Son algo así como sermones programáticas que el nuevo Magister, iniciado en la Universidad, debía predicar en frente del claustro de maestros. Todo su oficio teológico posterior está condensado en el Principium. Se trata de la visión anticipada, germinal, reflexiva, que Santo Tomás tenía de su misma labor magisterial futura. Son los primeros chispazos que luego iluminarían y encenderían a la Iglesia y al mundo entero. El Rigans Montes, en el que se expresa la misión ministerial del teólogo educador, sin duda ha recibido mayor atención que el Hic est liber, en el que se enfatiza el mensaje que el teólogo transmite: la sacra Scriptura. Ambos deben leerse conjuntamente. En esta comunicación nos concentraremos en la segunda de las lecciones inaugurales, que fue promulgada el primer día de clases (resumptio) posterior a la inceptio (Rigans montes), posiblemente el 17 de junio de 1256 (fray Tomás tenía 31 años, cuando la promoción al magisterio exigía reglamentariamente la edad de 35). Como dictaba el estatuto de la Universidad de París, el Hic est liber se estructura en dos grandes partes: una recomendación, elogio, encomio o alabanza de la Sagrada Escritura (commendatio sacrae Scripturae) y una división de los libros bíblicos (partitio sacrae Scripturae). Quizás este descuido teórico, de un tema tan culturalmente relevante para nuestra sociedad contemporánea, se deba a una supuesta mirada pesimista del Aquinate sobre lo femenino. Efectivamente, desde una visión superficial, podría sacarse esta conclusión a partir de la lectura de toda una serie de pasajes desafortunados tomados de la filosofía aristotélica. Más aún, situados en una postura teológica, las Espístolas Paulinas, que Santo Tomás cita y comenta, parecerían mostrar que no es distinta la visión que se tiene de la mujer desde la Revelación (la mujer como gloria viri, la capitalidad del varón y la sujeción de la mujer, el mandato de usar velo, la prohibición de enseñanza, etc.). Sin embargo, nuestro trabajo se propone mostrar que dicha posición es injusta. Creada a imagen de Dios, la mujer tiene la gran vocación de recibir y entregar vida. Aunque una vez trajo muerte, no obstante, su misión es ser nuntia salutis. Esta mirada profunda y renovada de Santo Tomás, Doctor Feminitatis, sobre la mujer, más aún, la mujer misma, ofrece una gran esperanza para la condición humana presente.

La paternidad y la filiación se predican, en primer lugar, de las personas divinas 1. Las mismas ... more La paternidad y la filiación se predican, en primer lugar, de las personas divinas 1. Las mismas personas divinas son para Santo Tomás relaciones subsistentes. Esto no es otra cosa que decir que la misma persona del Padre en la Trinidad es su relación de principio u origen respecto del Hijo al que le comunica su misma naturaleza, y que la misma persona del Hijo es su relación de principiado, originado o engendrado eternamente por el Padre2. La identidad personal del Padre y del Hijo, su personalidad, se nos escaparía totalmente si no las entendemos en su reciprocidad. El fundamento de estas relaciones de oposición reales que subsisten en Dios está en las procesiones divinas, es decir, operaciones inmanentes vitales de conocimiento y amor. En concreto, nos interesa aquella acción por la que el Padre dice o pronuncia eternamente su Verbo, el Hijo o Imagen. Santo Tomás, siguiendo la tradición agustiniana, estudia esta procesión, que es la generación, desde la noción de verbum ("In principio erat Verbum" Jn 1, 1). Dios Padre profiere una palabra interior, del corazón, que es distinta de Él mismo (aunque no algo otro distinto, al modo de una naturaleza diversa)3, pero permanece en Él. El Hijo brota en la intimidad de la Trinidad como fruto de una emanación inteligible, de un acto fecundo de dicción del Padre. En cuanto Verbo, el Hijo representa perfectamente a aquel que lo dice, es Imagen total suya, por esto es precisamente su Hijo, en la medida en que tiene su misma naturaleza (simple, perfecta, infinita, inmutable, eterna, una, omnisciente, omnipotente, etc.). Al conocerse comprehensivamente a Sí mismo, por vía del intelecto, el Padre dice o engendra a su Hijo, siendo principio de su origen y al cual le otorga toda la perfección de su naturaleza (son consubstanciales), y el Hijo expresa cabalmente lo que Dios es. En primer lugar, se analiza en qué sentido la razón vuelve sobre sí de modo entitativo o metafísico: la razón como potencia espiritual del alma humana subsistente. En segundo lugar, de qué manera la razón retorna hacia sí operativamente hablando, es decir, entendiéndose completamente a sí misma. Este segundo sentido accidental de la reditio, se ha subdivido, desde San Agustín, en esencial y existencial. El tratamiento de cómo el hombre conoce que existe, habitual y actualmente, y qué es, según las dos primeras operaciones intelectuales, será el objetivo de la segunda parte de la ponencia. Con esto puede vislumbrarse la importancia de la vida recogida e íntima propia del homo rediens.

