These finds date to the final period of the use of the tomb (MMII) and were probably placed in it during a single burial episode. The two artifacts that feature the bucranium were prestige objects. The significant differences in form, function, significance and on the rendering of the bucranium between the seal and the kantharos suggest that this pictorial motif was a symbol and a status item of
the dead owner of the two artifacts. The bucranium appears mainly in the palatial centres of the Protopalatial Crete. Moreover, twin appearances of pictorial motifs on radically different types of artifacts are almost exclusively observed in palatial contexts of the period (e.g. Malia, Petras). Therefore, it is suggested that the community of Myrsini participated in the social processes of the Protopalatial period actively and maintained contacts with both neighbouring and distant communities of the island.

The main aim is to investigate the meaning of their use and their incorporation in ‘The Palace of Minos’. An examination based upon the study of architecture and architectural drawings in archaeology, as well as the history of archaeological research, proposes that ‘The Palace of Minos’ contains a very characteristic, radical and exceptional assemblage of architectural drawings in terms of Aegean archaeology. Such special architectural drawings may derive from specific epistemological assumptions made by Evans in order to support his vision for Minoan Civilization. I will argue that Evans based his narrative for the Minoan Civilization not only upon the archaeological discourse, but also upon the archaeological image. More specifically, I will examine the way in which architectural drawings contributed to this direction.

The architecture of Prepalatial Crete is recognized for being both simple and diverse. The remain... more The architecture of Prepalatial Crete is recognized for being both simple and diverse. The remains of Prepalatial houses and settlements, often fragmentarily preserved, form a heterogeneous morphological set of architectural remains that characterize the whole island of Crete during the Prepalatial period. Today, after the failure of the proposed typological schemes, there is the belief that Prepalatial architecture followed many local architectural traditions that evolved autonomously. This is due to the significant variety in the form of the houses and settlements, the subsequent difficulty in finding standard morphological features between them, and the fragmentary nature of the available material, which often made comparisons at the level of houses and settlements difficult. It is, therefore, appropriate to move away from the typological and morphological approach, as it has not yielded results. This paper considers that the morphologically heterogeneous and fragmentary architectural remains of the Prepalatial period can be better approached from a design point of view. To date, there are no design studies on Prepalatial architecture. This is to be expected because of the simple and unconventional architecture of Prepalatial houses and settlements that were developed in an additive manner. Due to the simple and fragmentary nature of the Prepalatial remains, the analysis of the design of Prepalatial architecture in this paper is being appropriately adapted. In particular, it examines the organization of space in the houses using specific digital spatial analysis tools. The results of this analysis support a more homogeneous character of Prepalatial architecture in terms of the organization of space and finally push for a new synthesis of its evolution, according to which Prepalatial architecture was a distinct category of material culture in Minoan Crete before the emergence of the palaces.

Archaeologists explore past landscapes through many lenses, such as excavations and field surveys... more Archaeologists explore past landscapes through many lenses, such as excavations and field surveys, findings, ancient iconography, and ancient literature. The aim is to reconstruct the past landscape to understand ancient life better. Digital mapping contributes to this aim. For example, Mapping Ancient Athens (MAA) is a web platform that adds a modern dimension to archaeological exploration. It reconstitutes past communities and bridges the gap between archaeological contexts and ancient life as a powerful tool. MAA records all the published archaeological evidence of architectural remains of rescue excavations that have taken place so far in Athens. The recording unit is the plot, which is the place where the excavations have been conducted. The result is a cadaster map of Athens, which hosts a multitude of finds organized in terms of historical periods and types of use. In this way, the MAA achieves its original double objective: to reconstruct the monuments (e.g., the City Walls of Athens) and highlight the importance of urban archaeology.
However, MAA, as a mapping tool, deals with space. In archaeology, spatial data is the most critical information accompanying a find. Also, space lies at the core of the archaeological practice, influencing archaeological fieldwork and the post-excavation study (i.e., stratigraphic system, systematic surface surveys, contextual analyses). The centrality of space in archaeology is underlined even further by the recent thesis in archaeology claiming that archaeologists should study the topology of the (archaeological) time. Archaeological interpretation and thinking, in general, can be made not only by placing archaeological finds in a linear time sequence but also by studying them on their topological relationships with other finds and human beings during the time. Such an argument adds an extra (spatial) factor to the contextualization of archaeological finds and extends the workspace of an archaeologist working between the past and the present. As “topology of time” deals with the multi-temporality of place, a mapping platform like MAA, based on archaeological places (plots) with a long history, offers a virtual space compatible with such an investigation.
This paper suggests that digital mapping offers better multi-layered visualization of the available archaeological data but also creates a new (digital) space waiting to raise questions about accepted typologies, categorizations, and even interpretations of archaeological material. Thus, the study of urban archaeology goes beyond mere excavations and findings; it involves a dynamic engagement with the layers of history embedded in the landscape. By using digital platforms and embracing diverse perspectives, archaeologists can better understand the interwoven relationship between the past and the archaeological present.

The Prepalatial cemeteries are more numerous and more extensively excavated than their contemporary settlements. Therefore, the study of the burial field has largely shaped the image that we have of Prepalatial Crete and its society. Nevertheless, there are important remains of settlements and individual houses of the Prepalatial period, often fragmentarily preserved due to the later activity of the palatial periods. These constitute the only material testimonies of the spaces that hosted the activities of everyday life. However, an overall assessment of the available data is lacking. Moreover, research so far either treats Prepalatial houses as imperfect predecessors of the later palatial buildings, or it projects them as reflections of the dominant form of social organization of Prepalatial Crete. Consequently, the role of Prepalatial architecture in the social and historical evolution of the island is downplayed. The present study examines Prepalatial architecture according to the parameters of building shape and size, and the number and arrangement of rooms of each one of them. The aim is a new synthesis of the architectural data of the Prepalatial period, which allows the examination of the following questions: Did Prepalatial architecture attain distinct features in its composition? If so, how did it function? What was the contribution of architecture, in other words the domestic field, to the evolution of Prepalatial society?
