This paper describes the linguistic analysis of a corpus of patient narratives that was used to d... more This paper describes the linguistic analysis of a corpus of patient narratives that was used to develop and test software to carry out sentiment analysis on the aforementioned corpus. There is a growing body of research on the relationship between sentiment analysis, social media (for example, Twitter) and health care, but less research on sentiment analysis of patient narratives (being longer and more complex texts). The motivation for this research is that patient narratives of experiences of the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK provide rich data of the treatment received.The corpus threw up some unexpected results that may be of benefit for researchers of sentiment analysis. The linguistic problems encountered have been divided into three sections: the noisy nature of large corpora; the idiomatic nature of language; the nature of language in the clinical domain. There is a growing body of research on the relationship between sentiment analysis, social media (for example, Twitter) and health care, but less research on sentiment analysis of patient narratives (being longer and more complex texts). Diversity-based designing, or the goal of ensuring that web-based information is accessible to as... more Diversity-based designing, or the goal of ensuring that web-based information is accessible to as many diverse
users as possible, has received growing international acceptance in recent years, with many countries introducing
legislation to enforce it. This paper analyses web content accessibility levels in Spanish education portals
according to the international guidelines established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the Web
Accessibility Initiative (WAI). Additionally, it suggests the calculation of an inaccessibility rate as a tool for
measuring the degree of non-compliance with WAI Guidelines 2.0 as well as illustrating the significant gap that
separates people with disabilities from digital education environments (with a 7.77% average). A total of
twenty-one educational web portals with two different web depth levels (42 sampling units) were assessed for
this purpose using the automated analysis tool Web Accessibility Test 2.0 (TAW, for its initials in Spanish). The
present study reveals a general trend towards non-compliance with the technical accessibility recommendations
issued by the W3C-WAI group (97.62% of the websites examined present mistakes in Level A conformance).
Furthermore, despite the increasingly high number of legal and regulatory measures about accessibility, their
practical application still remains unsatisfactory. A greater level of involvement must be assumed in order to
raise awareness and enhance training efforts towards accessibility in the context of collective Information and
Communication Technologies (ICTs), since this represents not only a necessity but also an ethical, social,
political and legal commitment to be assumed by society.

Internet para las personas con discapacidad. Comienza con una introducción a las
iniciativas más relevantes existentes hasta la fecha para mejorar la accesibilidad a la
Red. A continuación se presentan con más detalle las distintas áreas que influyen en la
accesibilidad a la red de las personas con discapacidad: accesibilidad al ordenador,
accesibilidad del navegador y diseño de páginas web accesibles. Por último, se presenta
un inventario de diferentes soluciones.

lenguas que se det... more El libro se divide en un bloque orientado a la metodología en la enseñanza de
lenguas que se detiene es aspectos tan variados como las tecnologías y las herramientas relativas a ella, los enfoques desde la gamificación, la comunicación y la interculturalidad, las condiciones del aprendizaje, etc. Un segundo bloque se
destina a la evaluación, sus tipos, las pautas para la elaboración de pruebas y las
percepciones a las que pueden dar lugar. Este aspecto, a pesar de su actualidad,
se ve todavía muy necesitado de análisis desde la experiencia y los datos reales.
El CD que acompaña al libro, y lo incluye, quiere constituir en sí mismo, más allá de
un mero complemento, una utilidad potente. En primer lugar, consta de una aplicación,
eRaro, de creación propia en la que se ha categorizado un corpus de más de 4.000 errores a partir de 231 expresiones escritas de diversos niveles (A1-C2 del MCER) en las siguientes lenguas: alemán, español, inglés, portugués y valenciano.
A partir del análisis de estos, se ha realizado una tarea de contextualización, determinación de su vitalidad y propuesta metodológica de afrontamiento.
El CD incorpora también un amplio número de recursos disponibles en la red
para enseñar y aprender árabe, alemán, español, francés, inglés, italiano, portugués,
ruso, valenciano y, además, un documento con enlaces generales no referidos a un idioma en concreto.
Una tercera sección, proporciona materiales para la práctica y evaluación de la
expresión oral en el nivel A2 MCER (representativo hasta ahora en las pruebas
homologadas en secundaria y FP y nivel más bajo certificable desde las EOI)
con modelos de monólogos, diálogos y conversaciones (tres participantes) que
reproducen los mismos contenidos en cada una de las lenguas mencionadas en
el apartado anterior.