En el mundo de hoy podemos encontrar, respecto de este tema, dos vicios extremos. Por un lado, por exceso, vemos muchos hombres que viven de manera ensimismada, individualista, egoísta y soberbia, es decir, que valoran la realidad y a los demás únicamente por la utilidad o conveniencia propia. El conocimiento y amor de sí mismo, en este sentido, sería para ellos lo más importante, a punto tal que nada harían por los demás, sino todo para sí mismos. Para esta clase de personas, la vida virtuosa consistiría en liberarse, es decir, en ser sí mismo a costa de todo. Por otro lado, por defecto, vemos muchos hombres que viven de manera alterada, enajenada o volcada hacia afuera, es decir, que consideran que vivir para los demás desinteresadamente supone matar al sí mismo. El conocimiento y amor propio, en esta línea, sería el primer obstáculo para una vida verdaderamente altruista. Para esta clase de personas, la vida virtuosa consistiría en reprimirse, es decir, en no poder ser sí mismo. Sin embargo, por muy opuestas que parezcan estas posturas, no son sino dos caras de una misma moneda. En efecto, ambas consideran que el conocimiento y amor de sí mismo es egoísta y casi hasta un mal. Los primeros toman esto positivamente: hay que preocuparse de uno mismo y ser un poco (o bastante) egoísta en la vida; los segundos negativamente: el hombre no puede hacer todo lo que quiere, sino que debe olvidarse de sí mismo para conocer y amar a los demás. Santo Tomás, por su parte, nunca cayó en tales errores, sino que, por el contrario, sostuvo una vía media y superadora de ambas, la cual es tanto más necesaria en nuestros días cuanto más se hace olvidadiza. Analicemos en qué consiste. Conocimiento de sí falso y amor de sí desordenado. En primer lugar, debe reconocerse que santo Tomás coincide con estas posturas en el hecho de que existe un amor de sí mismo desordenado que sigue a un conocimiento de sí mismo falso. Este amor de sí mismo desordenado es principio, raíz y causa de todos los pecados, de modo tal que "la raíz de toda iniquidad es el amor de sí mismo"1. Es también el que lleva hasta el desprecio de Dios y hace a la ciudad de Babilonia, en contraposición al amor de Dios hasta el desprecio de sí que hace a la ciudad de Jerusalén2. La primera es más bien expositiva y trata de presentar el actualmente conocido argumento cosmológico kalam a favor de la existencia de Dios del filósofo y teólogo cristiano de la Talbot School of Theology el Dr. William Lane Craig, que reformula a partir del argumento del teólogo árabe medieval Algazél quien lo adopta de Juan Filopón y luego es reasumido por el Doctor Seráfico, y con el cual ha blindado su escudo apologético frente a los llamados "nuevos ateos" (los famoso cuatro jinetes). La segunda, por el contrario, es más bien polémica e intenta confrontar al filósofo norteamericano con Santo Tomás de Aquino al cual seguimos. Se trata entonces de mostrar en qué punto estaría de acuerdo el Aquinate y en cual no. Para esto se hará alusión al problema medieval de la eternidad del mundo1, en el cual nuestro autor discute contra un doble frente: por un lado, los aristotélicos radicales o heterodoxos o averroístas latinos2, como Siger de Brabante por ejemplo; por otro, los teólogos franciscanos de corte más agustiniense, como San Buenaventura, entre otros. Anticipamos que William Lane Craig se encontraría del lado de los franciscanos. Por consiguiente, cada cosa, por el hecho de ser, es buena, atractiva, valiosa. Como dice Santo Tomás: ens et bonum convertuntur, el ente y el bien se convierten2. De este modo, porque Dios lo ama es bueno, y porque es bueno me apetece y puedo amarlo. Sin embargo, que la raíz última de todo cuanto existe sea buena no parece muy claro en un mundo en el que cotidianamente experimentamos toda clase de males. Como ya notaba Pascal3, la naturaleza es ambigua, susceptible de decir algo y su contrario. Así es que muchos filósofos-y muchas personas sencillas-, incluyendo Santo Tomás, han visto en ella, en sus riquezas y su orden, el punto de partida para ascender, por vía de causalidad, a la existencia de un Dios Todopoderoso y Bueno (argumentos cosmológicos, teleológicos, etc.). Pero