According to this Byzantine text Alexander is the son of the last king of Egypt, the Pharao Nectanebo, who left his country and following Apollo's oracle visited Macedonia. Nectanebo was famous for his astronomical, astrological and magical knowledge which he used to prevent Alexander's birth for some hours until a favoured time comes. In only one manuscript (Paris. gr. 1711, 11th century) of this work there is a unique passage in which astronomical information is given regarding the positions of the Sun, the Moon, and the five planets at the time of Alexander's birth. In this paper I attempt a study of all information related to the astronomical instruments and their use as mentioned in the text as well as of the astronomical information regarding Alexander's birth.

As a commentary on selected passages of earlier alchemical texts it in fact offered an opportunity to its author to demonstrate wide rhetorical prowess, extensive learning, and significant breadth of philosophical understanding. In this article we present additional arguments in favour of Stephanus' authorship of the work; demonstrate that what was its concluding portion has been lost; indicate how two of the original lectures it contained have each been divided into two other lectures; and attempt to pin-point its exact date of composition on the basis of astronomical information it contains.

The introductory chapter focuses mainly on the modern vs Byzantine conceptions of science and to the semantic fields covered by this term, then and now, whereas the first two chapters analyse the Christianisation of pagan science and the beginnings of Byzantine science as well as its teaching during the Byzantine civilisation. Thereafter follow eleven chapters that cover the following fields: Logic, Arithmetic, Harmonic Theory, Geometry, Metrology, Optics and Mechanics, Theories of Vision, Meteorology and Physics, Astronomy, Geography, Zoology, Botany, Medicine and Pharmacology, Veterinary medicine, Science of warfare and Occult Sciences. This volume, organized by topic, with essays by distinguished scholars offers the most comprehensive and up-to-date history of byzantine science currently available. It is an important editorial venture, aimed not only at specialists, including students of the history of Byzantine science, but the wider public, to all readers interested in medieval history in general.

Here are some examples of our study. The three Apollo temples built side by side to one another and dating from the end of the 6th century B.C. to ca. 417 B.C. face generally west (A = 263 degrees) as the horizon profile is almost horizontal. Two days (11 March 13 October) in a year the Sun---Apollo has the corresponding declination and sets exactly at the point of the orientation of these temples. During the month Hieros ( = Sacred, our February---March) of the Deliac calendar and especially in its 11---13th days great festivals were held in honour of Apollo. Therefore it is very likely that the orientation of Apollo temples is related to the setting Sun in March rather than in October. A possible explanation based on a stellar orientation towards delta Orionis or generally Orion's belt is not convincing a...

Although no calendar is mentioned in the Homeric epics, there are references to years and months,... more Although no calendar is mentioned in the Homeric epics, there are references to years and months, which suggest the existence of an early lunisolar calendar. This hypothesis is further supported by the total number of the cattle of the Sun in Homer's Odyssey, which seems to be a poetic reference to the most ancient Greek calendar, namely the period of two lunar years. There are also traces of the tripartite division of the month in three decades of days used throughout the Greek world until Imperial Roman times. Literary evidence is supported by archaeological evidence: The circular disc of the Sun and the crescent of the Moon are displayed in scenes of ritual offerings on golden rings from Mycenae and Tiryns (15th cent. BC), while month-names and every year offerings to divinities are recorded on Linear B tablets from Knossos (Crete) and Pylos (Peloponnese). Linear B tablets also record a large number of chariots used by Minoans and Mycenaeans. It seems then very likely that later Helios's iconography as a warrior charioteer and his symbol as an "all-seeing eye" can be traced back to Mycenaean world. 1 Homeric and Mycenaean Calendars A research in the Homeric Epics shows that there is no reference to any calendar. In spite this, general information regarding years and months, without mention of month-names, gives evidence of some early form of a lunisolar calendar. The Homeric year seams to be a tropical (seasonal) year, as it goes wheeling around (περιτελλομμνων νιαυττν, Iliad, II, 551; XXIII 833 or περιπλομμνων νιαυττν, Odyssey, X, 467; XI, 294) and the same seasons return: "but when the year had passed in the waning of moons and the long days had come round" (Od. The reference to "the waning of moons" (μηννν φθιννντων) is an indication that the month (lunation) was measured from one new moon to the next one. This, in relation to "the wheeling around of the sea-sons" (περ δ τραπον ραι) of a whole year (λλλ τε δ νιαυττς ην), gives evidence of a tropical (seasonal) year measured by lunations. A reason for it could be the very ancient Greek custom, the sacrifices offered to gods to be held at ex-S.A. Paipetis (ed.), Science and Technology in Homeric Epics, 357-368.

Greek mythology is a fascinating topic for all who admire his gods and heroes, but there are also people who criticize his myths related to gods' erotic adventures. The question is, whether the myths mean such acts or they narrate real facts allegorically? In the first part of this book, C. Chassapis unveils partially the allegory of Greek myths and traces directions to their true explanation surprising everyone with the simplicity and logic of his arguments. He unveils human stories and achievements behind Apollo's unhappy loves or Zeus' numerous erotic adventures. Moreover, he examines the genealogies of the most famous Argonauts and shows that they constitute a chronological system that would be an argument pro the historical existence of these heroes. The second part of the book contains his poetic version of the Orphic hymns (the ancient Greek text included) written in a delightful style, with the notes of M. Papathanassiou.

In this article the orientation of some of the most significant monuments of the site are studied. Each monument has been measured by means of modern accurate geodetic and as-trogeodetic methods and instrumentation so that its plan, its main (longitudinal) axis, the profile of the perceptible horizon as seen from the monument and the astronomical azimuth of the main axis are determined. Special attention and study have been reserved to the Cave of Kynthos (Andron), as the latter was considered as an ancient observatory. This study attempts also a possible dating of the measured monuments based on their orientation and its relation to special celestial bodies. All data deduced by measurements and calculations, as well as historical information have been used for the creation of a database in Macromedia software.
