Utilizing the methodology of Thematic Analysis, we present the basic themes through which specific politics of signification of the consumerism and the multidimensional (not only fiscal) Greek crisis as closely intertwined phenomena emerge. The emergence of consumerism as a degenerative and pathogenic ethos in a central theme indicates politics of signification and problematization of consumerism as a cause, symptom and aggravating factor of the multidimensional crisis of the Greek social formation. These are mass address politics of meaning which seem to be part of the broader liberal perspective and attempt to interpret the Greek crisis through the analytical prism of consumption and, above all, consumerism.

Both liberals and socialists expressed their discontent about the orientation of western societies and the absence of new, radical ideals that would explore new horizons. This chapter suggests that the interpretation of the post-Cold War discontent must be grounded on the intellectual trajectory of the growth ideal. The pursuit of incessant economic growth should be seen as the offspring of three distinct developments, all of them involving liberals and socialists. The first development was the connection of economic growth with private consumption, the second was the rejection of the challenge of limits to growth while the third pertained to the liberal victory over socialism and the rise of growth liberalism in the 1980s. Nevertheless, the domination of growthism co-existed with the diachronic suspicion of both liberals and socialists toward the “shallowness” of consumerist culture. The utopian consensus on the necessity of eternal growth was sown with seeds of moral doubt. The utopian radicalism of growthism was not recognized or celebrated, a development that paved the way to the unanimous proclamation of the “end of ideologies” in the aftermath of the Cold War.

Written in a period of deep national pessimism, the book belongs to Modernization studies as it analyzes the uncompleted transition of the Greek state to Modernity. Greek history is described in the book as the 200 - year old conflict between two opposing cultural traditions, The «reformist» tradition is extrovert sharing pro-Western, pro-democratic, extrovert orientations while its opponent, the «underdog » culture is traditional, introvert, authoritarian and ambiguous toward the West. The study suggests that the book’s argument is constructed around the culturalization of ideology, a process that involves the relativization of the ideological components of the two cultures.

Inspired by the environmental crisis, the radicalism of the sixties and, later, the oil crises, ideologues from across the political spectrum posed with some urgency, the question of Limits, never since revisited until today. Despite its marginal place in the literature, this debate was decisive for the future course of the societies involved since it led to the unconditional domination of ‘growthism’. This study examines the reception of the debate in the early post-Junta years, taking as a case study the newspaper Kathimerini, which represented a voice against growth. Inspired by the ideas of «Liberal egalitarianism» and distancing itself from the broader Greek Right, from 1974 to 1979 Helen Vlachos’ newspaper propagated some of the most radical ideas in its long history. The positioning of anti-growthism in the broader ideological nexus of the newspaper allows us to trace its connections with ecology, anti-americanism, democracy and, finally, the idiosyncratic europeanism of Kathimerini. The result is the presentation of an unorthodox version of Liberalism, completely ignored in the literature