otros desde ella han iniciado el camino contrario, pues el sufrimiento, el dolor, la muerte, la injusticia, las guerras, el pecado, etc., no parecerían ser fruto de una realidad previamente amada por el Creador. Ante esto, no podemos más que preguntarnos cómo, frente a la realidad del mal, es posible seguir confesando la existencia de un Dios Bueno, Sabio y Omnipotente. ¿Cómo se compagina la existencia de Dios y sus atributos con el mal que a todos los niveles de la vida se hace presente? ¿Cómo un Dios tal puede permitir los horrores que nos acusan constantemente? El Tomás que disputa ha recibido suficiente atención durante todos estos años. Recientemente, hay un mayor interés en la lectura que Tomás hace de la Palabra. Las collationes del Aquinate al Ave María, el Padre Nuestro, el Credo y el Decálogo son bien conocidas. Sin embargo, ha pasado casi inadvertido el Tomás predicador en sus “sermones académicos” (Fr. La paternidad y la filiación se predican, en primer lugar, de las personas divinas 1. Las mismas ... more La paternidad y la filiación se predican, en primer lugar, de las personas divinas 1. Las mismas personas divinas son para Santo Tomás relaciones subsistentes. Esto no es otra cosa que decir que la misma persona del Padre en la Trinidad es su relación de principio u origen respecto del Hijo al que le comunica su misma naturaleza, y que la misma persona del Hijo es su relación de principiado, originado o engendrado eternamente por el Padre2. La identidad personal del Padre y del Hijo, su personalidad, se nos escaparía totalmente si no las entendemos en su reciprocidad. El fundamento de estas relaciones de oposición reales que subsisten en Dios está en las procesiones divinas, es decir, operaciones inmanentes vitales de conocimiento y amor. En concreto, nos interesa aquella acción por la que el Padre dice o pronuncia eternamente su Verbo, el Hijo o Imagen. Santo Tomás, siguiendo la tradición agustiniana, estudia esta procesión, que es la generación, desde la noción de verbum ("In principio erat Verbum" Jn 1, 1). Dios Padre profiere una palabra interior, del corazón, que es distinta de Él mismo (aunque no algo otro distinto, al modo de una naturaleza diversa)3, pero permanece en Él. El Hijo brota en la intimidad de la Trinidad como fruto de una emanación inteligible, de un acto fecundo de dicción del Padre. En cuanto Verbo, el Hijo representa perfectamente a aquel que lo dice, es Imagen total suya, por esto es precisamente su Hijo, en la medida en que tiene su misma naturaleza (simple, perfecta, infinita, inmutable, eterna, una, omnisciente, omnipotente, etc.). Al conocerse comprehensivamente a Sí mismo, por vía del intelecto, el Padre dice o engendra a su Hijo, siendo principio de su origen y al cual le otorga toda la perfección de su naturaleza (son consubstanciales), y el Hijo expresa cabalmente lo que Dios es. Más aún, es Dios.4 Ahora bien, para comprender más profundamente a las personas divinas, así como su distinción real según las diversas relaciones opuestas de origen, el Aquinate hace uso de una analogía, es decir, de una realidad en la que se da de un modo en parte semejante y en parte, FERNÁNDEZ RUIZ
El presente trabajo busca exponer sucintamente cómo se aplica la noción analógica de reditio (ret... more El presente trabajo busca exponer sucintamente cómo se aplica la noción analógica de reditio (retorno, vuelta) a los distintos órdenes de la razón humana según el pensamiento de Tomás de Aquino. En primer lugar, se analiza en qué sentido la razón vuelve sobre sí de modo entitativo o metafísico: la razón como potencia espiritual del alma humana subsistente. En segundo lugar, de qué manera la razón retorna hacia sí operativamente hablando, es decir, entendiéndose completamente a sí misma. Este segundo sentido accidental de la reditio, se ha subdivido, desde San Agustín, en esencial y existencial. El tratamiento de cómo el hombre conoce que existe, habitual y actualmente, y qué es, según las dos primeras operaciones intelectuales, será el objetivo de la segunda parte de la ponencia. Con esto puede vislumbrarse la importancia de la vida recogida e íntima propia del homo rediens.

