The primary objectives of the research were to determine the degree of forecast utilization in purchasing, identify the types of firms utilizing purchasing forecasts, describe the items most commonly forecasted, and identify the forecasting methods used. The findings suggest that while most purchasing departments placed a relatively high level of importance on forecasting, judgment-based forecasting techniques were heavily relied upon and methods of forecast improvement were not widely employed. Additionally, forecasting by purchasing departments was found to be a relatively recent phenomenon. The findings also revealed that purchasing departments may not be taking full advantage of the many forecasting and forecast improvement techniques available.

The objectives of the study were to develop the literature‐based just‐in‐time (JIT) machine shop model and to study empirically the changes taking place in the operation of machine shops in response to increasing demands by customers for JIT deliveries of products. Determines basic facility operating characteristics, machine operator characteristics, shopfloor control policies, and overall shop performance characteristics of machine shops having a significant level of sales to JIT customers. Discusses these findings with respect to the JIT machine shop model described in the previous literature. Supplies descriptive information for machine shops having little or no sales to JIT customers, to identify operating differences between the two classes of machine shops.

This article presents the results of a survey regarding the various elements of the quality improvement programs employed by motor carriers, the design of these programs, and the successes attributed to them. Related areas in need of further research are also discussed.

This has placed added importance on carrier selection from the buyer perspective. Previous research has identified criteria important to the carrier selection process, however buyers are left with no objective means for measuring carrier performance within these factor areas. This paper suggests a method for combining managers' subjective preferences with objective measurements when evaluating carriers for potential use. A carrier selection example is presented.

Initially, the paper examines the information needs and alternatives in supply chain management. In the second part, the paper identifies different sets of factors that are likely to influence information sharing with suppliers, from the manufacturers’ point of view. Results from a Finnish Manufacturing industry survey show that manufacturers provided substantial information on demand data, production schedules, and inventories to their suppliers. Respondents perceived delivery performance measured by the timeliness, accuracy, and defect rate of deliveries as the primary incentives for supplier collaboration. On the other hand, supplier image and the market in which the supplier operates were found to be less relevant in determining the intensity of collaboration.
