to the information he provides about his new lifestyle, wich is different from that of the previous parasites. His comparison with Plautine models will allow us to glimpse the use that Terence does of the caricature and the literary parody, as well as the presence of a delicate mockery of the philosophy.

On the one hand, the examination of the context and of the skeptic motif at the strictly literary level allows us to confirm the footprint of the Helle-nistic epigram as a source of inspiration, as well as the thorough work of rewriting carried out by the poet from Bilbilis. On the other hand, the consideration of the epigram as an ekphrastic product gives evidence of the relevance of artistic manifestations in Martial's text, while also highlighting the reciprocal influence of art and poetry in his work.

After presenting an overview that recalls how personal attack was a key element in this genre, the paper focusses on descriptions of what is conventionally called regular satire, although Varro is also included in order to complete our vision. A diachronic study of depictions of this kind of characters invites us to think that this is a recurring topic in the aforementioned poetry, a topic which apparently tends to increase over time, providing portraits of fake-wise men always in a negative sense. Despite the fact that judging the purpose is complicated, its presence in satirical texts suggests a criticism of moral actitudes on most occasions.