En el mundo de hoy podemos encontrar, respecto de este tema, dos vicios extremos. Por un lado, por exceso, vemos muchos hombres que viven de manera ensimismada, individualista, egoísta y soberbia, es decir, que valoran la realidad y a los demás únicamente por la utilidad o conveniencia propia. El conocimiento y amor de sí mismo, en este sentido, sería para ellos lo más importante, a punto tal que nada harían por los demás, sino todo para sí mismos. Para esta clase de personas, la vida virtuosa consistiría en liberarse, es decir, en ser sí mismo a costa de todo. Por otro lado, por defecto, vemos muchos hombres que viven de manera alterada, enajenada o volcada hacia afuera, es decir, que consideran que vivir para los demás desinteresadamente supone matar al sí mismo. El conocimiento y amor propio, en esta línea, sería el primer obstáculo para una vida verdaderamente altruista. Para esta clase de personas, la vida virtuosa consistiría en reprimirse, es decir, en no poder ser sí mismo. Sin embargo, por muy opuestas que parezcan estas posturas, no son sino dos caras de una misma moneda. En efecto, ambas consideran que el conocimiento y amor de sí mismo es egoísta y casi hasta un mal. Los primeros toman esto positivamente: hay que preocuparse de uno mismo y ser un poco (o bastante) egoísta en la vida; los segundos negativamente: el hombre no puede hacer todo lo que quiere, sino que debe olvidarse de sí mismo para conocer y amar a los demás. Santo Tomás, por su parte, nunca cayó en tales errores, sino que, por el contrario, sostuvo una vía media y superadora de ambas, la cual es tanto más necesaria en nuestros días cuanto más se hace olvidadiza. Analicemos en qué consiste. Conocimiento de sí falso y amor de sí desordenado. En primer lugar, debe reconocerse que santo Tomás coincide con estas posturas en el hecho de que existe un amor de sí mismo desordenado que sigue a un conocimiento de sí mismo falso. Este amor de sí mismo desordenado es principio, raíz y causa de todos los pecados, de modo tal que "la raíz de toda iniquidad es el amor de sí mismo"1. Es también el que lleva hasta el desprecio de Dios y hace a la ciudad de Babilonia, en contraposición al amor de Dios hasta el desprecio de sí que hace a la ciudad de Jerusalén2. La primera es más bien expositiva y trata de presentar el actualmente conocido argumento cosmológico kalam a favor de la existencia de Dios del filósofo y teólogo cristiano de la Talbot School of Theology el Dr. William Lane Craig, que reformula a partir del argumento del teólogo árabe medieval Algazél quien lo adopta de Juan Filopón y luego es reasumido por el Doctor Seráfico, y con el cual ha blindado su escudo apologético frente a los llamados "nuevos ateos" (los famoso cuatro jinetes). La segunda, por el contrario, es más bien polémica e intenta confrontar al filósofo norteamericano con Santo Tomás de Aquino al cual seguimos. Se trata entonces de mostrar en qué punto estaría de acuerdo el Aquinate y en cual no. Para esto se hará alusión al problema medieval de la eternidad del mundo1, en el cual nuestro autor discute contra un doble frente: por un lado, los aristotélicos radicales o heterodoxos o averroístas latinos2, como Siger de Brabante por ejemplo; por otro, los teólogos franciscanos de corte más agustiniense, como San Buenaventura, entre otros. Anticipamos que William Lane Craig se encontraría del lado de los franciscanos. El argumento cosmológico "kalam" Comenzamos, por tanto, en nuestra primera línea de la ponencia exponiendo el argumento del Dr. William Lane Craig siendo lo más fieles posibles a su pensamiento. No dejamos ninguna referencia bibliográfica, pero se puede encontrar fácilmente en "Youtube" alguno de sus debates donde defiende este razonamiento. Por consiguiente, cada cosa, por el hecho de ser, es buena, atractiva, valiosa. Como dice Santo Tomás: ens et bonum convertuntur, el ente y el bien se convierten2. De este modo, porque Dios lo ama es bueno, y porque es bueno me apetece y puedo amarlo. Sin embargo, que la raíz última de todo cuanto existe sea buena no parece muy claro en un mundo en el que cotidianamente experimentamos toda clase de males. Como ya notaba Pascal3, la naturaleza es ambigua, susceptible de decir algo y su contrario. Así es que muchos filósofos-y muchas personas sencillas-, incluyendo Santo Tomás, han visto en ella, en sus riquezas y su orden, el punto de partida para ascender, por vía de causalidad, a la existencia de un Dios Todopoderoso y Bueno (argumentos cosmológicos, teleológicos, etc.). Pero otros desde ella han iniciado el camino contrario, pues el sufrimiento, el dolor, la muerte, la injusticia, las guerras, el pecado, etc., no parecerían ser fruto de una realidad previamente amada por el Creador. Ante esto, no podemos más que preguntarnos cómo, frente a la realidad del mal, es posible seguir confesando la existencia de un Dios Bueno, Sabio y Omnipotente. ¿Cómo se compagina la existencia de Dios y sus atributos con el mal