However, the implementation of renewable energy technologies in Africa often fails, or the technologies are found to be unsustainable in the longer term. Previous research determined eleven factors that should be taken into account for the selection of sustainable, renewable energy technologies in Africa. The purpose of this research was to confirm and build upon these findings by means of eight case studies that were conducted in Rwanda, Tanzania and Malawi. Various individuals from implementing agencies, as well as end users of the various technologies, were interviewed, while secondary data were gathered in the form of project reports and other documentation. The analyses of the data confirm the importance of the eleven factors that were previously identified. A final set of thirteen factors that should be used for the selection of renewable technologies are proposed.► Eight case studies of RET implementations in three African countries described. ► Investigates validity of eleven factors previously identified in a Delphi study. ► Presents thirteen factors that must be consider for RET selection in Africa.

It provides an overview of the performance of LCPs, their characteristics and importance as well as developments towards improving their success rate by creating a governing environment within which projects are setup and managed for success. Although many smaller capital projects, such as some software developments, can also be classified as global, this study focuses on large capital engineering projects. In modern times nearly all of these projects involves multiple countries as shareholders, financiers, contractors and service providers and can be safely termed as truly global. The study is nearing the final stages and this paper reveals some of the most significant literature findings obtained during the research period. The discussions start with an explanation of the definition of an LCP and progress towards an overview of the performance of LCPs, with specific reference to cost and benefit realisation.

Yet, the impact of call centres on projects has not been investigated. This paper reports on a survey with 92 respondents that assessed the impact of a call centre for a repair and maintenance programme. An empirically verified model is presented to illustrate the relationship between call centre communication and project performance. A balance of frequent informal and formal communication is shown to reduce mistrust and conflict of interest resulting from each party trying to maximise his respective economic position in the principal-agency relationship. The data confirms that a call centre improves the communication, collaboration and trust in project principal-agency relationships which, in turn, is perceived to contribute to project performance.
