Jorge Rodríguez Beruff. Ex Director del Bachillerato Interdisciplinario de la Universidad Carlos Albizu. Ex Decano de la Facultad de Estudios Generales de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Profesor en el Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y el Caribe y el doctorado de Historia de la Pontificia Universidad Madre y Maestra de la Republica Dominicana. Ex presidente fundador de la Asociación Puertorriqueña de Relaciones Internacionales (APRI), miembro de la Junta de Directores de la Fundación Luis Muñoz Marín, director y miembro de número de la Academia Puertorriqueña de la Historia. Posee un Doctorado en Ciencias Políticas de la Universidad de York, Inglaterra (1979). Sus libros más recientes son Puerto Rico en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Baluarte del Caribe (San Juan, 2013), Puerto Rico en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el escenario regional (San Juan, 2015) y Island at War: Puerto Rico in the Crucible of the Second World War (Mississippi, 2015), todos coeditados con José L. Bolívar. También ha publicado Entre Islas: Un homenaje puertorriqueño a Juan Bosch (San Juan, 2013) con Juan B. Giusti de Jesús, Alma Mater, memorias y perspectivas de la universidad posible (San Juan, 2013) y Aula Magna (2016) coeditados con Francisco Javier Rodríguez Suárez. Su libro de ensayos más reciente es Las caras del poder (San Juan; 2017). Ha sido profesor invitado en la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, la Universidad de Rutgers-New Brunswick, la Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra, y FLACSO, República Dominicana. Investiga actualmente sobre redes intelectuales en la educación superior.

Hay preguntas cuyo valor está en su formulación misma, y cuya contestación está abocada a quedar en suspenso: ¿Por dónde empezar a hablar de la Universidad? Esa pregunta por el origen es formulada por los editores de este tomo, Francisco Javier Rodríguez Suárez y Jorge Rodríguez Beruff, en su introducción. Esta pregunta desemboca en otra de igual magnitud: ¿Hacia dónde debe ir la Universidad? Este libro carea estas dos cuestiones, y ciertamente pone límites a una enorme discusión: origen y fin son los límites por excelencia y, en este caso, presuponen que, para hablar de la Universidad, debemos concentrarnos en debatir su razón de ser y su pertinencia última.
Dar forma a la Universidad es el aliento fundamental de este tomo que es a la vez acopio histórico de textos pertinentes que no fueron escritos deliberadamente para él, y otros realizados gracias a la generosa invitación de los editores. Que no se nos escape que se trata de un arquitecto —dedicado a la sincronía de las estructuras— y de un historiador —dedicado a las diacronías del desarrollo. Estructura y relato han, pues, determinado la selección y el orden de las entradas en este volumen complejo y diverso, rico y retante, que admite, a la vez, pensamientos compartidos por la comunidad universitaria y la incoherencia necesaria para revelar las insofocables estridencias que siempre y necesariamente han caracterizado a nuestra institución.
Por eso, las preguntas sobre el origen de la discusión y por el fin último de nuestra institución no han evitado el desbordamiento necesario de ideas, propuestas, críticas y desahogos que este tomo atesora. En el pasado ha habido otros intentos de sondear las cuestiones que surgen aquí, pero no han partido de la generosa inclusividad que refleja, de forma cabal, el presente acopio de los acuerdos y desacuerdos que nos mantienen en alta, y extremadamente fructífera, tensión.
Esa tensión es nuestra vida: habitamos el jardín de los saberes mientras vadeamos la corriente incierta de conocimientos que nunca cuajarán en forma final. Ese es el riesgo de la Universidad. Y también es su mayor don, como lo revela el conjunto de miradas que aquí se ciernen sobre el pasado, el presente y el futuro de nuestra Alma Mater.

De manera que el libro está basado en dos investigaciones: una es una observación minuciosa sobre el terreno y documentación gráfica que está en los capítulos V y VI sobre el patrimonio existente sobre el terreno de “los remanentes de la siembra y procesamiento de la caña de azúcar en el sur” (V) y las edificaciones y lugares más importantes para una “ruta de la caña de azúcar en Santa Isabel” (VI). La otra es la que llevó a cabo a través de fuentes secundarias, documentos, obras de arte, visitas y, sobre todo entrevistas a informantes de diversas clases sociales, para presentarnos una descripción integral del mundo de la caña en sus diversas manifestaciones tecnológicas, económicas, comerciales, sociales y culturales. Esta parte es interesantísima, sumamente original y nos provee una visión de conjunto sobre un largo periodo de la historia de estos pueblos del sur de Puerto Rico. Cuando uno lee estos capítulos comprende la importancia de esta industria en la constitución y la experiencia colectiva del pueblo puertorriqueño, así como las vinculaciones transatlánticas de la historia de Puerto Rico.