que a todos los niveles de la vida se hace presente? ¿Cómo un Dios tal puede permitir los horrores que nos acusan constantemente? De dónde, dijeron que todo se hace por hado, llamando "hado" a la ordenación que hay en las cosas por la divina providencia. Esta demostración o supone aquella otra de la existencia de Dios y discurre a priorísticamente o en un movimiento de "abajo hacia arriba", elevándose de las mismas creaturas causadas al Creador, su causa, es a posteriori. Por otra parte, esta creación, por la que Dios causa ex nihilo la totalidad del ser del efecto, es realizada por voluntad, en un acto eterno libre y de amor como cuando un artista concibe y ejecuta un artefacto, y no por necesidad, al modo del sol que ilumina necesariamente con sus rayos. Es por este motivo que el comienzo temporal del mundo o, por el contrario, su eternidad, depende de la decisión de Dios, de su querer crear un mundo con comienzo temporal o sin. De aquí se siguen por lo menos dos cosas, en primer lugar: la sola razón por su sola luz o la sola filosofía no pueden demostrar el comienzo o eternidad necesaria del mundo pero si demostrar la posibilidad de ambas; en segundo lugar: decimos la sola razón o por su propia luz porque la opción que de hecho se dio, es decir la que Dios realmente quiso elegir, es conocida una vez que la luz de la fe pase a elevar a la otra, y de este modo sabemos por Revelación y fe que Dios, desde toda la eternidad, en una decisión libérrima quiso crear un mundo con comienzo temporal. No obstante, hay quienes difieren del Aquinate. Por un lado, los averroístas sostienen que el mundo es creado necesariamente desde toda la eternidad. Para esto se valen de argumentos tanto de razón como de autoridad. Utilizan textos de Aristóteles que parecen decir que el mundo existe desde siempre. En efecto, parecería decir que necesariamente el movimiento es eterno, pues si una creatura comenzó a moverse y nada se mueve a sí mismo, entonces tuvo que ser movida por otra, pero este motor a su vez por otro y así sucesiva e infinitamente, de modo que todo movimiento que empieza supone un agente anterior y por lo tanto el tiempo, medida del movimiento, nunca comenzó. Además, lejos de negar al primer motor inmóvil, por el contrario, sostienen que si Dios es el primer motor inmóvil tiene que serlo necesariamente desde siempre, pues si en un momento el mundo no existía entonces Dios no era motor, porque no había móvil, ergo Dios es primer motor inmóvil desde toda la eternidad Fernández Ruiz 1 Lugares paralelos: II Sent. Articulus 2: Utrum eas (creaturae) incoepisse sit articulus fidei 1. Ad secundum sic proceditur. Videtur quod mundum incoepisse non sit articulus fidei, sed conclusio demonstrabilis. En su segundo profesorado en París, Santo Tomas, representando a la escuela dominicana junto con su maestro, lucha contra los franciscanos, Juan Peckham por ejemplo, y seculares en esta cuestión doctrinal: la cuestión de la creación y su referencia al tema del comienzo en el tiempo del mundo. La posición de Santo Tomas consiste en afirmar el origen temporal del mundo creado, la negación, por tanto, de su eternidad, por un lado, y, por otro, en afirmar que dicho origen en el tiempo es un artículo de fe, no un resultado de argumentos racionales. En otras palabras, niega la demostrabilidad racional de la creación del mundo en el tiempo, por no envolver contradicción la creación del mundo ab aeterno. La posición de sus adversarios, en cambio, intenta mostrarle que su doctrina es opuesta a la fe. Así sostienen que, si no es demostrable que el mundo no puede ser eterno, entonces no hay manera de probar la creación, ni la distinción entre el mundo y Dios. Ahora bien, mientras que la redacción de la Prima pars de la Summa Theologiae es de 1266-1268, el opúsculo de dogma De aeternitate mundi contra murmurantes es, precisamente, 1270. El motivo de esta última redacción nace entonces del hecho de que lo expuesto en esta cuestión lejos de acallar los ánimos acerca de utrum possit demonstrative probari quod mundus non sit aeternus, antes bien, suscita críticas con más vehemencia que antes y murmuraciones públicas contra semejante doctrina2. Más allá de la historia de la cuestión, Santo Tomas ve de todo punto necesario distinguir netamente la creación y el origen en el tiempo. Además, no encuentra inconveniente alguno, salvo para la imaginación, en que el mundo haya existido desde siempre, aunque producido y mantenido en el ser eternamente por la acción de Dios. En esta posibilidad, se seguiría respetando la creatio ex nihilo, no significando post nihilo, es decir, un orden de sucesión, si cabe hablar así, en que la creatura es después de no ser (habere esse post non esse), sino la negación de toda referencia a una causa natural de la que proceda el ser creado. En esta posibilidad, efectivamente, el ex nihilo seguiría siendo total dependencia del ser creado respecto del Creador, o la nada de la creatura si se la abandonase a