There are certainly well-known saints who often feature as the patrons of major cities or significant sites, but throughout the remote countryside and mountainsides, many examples of local, or "home-grown" holiness can be found. In an increasingly globalized culture, it might be thought that devotion to such isolated figures would diminish, a situation exacerbated by the unification of Italy into one nation from what were previously individual and often opposed kingdoms. As the nation forms and comes together, why should anyone retain an interest in a figure of such limited influence outside of a few select villages? Yet, it is perhaps precisely on account of the local origins of such saints that fidelity to the cult of these figures remains firm. One such figure is the abbot Saint Lidano, the Benedictine founder and abbot of the now-defunct monastery of Saint Cecilia near Sezze in the province of Latina (region of Lazio), Italy. 2 With the upcoming millenary anniversary of his birth (to be celebrated in 2026), his cult still warrants devotion and study, with a dozen articles, books, and other publications in the past twenty years. 3 Although unheard of elsewhere, the name "Lidano"
