In some cases, the pontifical censorship collaborates with publishers and authors to correct some historical texts previously placed on the Index. Analyzing these cases, the paper highlights how the corrective intervention of the censors is a full-fledged act of historical rewriting. If, in fact, the writing of history (historiography) is essentially its interpretation, by modifying the interpretation of the authors, the censors, in some way, rise to new authors of the historiographical works on which they intervene, rewriting the history according to their own point of view – which is that of the institution to which they belong, the Church. This operation constitutes a privileged point of view for exploring the culture and mentality of the censors – and of a considerable part of the Catholic world they represent –, marked by an apocalyptic vision of history (as a set of human events or res gestae) and by a consideration of history (as a discipline that studies, recounts and interprets such events or historia rerum gestarum) as a theological-apologetic tool placed at the service of the triumph of the Church over its adversaries.

From such an investigation, the essentially intransigent orientation of Leonine cultural politics emerges, tempered however, in some significant cases, by the political prudence of a pontiff, who endeavors to safeguard the diplomatic balance and the international position of the Church.

The second part goes into the details of the concrete activity of the pontifical censorship, exploring, on the one hand, the main thematic lines of it and pointing out, on the other hand, the limits sometimes placed on the control of the press by the delicate diplomatic balances of the Restoration.

During the nineteenth century, too, many historical books were sifted through by the two Roman institutions. These acts of censorship offer themselves as a very favourable perspective to observe the Church’s attitude towards the historical science, along that century that has loved to picture itself as the “Century of history”. Indeed, the examination of these documents allows not only to unearth the specific motivations that led to the prohibition (or the absolution) of a historical work, but also, more generally, to investigate the vision (or the visions) of history within that sort of representative sample of the Catholic official thought, which is the universe of the Pontifical censorship. This essay aims to present the methodological approach and the first outcomes of an extensive research on the censorship of the historical works in the 19th century, conducted in the ACDF. While illustrating the typology of works and the main historical issues under the attentions of the Index, it will focus especially on the hermeneutical criteria of the censors, as they emerge from the reports on the historical works submitted to their evaluation.

Such features are particularly reflected in his relationship with Christianity. Keeping a careful look at the historiographical debate of recent decades, this essay focuses on the religious mind-set of Constantine, taking as main source the letter sent by him to the bishop Alexander of Alexandria and to the presbyter Arius in an attempt to fix the dispute about the divinity of Christ, flared up in the eastern part of the Empire, around the year 320. The analysis of this and other constantinian documents shows how much the attitude of the first Christian Emperor towards religion is still permeated with elements belonging to the Roman tradition. Some of these traits are then examined in-depth against the backdrop of Roman religion, in order to highlight Constantine’s continuity and discontinuity as compared to it. Thus, Constantine sums up in himself both “the old” and “the new”, emerging as the living symbol of that momentous transition between the autumn of Romanity and the spring of (a new) Christianity.
