A man of strong personality, Constantine opposed the purposes and plans of Prime Minister Venizelos to bring Greece on to the side of the Entente. Very soon the tension between the two men over this issue became untenable, thus creating the basis for the so-called National Schism, one of the most traumatic milestones in modern Greek history. The article examines in depth the factors that influenced Constantine’s personality and decision-making during the First World War. The justification (and sometimes glorification) of Constantine’s stance during the Great War became a firm reference point for all pro-royalists in the decades that followed his death. However, in historical perspective, the 1914-1917 period can be considered a turning point in the history of the Greek monarchy that led to a progressive decline in the allure of the monarchy, which nevertheless managed to survive many decades of turbulence before its definitive abolition in the referendum of 1974.

First, we examine the role of the official bodies responsible for propaganda, the Ministry of Information in Great Britain and the Maison de la presse in France, and the role of the censorship imposed on the press. This censorship was practised in a different way in the two countries, French censorship being much more rigorous than British. Next, we describe the image of Greece given through the English and French press during the First World War, specifying the events which the newspapers particularly concentrated on. We also mention the kind of information concerning Greek affairs which was banned by the censors. Finally, we present the various propagandist activities of the Greek government, notably its efforts to influence English and French journalistic circles, the subsidies given to newspapers and the creation of telegraphic agencies.

The limited interest for the centenary of the First World War in Greece reflects the overall undervalued position of this event in the historiography and collective memory of the country, even if the years 1914-1918 constitute in fact one of the most complex, controversial and decisive periods in modern Greek history. Only in the years 1919-1940 one can find numerous references to the Great War, mainly (but not exclusively) focused on the painful internal strife that had plagued Greece during the conflict. The reasons why the First World War, in both its domestic and international dimensions, deserves more attention in the public and academic dialogue in Greece, are explained in detail in the text. In addition, a chapter is dedicated to possible interpretations for the insufficient appreciation of the event, which has been overshadowed by later dramatic events of Greek history

This mobilization was decreed as a precautionary measure, and ended on 22 June 1916, under pressure from the countries of the Entente. Then, when Venizelos formed his provisional government at Salonica, a mobilization decree was also published on 18 April 1917 on behalf of that movement, while during the same period Constantine and the royalist governments of Athens benefited from the enthusiastic support of the reservists, who, since the demobilization of June 1916, had been organized in leagues. This chapter examines the continuous mobilization campaigns in Greece, emphasizing particularly on the propaganda efforts of both royalists and Venizelists in order to convince each time the Greeks to respond or not to the call to arms, influencing in this way the fate of their homeland.
