We expand on these themes using an example from the Cuban immigrants to South Florida to increase the dynamism of Waldinger et al.'s (1990) model of immigrant entrepreneurship. These complexity and chaos themes are: (1) large differences in outcomes can come from small differences in initial conditions; (2) largely unpredictable, radical changes can be intermixed with and become directly dependent on incremental, predictable changes; (3) short-term predictability can accompany long-term nonpredictability; (4) seemingly random patterns can show an apparent attraction to specific configurations; and (5), mutual influence among a small number of predictors can appear to be random. An example from among the leading Cuban-born entrepreneurs illustrates three levels of generality in entrepreneurship theory. Most generally, this person's career reflects abstract conclusions about entrepreneurship in the larger community. At a second level, it illustrates the uniqueness in the pattern of entrepreneurship for one sub-group, a specific age cadre. At a third level, it illustrates the uniquenesses of an individual's personal history. Insights at these three levels of generality appear as we follow a systematic, theory-based, case-study method.

The current emphasis on economic transactions and justice elements in transgressions has led to the neglect of psychological and developmental needs of employees and organizations in managing dependence, emotional distance, mutual coping with change, and forming adult occupational identities. Managers and academics need to take psychological needs into account in understanding psychological contracts and resistance to changing work roles and relationships.

Eighteen years ago, W. Graham Astley (1985) argued that administrative science is a subjective social artifact rather than a body of objective scientific truths. With the help of contemporary works of John Searle, Alvin Goldman, and Ian Hacking, we distinguish what is correct from what is mistaken in Astley's and other similar social construction theses. In particular, we argue that just because administrative theories are socially constructed and subject to continued structuration, it does not follow that they are precluded from speaking correctly about the world of objects and events. That is, the fact that organization theory is socially constructed is compatible with its truth and objectivity.

The authors warn management and organization researchers against becoming institutionalized into an exaggerated perspective of self-doubt by giving too much credence to discussions of subjectivity and the underdetermination of theory by evidence.
