This book contains the proceedings from the Fourth International Birgitta Conference, held in August 2021 in Stockholm and Vadstena. The theme for the conference, Birgittine Circles, focuses on Birgittine networks and the importance of individuals, places, and objects associated with the Birgittine Order. The concept of circles also applies to ideas, physical objects, travels, and exchange between different orders. The ten contributions collected in the present volume range from Birg itta's influence on late medieval culture in England, the spread of the Birgittine Order around the Baltic Sea and its importance in places as widely separated as Norrland and Spain, predecessors and successors such as Margery Kempe, and Birgittine spirituality linked to objects and texts.

A group of prayer books in the written material from the late mediaeval Vadstena Abbey that still survives once contained pictorial programmes which have now been more or less lost or destroyed. Some of the manuscripts still contain miniatures, painted or pasted in at their original places on the parchment pages, but many images have disappeared. In many cases traces of frames or other indications on the pages reveal where the lost images were once placed. The miniatures that have been preserved show a very close connection to the adjacent rubrics. The discernable distribution of the images together with a close reading of the texts makes tentative reconstruction of the lost pictorial programmes of these prayer books possible.-The analysis shows that seven of the twelve prayer books studied originally contained only a few images. The pictorial programmes of the other five manuscripts had between nine and twenty images. The iconography of these Birgittine prayer books do not emphasis...

This study investigates the pictorial world of the medieval Vadstena Abbey church. The interior of the church was filled with altars and images that had the three separated groups of viewers in mind: the 60 nuns, the 25 conventual brothers and the numerous pilgrims coming to visit the shrine of Saint Birgitta. The pilgrims faced a pictorial message where the role of saint Birgitta was emphasized, but still one among all the other saints. The images directed to the nuns and the brothers accentuated the role of the Virgin Mary as the exemplarily follower of Christ. Furthermore, all the church interior was furnished to enhance the position of the nuns, i.e. that this monastic foundation was made primarily for women.

Worship space acoustics have been established as an important part of a nation’s cultural heritage and area of acoustic research, but more research is needed regarding the region of northern Europe. This paper describes the historical acoustics of an important abbey church in Sweden in the 1470s. A digital historical reconstruction is developed. Liturgical material specific to this location is recorded and auralized within the digital reconstruction, and a room acoustic analysis is performed. The analysis is guided by liturgical practices in the church and the monastic order connected to it. It is found that the historical sound field in the church is characterized by the existence of two distinct acoustical subspaces within it, each corresponding to a location dedicated to the daily services of the monastical congregations. The subspaces show significantly better acoustic conditions for liturgical activities compared to the nave, which is very reverberant under the conditions of da...

The Birgittines and their images present result from several research projects about the late medieval monastery in Vadstena by the art historian Eva Lindqvist Sandgren. The presented material is based on a study of the nuns' bookmaking, a study of the abbey's textiles, and a further study that examines the different spheres of view that different church visitors could take part in (or were excluded from) by dividing the church room into three clearly separated spatial units: the nuns' raised and fenced choir, the monks' choirs, and the lay people's fenced-in area in the middle of the large church room. The author uses a material that ranges from the church's limestone walls down to the stitch level in the embroideries.
