ABSTRACT With the development of the market globalisation trend and increasing customer orientati... more ABSTRACT With the development of the market globalisation trend and increasing customer orientation, many uncertainties have entered into the manufacturing context. To create an agile response to the emergence of and change in conditions, this article presents a dynamic shop floor re-scheduling approach inspired by a neuroendocrine regulation mechanism. The dynamic re-scheduling function is the result of cooperation among several autonomous bio-inspired manufacturing cells with computing power and optimisation capabilities. The dynamic re-scheduling model is designed based on hormone regulation principles to agilely respond to the frequent occurrence of unexpected disturbances at the shop floor level. The cooperation mechanisms of the dynamic re-scheduling model are described in detail, and a test bed is set up to simulate and verify the dynamic re-scheduling approach. The results verify that the proposed method is able to improve the performances and enhance the stability of a manufacturing system.

In the specific field of manufacturing scheduling many studies have been published trying to cope with the complexity of the manufacturing environment. One of the most utilized approaches is (multi) agent-based scheduling. Nevertheless, despite the large list of studies reported in this field, there is no resource or scientific study on the performance measure of this type of approach under very common and critical execution situations. This paper focuses on multi-agent systems (MAS) based algorithms for task allocation, particularly in manufacturing applications. The goal is to provide a mechanism to measure the performance of agent-based scheduling approaches for manufacturing systems under key critical situations such as: dynamic environment, rescheduling, and priority change. With this mechanism it will be possible to simulate critical situations and to stress the system in order to measure the performance of a given agent-based scheduling method. The proposed mechanism is a pioneering approach for performance evaluation of bidding-based MAS approaches for manufacturing scheduling. The proposed method and evaluation methodology can be used to run tests in different manufacturing floors since it is independent of the workshop configuration. Moreover, the evaluation results presented in this paper show the key factors and scenarios that most affect the market-like MAS approaches for manufacturing scheduling.

Since the 19th century, many theories have been applied to the study of international migration phenomena. These theories cover sociological, economical, and cultural aspects. All the theories aim at estimating the magnitude of population movements. Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) are presented as a new methodological approach to model and foresee the process of migration. This article discusses how legal aspects can also be treated from a computational point of view. When a migrant reaches the border checkpoint, he/she must deal with the legislation of the destination country, which is applied by the border security police. This interaction at the microlevel between the migrant and the border agent is based on the definition of a behavioral model that includes the migrant's profile, the border officer's profile, and the legislation that rules the border crossing. With this model, the effects at the macrolevel of new policies (which are usually difficult to predict) can be estimated. Changes in legislation or in strictness in applying the existing law at certain borders can influence migration trends; for example, the choice of route. This study presents the main features of the computational model that has been developed to recreate the border-crossing scenario in a Multi-Agent System.
