Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) is considered a useful method in evaluating bone status. The aim of the present study was to establish the reference data for the QUS measurements of the calcaneus in a Greek population. We measured a QUS parameter, stiffness index (SI), at the right calcaneus in 1500 women using the Achilles express Ultrasonometer (GE Lunar, Madison, WI). Participants were divided into 7 groups according to their age with a 10-yr span in each group. A progressive decline was found in the SI values after the age of 39 yr in the current study. When the SI values were compared between the age groups, high statistically significant differences were obvious, especially between 20-29 and 50- to 59-yr age groups and 60-69 and 70- to 79-yr age groups (p < 0.0005). Additionally, in the Greek normal range (GNR), the SI values of those aged 60-69 and 70-79 yr were significantly higher (81.84+/-16.14 and 77.45+/-17.65, respectively) than those in the manufacturer's normal range (MNR; 75.84+/-16.14 and 69.10+/-17.65, p < 0.005, respectively). Using the manufacturer's values, significantly fewer women were classified as normal (48% vs 67.3%), although those with T-score < or =-2.5 were more (15.7%) compared with our Greek value (1.5%), and classification of subjects into risk-of-fracture categories was significantly different (kappa: 0.459, 66.2%, p < 0.0005). Multiple regression analysis showed that weight was the most significant predictor for SI in the age groups 30-39 (beta = 0.280, p < 0.05), 40-49, 60-69, and 70-79 yr (beta = 0.185, p < 0.005; beta = 0.329, p < 0.0005; beta = 0.494, p<0.0005, respectively). Using conventional categories of risk, we report a different classification of our subjects from those proposed by the manufacturer, supporting the concept that data specific to the Greek population are necessary.

Osteoporosis is an important systemic disorder, affecting mainly Caucasian women, with a diverse and multifactorial etiology. A large variety of animal species, including rodents, rabbits, dogs, and primates, have been used as animal models in osteoporosis research. Among these, the laboratory rat is the preferred animal for most researchers. Its skeleton has been studied extensively, and although there are several limitations to its similarity to the human condition, these can be overcome through detailed knowledge of its specific traits or with certain techniques. Aseptic loosening after total hip arthroplasty is related to bone loss of the operated leg. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of aseptic loosening on volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and bone geometry in the operated leg, in postmenopausal women with a loosened cemented femoral implant using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT). We matched 12 postmenopausal women with aseptic loosening of cemented femoral implant, with 12 women without aseptic loosening (control group) according to age, BMI, and years from operation. All patients underwent pQCT of both tibias, DXA of the lumbar spine, and determination of biochemical markers of bone turnover. pQCT values in the control group as well as the nonoperated legs between groups had no significant difference. Full recovery after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is poor. We hypothesized that the coadministration of epinephrine, a beta-blocker such as atenolol, and a calcium sensitizer such as levosimendan during CPR would improve survival and postresuscitation myocardial function. Ventricular fibrillation was induced in 60 piglets, which were left untreated for 8 minutes before attempted resuscitation. Animals were randomized into 4 groups (n = 15), to receive epinephrine (group E), epinephrine + atenolol (group E + A), epinephrine + levosimendan (group E + L) and epinephrine + atenolol + levosimendan (group E + A + L) during CPR. Electrical defibrillation was attempted 2 minutes after drug administration. Five animals in group E survived for 48 hours in comparison to 8 animals in groups E + A and E + L and 12 animals in group E + A + L. Postresuscitation cardiac output was significantly better in the animals of group E + A + L. Troponin I remained significantly lower in groups E + A and E + A + L. Serum astroglial protein (S-100) and neuron-specific enolase values in group E + L and E + A + L were statistically lower than those measured in groups E and E + A during the entire observation period. The neurologic alertness score was higher in group E + A + L compared to groups E and E + A. The administration of a drug combination of epinephrine + atenolol + levosimendan, when given during CPR, in a pig model of cardiac arrest, results in improved 48-hour survival and improves postresuscitation cardiac function.

This experimental study investigates the effects of hypothyroidism on the descending thoracic aorta. Hypothyroidism was induced in 20 male Wistar rats by administering 0.05% of 6-n propyl 2-thiouracil (PTU) in their drinking water for 8 weeks. Euthyroid rats were used as controls. Animals were sacrificed and longitudinal strips of the descending aorta were subjected to various preselected levels of stress in a uniaxial tensile-testing device. Analysis of stress-strain, elastic modulus-strain curves disclosed significant differences between groups, indicative of stiffer aortas in hypothyroid animals at the upper physiologic and higher levels of pressure. Remodeling of the aortic wall of hypothyroid animals revealed significant histological changes. The thoracic aorta of hypothyroid rats compared with that of euthyroid ones became stiffer at high strains, including the upper physiologic range, loosing part of its distensibility. Hypothyroidism was also associated with diameter enlargement and substantial lengthening of the aorta.