ella misma. Santo Tomas, luego de tratar al alma en sí misma considerada (q.75), investiga su unión con el cuerpo (q.76 De unione animae ad corpus). Y acerca de esto se hace ocho preguntas, correspondientes a cada uno de los artículos que comprenden la cuestión. En este artículo primero se pregunta si el principio intelectivo se une al cuerpo como forma (art. 1º Utrum intellectivum principium uniatur corpori ut forma). Y en el siguiente si el principio intelectivo se multiplica numéricamente a medida que se multiplican los cuerpos, o si, por el contrario hay una inteligencia única, común a todos los hombres (art. 2º Utrum intellectivum principium numero multiplicetur secundum multiplicationem corporum; vel sit unus intelectus ómnium hominum). El Doctor Angélico desdobla en estos dos artículos su postura en contra de los Averroístas. Averroes (1126-1198) sostenía que no hay un intelecto individual o interior para cada uno de los hombres sino un único intelecto separado para todos ellos, extrínseco. Esto presenta un doble problema, tanto histórico como antropológico. Histórico porque el filósofo andalusí cree haber hecho la correcta interpretación de los textos de Aristóteles, especialmente del Libro III del De Anima, entonces hay que demostrar la postura real del Estagirita y según esto dependerá el carácter, positivo o negativo, de su recibimiento en la cultura. Antropológico porque está dando su visión acerca del hombre y hay que demostrar si está o no en verdad. Para Averroes el hombre posee alma, en cuanto principio de vida, vegetativa y sensitiva (con las correspondientes potencias o facultades, físicas, de cada una) pero no posee alma intelectiva, porque es separada de la materia, en este caso del cuerpo humano. Y como la materia es principio de individuación, hay un solo intelecto para todos los hombres. Una substancia o espíritu separado del cual todos participamos. Veamos que dice Santo Tomas acerca de esto. ST I, 76, 1: Resumiremos en cinco puntos el corpus. 1. Tesis aristotélico-tomista: El entendimiento, principio de las operaciones intelectuales, es forma del cuerpo humano (necesse est dicere quod intellectus, qui est intelectualis operationis principium, sit humani corporis forma). El principio primero o mediato (el inmediato son las potencias) de las operaciones de un sujeto es su forma substancial (uno actúa o es capaz de actuar en la medida en que está en acto, y el principio activo de las substancias hilemórficas es su forma substancial). Ahora bien, entender. Por lo tanto, el principio intelectivo, o intelecto, o alma intelectiva, es forma del cuerpo humano, es decir, el principio en virtud del cual primeramente entendemos (et haec est demonstratio Aristotelis in II "De Anima" C.2 n.12).

Siguiendo a Fr. Manuel Ubeda Purkiss OP, diremos que la terminología y problemática de este artículo, al igual que el primero, están tomadas de la controversia averroísta. Retomada de forma semejante en la cuestión 79, artículo 5, con respecto al intelecto agente. Fue quizás ésta la lucha que con más pasión emprendió el Doctor Angélico. En el De unitate intellectus se deja traslucir, como quizá en ninguna otra obra, esa serena cólera y esa pasión santa por la verdad. El Aquinate pretende ser fiel intérprete de Aristóteles y llama a Averroes su "pervertidor". Sin duda, la lógica del aristotelismo lleva a la interpretación tomista, pero el Aristóteles histórico mantiene dudas y expresiones equívocas que ocasionaron las diversas interpretaciones árabes. La demostración de Santo Tomas, que en el Contra gentes se multiplica en infinidad de argumentos, consiste, en definitiva, en una serie de reducciones ad absurdum, dado que el alma inteligente (en la hipótesis de Platón) o el hombre inteligente (en la de Aristóteles) es una substancia, un unum simpliciter1. ST I, 76, 2: Tesis principal: Un alma intelectiva, numéricamente la misma, no puede estar en seres numéricamente distintos. O, dicho en positivo, el principio intelectivo se multiplica a medida que se multiplican los cuerpos. Corpus: Partiendo de la tesis principal, aunque dicha de otro modo, Santo Tomás desarrolla deductivamente el cuerpo del artículo, a mi parecer, en 3 puntos, según el modo en que se explique la unión del intelecto con este o aquel hombre. A saber, primero, según la explica Platón; segundo, según Aristóteles; tercero, de cualquier modo posible en que se dé. Con respecto a esta última, la divide en 3, contando ambas con una hipótesis general, un ejemplo donde se da esa hipótesis, y su paralelo con el intelecto. Santo Tomas, luego de tratar las potencias del alma en general, las investiga ahora in speciali, considerando en segundo lugar a las intelectivas. Y busca, en este artículo, estudiar la distinción real del intelecto agente en cada hombre. Como vemos, "vuelve a enfrentarse con el averroísmo. La convicción de Santo Tomas no es menor aquí que tratándose del intelecto posible; pero, evidentemente, las consecuencias de