This article shows a retrospective analysis of energy demand and atmospheric pollution by urban t... more This article shows a retrospective analysis of energy demand and atmospheric pollution by urban transport in Aburrá Valley, where Medellín is the main city. The study was carried out using LEAP model between 2000 and 2010, in order to generate information for defining strategies to help reduce air pollution in Aburrá Valley. The results show that despite the rapid increase of vehicles, the energy demand and CO2 emissions grew slowly, while criteria pollutant emissions decreased during the last decade. Also, the study shows that during the modeled period trucks were an important source of CO, NOX, SOX and PM2.5. Motorcycles (2-cycles) were also important contributors to VOC vehicular emissions.
En el presente articulo se describe la importancia y la aplicacion del Indice de Calidad del Aire... more En el presente articulo se describe la importancia y la aplicacion del Indice de Calidad del Aire (ICA) para el Valle de Aburra, adoptado por la Red de Monitoreo de la Calidad del Aire, la cual adelanta esfuerzos en la definicion de herramientas efectivas para la toma de decisiones con respecto a los niveles de contaminacion atmosferica generada en su area de influencia. Por esta razon se decidio adaptar la metodologia aplicada por la Agencia de Proteccion Ambiental de los Estados Unidos, la que ha desarrollado varias versiones de ICA para su aplicacion. La importancia del desarrollo y aplicacion del ICA es cuantificar los efectos que sobre la salud humana tienen los contaminantes y concentraciones generados en el devenir del crecimiento economico y social de nuestra region.
Based on an inventory of atmospheric emissions in Aburrá Valley (Antioquia, Colombia) completed i... more Based on an inventory of atmospheric emissions in Aburrá Valley (Antioquia, Colombia) completed in 2015, this study presents an estimate of Black Carbon (BC) emissions in this region and the dispersion of this pollutant for November 9, 2016, as well as an evaluation of the CAMx and BRAMS models in the area under study. The estimated total emissions of BC were 850 tons, 97 % of which were due to the transport sector. In the latter, trucks, followed by dump trucks, were the largest emitters of this pollutant, contributing 43 % and 37 %, respectively. Diesel fuel was the main cause of BC emissions, with 95% of the total emissions. The maximum concentration of BC estimated for November 9, 2016, was 8.47 g/m3 at 7:00 hours, and the area of greater impact was located downtown Medellín and north of the city. En el siguiente articulo se presenta el programa de Proteccion y Control de la Calidad del aire d... more En el siguiente articulo se presenta el programa de Proteccion y Control de la Calidad del aire del Area Metropolitana delValle de Aburra, disenado inicialmente en 1998 por las universidades de Antioquia, Pontifica Bolivariana y el Politecnico Jaime Isaza Cadavid y posteriormente desarrollado y ajustado por el Area Metropolitana del Valle de Aburra. Dicho Programa ha sido la base del adelanto de diversas investigaciones y trabajos de consultoria por parte de la entidad, entre las que se encuentran el monitoreo de la calidad del aire, para la cual se ilustra un resumen de su diseno, funcionamiento actual, descripcion de las estaciones, los resultados obtenidos desde 1993 y los proyectos desarrollados con el fin de obtener herramientas para la toma de decisiones y la elaboracion de programas de reduccion y planes de descontaminacion atmosferica con el fin de mejorar la calidad de vida de los habitantes de la region.
