The manufacturer is also regulated by a cap-and-trade policy. We first compare two optimization models for a decentralized system, one that does and one that does not incorporate emission reduction technology, to show that the profit of each system member in the former is higher than that in the latter, while the opposite is true for carbon emissions when the technology level invested by the manufacturer is higher than a threshold. To test the performance of the decentralized model that incorporates emission reduction technology, we model a centralized system and reveal that the system profit in the decentralized model is increased and the corresponding carbon emissions generated during production can be reduced. These findings motivate us to propose a revenue and cost-sharing contract to coordinate the decentralized system. The result shows that the economic and environmental sustainability of the decentralized system can be improved. Finally, several managerial implications are derived by conducting a numerical study.
Quality Management in Reverse Logistics intends to develop, collect, examine and evaluate a numbe... more Quality Management in Reverse Logistics intends to develop, collect, examine and evaluate a number of quality management (QM) tools and techniques, which can be applied in practice in order to understand, review and improve any closed-loop supply chain process. In other words, the book aims to examine the existing relationship between various well-developed and thoroughly studied quality issues, such as QM, quality assurance, standardization of processes and statistical quality control and the emerging research area of reverse logistics. Quality Management in Reverse Logistics contains modeling and quantitative methods that could be used by practitioners and academics in the reverse logistics industry, as well as a thorough description of QM tools and techniques. The book leads the potential reader to broaden their scope of thinking and acting in the new, promising area of reverse logistics, where QM can be applied.

We develop formulas for the computation of a variety of indices, which reflect the statistical properties of the quality control mechanism of a production process, which is conducted through several one-sided, Bayesian x¯ control charts. Moreover, through our numerical study we evaluate the statistical performance of the economically designed adaptive x¯ control charts, in comparison with their static counterpart. Surprisingly, we find out that very often Bayes-nx¯ chart – with adaptive sample sizes but constant sampling intervals – performs better than the other Bayesian control charts, from a statistical point of view.

The diffusion of the aforementioned valuable knowledge will help directly service companies in Greece to benefit and upgrade their operation, while at the same time, indirectly, the whole Greek public sector will be enhanced, which actually constitutes a necessity for Greece nowadays. Design/methodology/approach – In order to realize the goal the authors have carried out an extensive research of the literature, thus managing to identify publications that concern various sectors of services, i.e. banking, education, health and social sector, hospitality, insurance, logistics, mobile telephony, public sector, small and medium sized enterprises providing services, sports and transport. Subsequently, based on the relevant literature we refer to social responsibility and how that started, and then to individual social responsibility, before finally focusing on CSR and CSR educational programs in Greece. However, the main part of this chapter arises from the survey that was conducted in November 2014 in two Departments of the University of Macedonia. Some very interesting conclusions are raised from the extensive statistical analysis of collected data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a survey regarding the education on CSR is conducted and it is an excellent first step which can lead in the enhancement of CSR awareness.

In order to detect the energy saving measures that, in addition to energy benefits, can also provide economic profits, the study examines the following measures: all kinds of insulation; upgrading of the heating system; use of thermal solar systems; upgrading of lighting; upgrading of electric appliances; upgrading of the cooling system. The economic evaluation methods used for ranking the energy saving measures are the Net Present Value, the Internal Rate of Return, the Savings to Investment Ratio and the Depreciated Payback Period. It has been found that amongst the most effective energy saving methods are the upgrading of lighting, the insulation of the roof of the building and the installation of an automatic temperature control system.
