It is based on an 18th century copy of the index of the printed and manuscript books, whose original was authored by J. Cardoso himself. The purpose of this article is to discuss the way as the manuscript part of Jorge Cardoso's library is, to a large extent, the outcome of Cardoso's effort to gather the largest possible amount of information and documents (mostly historical and hagiographic, both originals and copies) which would allow him to write a work - the "Agiologio Lusitano" - he intended to be through and well informed, the ultimate work of his genre in Portugal.

The "Agiologio" also intended to praise the "santos da Patria" so that the Portuguese would have models to follow and the "foreigners" would recognize Portugal as a "home of holy people". In spite of his incompleteness - the "Agiologio" was only partially continued in the 18th Century by António Caetano de Sousa -, this work became an indispensable reference for those studying sainthood and spiritual life in Portugal from the Ancient Lusitania until the 17th Century, as well as for the study of the religious and social life of that historical period.
