This is because it provides a picture of the language used by the people themselves, which differed from the language in which literary works were written and which is deemed the standard. This work is therefore based on the extensive inscription materials of diverse types (sepulchral, votive, honorary...) found in the territory of the Roman province of Dalmatia. Among the inspected epigraphic monuments, those on which deviations in language in comparison to the norms of classical Latin may be seen were highlighted. To the greatest extent, research concentrated on changes in the framework of phonetics, because in short and concise forms such as the texts in these inscriptions they are the most relevant for analysis and obtaining specific results.

To the greatest extent, research concentrated on changes in the framework of phonetics, because in short and concise forms such as the texts in these inscriptions they are the most relevant for analysis and obtaining specific results. The objective of this work is to delve deeper into the problems pertaining to Vulgar Latin traits and see what they say about the Latin language that was used in the territory of Roman Dalmatia.

Splitting up the text structures into constituent elements resulted in the identification of eight groups, depending on both the order of these elements and their combinations. By examining and analysing the structures of texts, it is the aim of this article to determine which scheme(s) would be most typical for the region and whether some particular regional features exist, and, if so, to see what they look like, which elements are the commonest among them, and what do the rarely used elements and formulas tell us about them. The analysis has shown that votive texts from Liburnia display a diversity of combinations and occurrences of textual elements that vary according to the region in which they were set up; thus, the wealthier and more Romanised regions show a greater tendency towards more elaborate structures. The military environment of the legionary camp in Burnum stands out for its above average mentioning of the dedicator’s service, while in other, less Romanised regions inscriptions with simple structures dominate.

One of the most important Roman deities, and part of the Capitoline Triad, was Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and martial prowess. Thus her cult likewise arrived in this area and became part of the spiritual culture of the local population. Her presence is evidenced mostly by epigraphic monuments and to a lesser extent by figurines, and on the basis of these, this paper will research the presence and extent of her worship in Histria. Special attention will be paid to questions arising with respect to syncretism of one of the autochthonous deities with Minerva, and to the existence and location of her shrine within the colony of Pola.