WhatsApp is a software application that allows the exchange of text messages, videos, audios, ima... more WhatsApp is a software application that allows the exchange of text messages, videos, audios, images and photo between mobile phone users. The multi-modality function of WhatsApp represents an interesting mode of casual conversation that can be examined simultaneously from a sociological and linguistic point of view. This study is a discourse and lexical analysis of WhatsApp conversations from two distinct sociological groups. Aspects of discourse that can be studied with sociolinguistic corpora like ours are discourse units and phenomena such as turns and turn taking, speech acts, and interactions. Lexical aspects such as pinpointing which are the most frequently used lexical words among the users, whether these words contain more positive or negative evaluation, how they relate to and realize chat topic, the use of orthotypographical elements and conventions.
The conversations were collected from the two researchers’ phones, exporting chat histories via e-mail and saving the chat histories in an Excel spreadsheet. The chat history is anonymized and statistically evaluated, and the anonymized chat and the statistics are stored in a separate Excel sheet. When we say that the chat history is statistically evaluated, we mean that initial data about the chat history is analysed and collected. For the whole chat conversation, we count the number of members in the chat group, the number of sent messages, and the number of sent media files like photos or videos. Furthermore, every post is analysed with respect to its length; the number of characters in the shortest and in the longest text messages are counted and the corresponding users are identified who are most and least loquacious (each line of a chat history represents a message of a user). The language of the text messages is then analysed separately using various applications and software tools.
A sociological focus through the analysis of user profiles and the analysis of semantic and thematic content alongside a linguistic analysis of conversational text was carried out. Furthermore, the study explores how a technological environment such as the WhatsApp application impacts on the linguistic structure and sequence of message exchanges in casual conversation. The impact of given contexts is revealed and realised linguistically in messages, in speaker’s meaning and intention. The power of emoji and smileys which are the digital version of body language in reducing ambiguity and adding emotional context to what is said is analysed in our corpus. Comments are also made about how images, photos, text and video interact to create meaning in this multimodal form of global communication.
Initial findings from our chat corpus confirm that age, being the group’s manager, and group’s subject or topic play an important role in the participation level. Interaction tends to be structured and formulaic in the forms of address, opening and closing formulae (lots of repetition of lexical chains). Greetings are preferred over deferential forms of address that could indicate a way of showing solidarity between interactants. Findings obtained show that people use conventionally indirect strategies and a great deal of syntactic modification.

The conversations were collected from the two researchers’ phones, exporting chat histories via e-mail and saving the chat histories in an Excel spreadsheet. The chat history is anonymized and statistically evaluated, and the anonymized chat and the statistics are stored in a separate Excel sheet. When we say that the chat history is statistically evaluated, we mean that initial data about the chat history is analysed and collected. For the whole chat conversation, we count the number of members in the chat group, the number of sent messages, and the number of sent media files like photos or videos. Furthermore, every post is analysed with respect to its length; the number of characters in the shortest and in the longest text messages are counted and the corresponding users are identified who are most and least loquacious (each line of a chat history represents a message of a user). The language of the text messages is then analysed separately using various applications and software tools.
A sociological focus through the analysis of user profiles and the analysis of semantic and thematic content alongside a linguistic analysis of conversational text was carried out. Furthermore, the study explores how a technological environment such as the WhatsApp application impacts on the linguistic structure and sequence of message exchanges in casual conversation. The impact of given contexts is revealed and realised linguistically in messages, in speaker’s meaning and intention. The power of emoji and smileys which are the digital version of body language in reducing ambiguity and adding emotional context to what is said is analysed in our corpus. Comments are also made about how images, photos, text and video interact to create meaning in this multimodal form of global communication.
Initial findings from our chat corpus confirm that age, being the group’s manager, and group’s subject or topic play an important role in the participation level. Interaction tends to be structured and formulaic in the forms of address, opening and closing formulae (lots of repetition of lexical chains). Greetings are preferred over deferential forms of address that could indicate a way of showing solidarity between interactants. Findings obtained show that people use conventionally indirect strategies and a great deal of syntactic modification.