la posición adversaria no serían tan funestas, y por esto estima menos absurda la afirmación de un intelecto agente separado que la de un intelecto posible para todos los hombres. La unicidad del intelecto posible, en efecto, haría indemostrable la inmortalidad personal y la beatitud. El carácter separado del intelecto agente argüiría tan solo imperfección-ciertamente gravísima y antinatural-en un ser cuyo modo connatural de entender es abstractivo; pero en absoluto no impediría, supuesto el intelecto posible en cada hombre, la inmortalidad personal ni la beatitud. La acción propia del hombre, específica y privativa de su alma espiritual, tanto en estado de unión-modo connatural-como en el de separación-modo preternatural-, es el entender, y solo el intelecto posible es formalmente intelecto, esto es, cognoscitivo. Por otra parte la beatitud sobrenatural consiste esencialmente en el conocimiento de la esencia divina, conocimiento del que hay que excluir no solo cualquier intervención del intelecto agente, sino la de toda especie creada, impresa o expresa, con la única colaboración (ex parte subiecti) del lumen gloriae, hábito sobrenatural cuyo único sujeto es el propio intelecto posible3. Por otra parte, si la interpretación averroísta del intelecto posible separado pugna con la sistemática total del aristotelismo, tal y como la ha llevado hasta sus últimas consecuencias el tomismo-aunque el Aristóteles histórico no acabara de resolver la antinomia-, por lo que se refiere al intelecto agente estás más en continuidad con el pensamiento histórico de Aristóteles. De hecho, no obstante, la teoría es de estirpe platónica y, sobre todo, plotiniana. Santo Tomas aquí más lógico que el propio Aristóteles, salva admirablemente todas las dificultades"4. Este opúsculo está dedicado, por Santo Tomás, a los "murmurantes", es decir, a algunos teólogos c... more Este opúsculo está dedicado, por Santo Tomás, a los "murmurantes", es decir, a algunos teólogos cristianos, cuya doctrina se vinculaba a San Agustín, que sostenían que el mundo, creado por Dios, necesariamente existe con un comienzo temporal. Con lo cual se trata de una resolución parcial de la cuestión de la eternidad del mundo, pues, en el extremo diametralmente opuesto, algunos otros pensadores, no católicos, sostenían, basándose en textos de Aristóteles, que el mundo, "creado" o, por lo menos, "movido" por Dios, existe necesariamente desde siempre, sin origen en el tiempo. De hecho, Santo Tomás ya dio varias veces a conocer su postura en obras anteriores y a ambas partes, pero, puesto que algunos, del bando cristiano, "murmuraban" acerca de él, diciendo que era averroísta y que defendía a los árabes, o que asimilaba doctrinas aristotélicas heterodoxas, o hasta heréticas, al cristianismo, etc., vuelve a tratar del tema enfocando su atención y sus emociones contra aquellos que pretendían probar demostrativamente, mediante razones no concluyentes, aquellas cosas que creemos y la fe nos dicta. Se puede decir, entonces, que Santo Tomás asume su postura, frente a estos teólogos cristianos, por un doble motivo: en primer lugar, por una cuestión "útil", o "apologética": pues sabe que, si alguien intenta probar, apoyado en argumentos no demostrativos, la novedad del mundo contra los filósofos que sostiene que el mundo existe ab aeterno, ellos se volverían a la risa de la fe más que a su confirmación, ya que solucionan todas las demostraciones aducidas1. Y, en segundo lugar, por una cuestión "filosófico-doctrinal"2, es decir, la que pasa por la verdad de la cuestión: donde Santo Tomás quiere mostrar que no encierra contradicción la posibilidad de que el mundo, que sabemos creado por Dios, exista desde toda la eternidad. (Explicar el proceso de conocimiento intelectual). (De spir. Creat., 9). Es necesario comprender qué se entiende con el nombre de intelecto posible e intelecto agente. Aristóteles, en el libro III Sobre el alma procedió a reflexionar sobre el intelecto a través de la semejanza del sentido. Por parte del sentido, puesto que nos hallamos a veces sintiendo en potencia, a veces en acto (hecho de experiencia), es necesario poner en nosotros una facultad sensitiva por la que sintamos en potencia. La cual está en potencia respecto de las especies de los sensibles y no tiene en acto a ninguna de ellas en su esencia. Si tuviera en acto a los sensibles se seguiría que estaríamos siempre sintiendo en acto. De manera semejante, dado que nos hallamos a veces entendiendo en acto y, otras veces, en potencia (hecho de experiencia), resulta necesario proponer alguna facultad por la que entendamos en potencia. La cual debe estar en potencia respecto de todas las naturalezas de las cosas sensibles, a las que podemos entender, y no tener en acto a ninguna de ellas en su propia esencia y naturaleza. Por esto es llamada "intelecto posible". Ahora bien, también el sentido, en tanto que está en potencia, podría llamarse "sentido posible", pero el sentido es