The sampling program was conducted in study sites located on a confluence between different order streams during an annual cycle. Samples were also taken every two hours during the daylight period in high and low water conditions. The relationship between drift and cellular reproduction was evaluated by valve length biometrics analysis. C. placentula var. euglypta drift was continuous; its density was not always dependent on periphyton density in each locality. C. placentula var. euglypta drift could be related to abiotic factors such as temperature and flow during the annual cycle. There were significant differences between periphyton and drift valve lengths. Moreover, drift can be associated with cellular reproduction because density was higher when valve lengths were shorter at different hours of the day. C. placentula...

This paper aims to assess spatial and temporal variations of physical and chemical parameters of the river. Six sampling sites and six sampling campaigns were developed. During the period 2007-2008, wet and dry seasons were included. A statistical analysis was carried out with 23 physical and chemical variables. Then, a new statistical analysis was carried out including the Riparian Corridors Quality Index and the physical and chemical variables (24 variables). Considering a multivariate system, analysis of variance, principal component analysis and cluster analysis were used. From the statistical analysis, the river was divided into two zones with different degrees of contamination. The most polluted zone is due to pollution inputs of urban, industrial and agricultural sources. This area showed a remarkable deterioration in water quality, mainly due to wastewater discharges. According to Riparian Quality, better results were found in sections of poor water quality, due to the fact that the river bank forest was less degraded downstream of the sewage discharge.

In this paper, the structure and composition of benthic, drifting and marginal macroinvertebrate assemblages are analyzed in the lowland river Ctalamochita (Córdoba, Argentina). The assemblages were studied in an annual cycle; a comparison among the composition of benthos, drift and marginal fauna was carried out; and size structure of the assemblages was characterized. Samples were obtained from two sites: a rural and an urban site. In total 73 taxa of aquatic macroinvertebrates were collected. Benthos was characterized by Chironomidae and Oligochaeta; marginal fauna was mainly constituted by Coleoptera, Heteroptera, Decapoda, the Trichoptera Nectopsyche sp., Ephemeroptera and Odonata. Drifting assemblage was composed by macroinvertebrates from local and remote upstream benthos, and from the marginal zone. Marginal fauna diversity was higher than benthos and drift. Total biomass of the assemblages pooled together was relatively equitably among size classes. Larger size classes consisted of organisms from the marginal zone whereas the smallest ones were composed by benthic and drifting organisms. In the study area there is habitat partitioning in the lateral dimension of the river. Marginal fauna was more diverse due to the asymmetry of transport and deposit processes, which generate a heterogeneous habitat in the bankside. The relation between fine substrate and high current velocity determines an unstable habitat in the central channel, which makes colonization by benthic macroinvertebrates difficult.

Summary. - The objective of this paper is to analyze the ecological changes operated in the Cruz del Eje river basin, through interpretation of the socioeconomic history, an anthropological scale, as evidence of changes in land and water usage. The periods considered were Indian era (6000 AC- 1528), Colonial era (1528 -1810), Creole era (18l0 -1880) and Alluvial era (1880 onwards). It is developed the chronology of those historical events that caused changes, in relevant settings riverscape. Interventions and activities are recognized as factors known causing the decline of biodiversity, the increased erosion and the deterioration of water quality.

A historiography searching about territorial shifts in Carcarañá subasin highlands, (Cordoba, Argentina), during different periods of argentine history is achieved. Attention is recalled to the events that drive ecological consequences over river ecology such us changes on land and water uses, exotic introductions, urbanizations and infrastructure constructions. Actual problems emerging from these processes and hazardous activities against environmental quality are point up. Historical river reconstructions allow hypothesis generations derived from fluvial ecology theoretical frameworks. Key words: social changes, ecological changes, fluvial ecology.

The environmental quality index was composed of subindexes based on observable and measurable indicators. Riverbank forest quality, biodiversity surrogates and man activities and disturbances were indicators of riverbank quality. Water quality was measured by chemical indicators and by an index based on benthic macroinvertebrates composition at family level. Adapted field spreadsheets and methodology for obtaining data are shown in the study. Indexes were calculated from scores assigned to variable ranges; then a quality judgment was produced.