reducido al acto por los sensibles en acto, los cuales están fuera del alma, por lo que no es necesario postular un "sentido agente". En cuanto al intelecto, no sería necesario tampoco, según Platón, afirmar un "intelecto agente", pues el intelecto en potencia se reduciría al acto por los inteligibles en acto, es decir los universales, que subsistirían fuera del alma. En cambio, según Aristóteles, y Santo Tomás suscribe, puesto que los universales no subsisten sino en las cosas sensibles, las cuales no son inteligibles en acto, es necesario poner una facultad que haga a los inteligibles en potencia ser inteligibles en acto, abstrayendo las especies de las cosas de la materia y de las condiciones individuantes. Esta facultad se llama "intelecto agente". A grandes rasgos nuestras facultades sensitivas conocen, inmaterialmente, los distintos actos y formas accidentales del objeto conocido, correspondientes a los distintos objetos de cada sentido externo e interno, sin materia pero con sus condiciones, resultando de este proceso, aunque en realidad se da de manera espontánea, un fantasma; es decir, la síntesis de la percepción sensorial es esta imagen elaborada producida por la facultad cogitativa, en el caso del hombre, en la cual se conoce al individuo o particular existente bajo una naturaleza común, se podría decir que se conoce in recto al singular e in oblicuo o concomitantemente la naturaleza común, la esencia de la cosa. Punto de partida: En efecto, se encuentra en las cosas algo más y menos bueno, y verdadero, y noble, y así de otros semejantes. Primer principio: Pero más y menos se dicen de diversos según que se aproximan de diverso modo hacia algo que es máximo, como es más cálido, lo que más se aproxima al máximo cálido. Por consiguiente, existe algo que es verísimo, y óptimo, y nobilísimo, y por consecuente máximo ente, pues las cosas que son máximamente verdaderas, son máximamente entes, cómo se dice en el segundo [libro] de los Metafísicos [de Aristóteles]. Segundo principio: Ahora bien, lo que se dice máximo tal en algún género, es causa de todos aquellos que son de aquel género, como el fuego, que es máximamente cálido, es causa de todos los cálidos, cómo se dice en el mismo libro. En efecto, en II Metaphys. muestra que aquellas cosas que son máximamente verdaderas, son también máximamente entes. Ahora bien, en IV Metaphys. muestra que existe algo máximamente verdadero, por el hecho de que vemos de dos cosas que son falsas una es más falsa que la otra, de dónde, es preciso que la otra sea también más verdadera que la otra; ahora bien, esto es según la aproximación a aquello que es absoluta y máximamente verdadero. De lo que puede concluirse que existe algo que es máximamente ente. Y a esto decimos "Dios". Super I Sent. d. 3, q. 1, pr. El segundo argumento se toma por vía de remoción, y es tal. Más allá de todo imperfecto es preciso que exista algo perfecto, que, ciertamente, no esté mezclado con ninguna imperfección. Pero el cuerpo es imperfecto, porque es (de)terminado y finito en sus dimensiones y móvil. Por lo tanto, es preciso que más allá de los cuerpos exista algo que no es cuerpo. Además, todo incorpóreo mutable respecto de su naturaleza es imperfecto. Por lo tanto, más allá de todas las especies mutables, como son las almas y los ángeles, es preciso que exista algún ente incorpóreo e inmóvil y totalmente perfecto, y esto es Dios. Otros dos argumentos se toman por vía de eminencia. Pero puede doblemente atenderse la eminencia, o bien cuanto al ser o bien cuanto al conocimiento. El Rigans Montes, en el que se expresa la misión ministerial del teólogo educador, sin duda ha recibido mayor atención que el Hic est liber, en el que se enfatiza el mensaje que el teólogo transmite: la sacra Scriptura. Ambos deben leerse conjuntamente. En esta comunicación nos concentraremos en la segunda de las lecciones inaugurales, que fue promulgada el primer día de clases (resumptio) posterior a la inceptio (Rigans montes), posiblemente el 17 de junio de 1256 (fray Tomás tenía 31 años, cuando la promoción al magisterio exigía reglamentariamente la edad de 35). Como dictaba el estatuto de la Universidad de París, el Hic est liber se estructura en dos grandes partes: una recomendación, elogio, encomio o alabanza de la Sagrada Escritura (commendatio sacrae Scripturae) y una división de los libros bíblicos (partitio sacrae Scripturae). Haremos una breve exposición de ambas partes: ¿cómo se divide y por qué es recomendable leer la Sagrada Escritura para Tomás de Aquino?
El texto también indaga en cómo las escrituras reflejan la omnipresencia y ubicuidad de Dios, analizando pasajes bíblicos clave que hablan de la inmediatez y la continuidad de la acción divina en el mundo. Además, se profundiza en la relación especial entre Dios y los seres humanos, enfocándose en la inhabitación trinitaria en los santos y cómo el amor y conocimiento mutuo entre Dios y el hombre reflejan una profunda unión espiritual.
