Ce numéro présente les cas particuliers de trois églises représentatives de ce qui se trame prése... more Ce numéro présente les cas particuliers de trois églises représentatives de ce qui se trame présentement concernant le patrimoine religieux bâti du Québec. L’église St-Jean-Baptiste, située dans la ville de Québec, classée monument patrimonial, est fermée au culte depuis 2015 et n’a fait, en date de l’automne 2021, l’objet d’aucun véritable projet de requalification. L’église St-Cœur-de-Marie, située à Québec, classée monument patrimonial, fermée au culte depuis 1997, a finalement été démolie en 2021 par un promoteur immobilier. L’église St-Gabriel, située dans la MRC de Bellechasse (25 km à l’est de Québec), a été requalifiée à la fois en mode communautaire et en mode cultuel. Afin de saisir au mieux possible le destin du patrimoine religieux bâti du Québec, nous avons demandé à différents intervenants de nous entretenir de la place qu’occupait et occupe peut-être encore aujourd’hui la présence de ces églises qui ont structuré la vie de tout un peuple pendant plus de 350 ans, et en quoi leur disparation est aussi perte de mémoire et de dissolution de l’ensemble des repères visuels liés à la foi catholique.
D’une part, l’historien Marc Grignon fait référence au rôle de l’église dans les romans de Gabrielle Roy et montre comment celle-ci structurait la vie sociale et la vie individuelle, c’est-à-dire que l’église établissait un territoire visuel qui se positionnait par rapport à l’espace territorial global sous forme de filtres superposés spécifiques et généraux, inclusifs et exclusifs. En d’autres termes, dans les romans de Gabrielle Roy, le territoire visuel que constituait l’église était socialement identifiable et décodable par ceux qui habitaient un quartier spécifique. Cet article de Marc Grignon permet d’amorcer par la suite une réflexion sur la mobilisation citoyenne où des gens particulièrement impliqués dans leur communauté (Dominique Drolet, Louis-René Dumoulin, Rémi Tremblay) ou par leurs publications dans les médias, signalent et informent sur le destin du patrimoine religieux du Québec.
Pour sa part, comme le constatera le lecteur, l’historien Luc Noppen, spécialiste du patrimoine religieux, insiste non seulement sur la démolition de l’église St-Cœur-de-Marie de Québec, mais parvient aussi à montrer comment les repères visuels liés à l’église ne veulent plus rien dire pour certaines personnes ou instances gouvernementales ; une église classée bâtiment patrimonial ne garantit en rien sa pérennité.
Si les articles proposés par des citoyens mobilisés par la requalification de leur église démontrent le malaise qu’implique la disparition d’une église, celui de l’architecte Véronique Lemieux montre comment il est possible de conserver la dimension communautaire d’une église tout en évacuant l’ensemble de ses repères visuels liés au culte catholique. Dans un cas comme dans l’autre, qu’il s’agisse d’une démolition ou d’une requalification sans dimension cultuelle, c’est un ensemble de repères visuels qui ont forgé toute une société pendant plus de 350 ans qui disparaissent.
Le sociologue Pierre Fraser, quant à lui, à travers un article sur la dissolution des repères visuels liés à la foi catholique, et un autre recensant trois court-métrages traitant du destin des églises, propose une analyse du phénomène de disparition des églises au Québec. Il revient tout d’abord sur le processus d’une fermeture d’église à travers les différents intervenants impliqués dans ce type de dossier, et explore, par la suite, à la fois les problèmes soulevés par la disparition des églises et les différentes solutions proposées. Il présente finalement un projet de requalification réussi d’une église dans la MRC de Bellechasse au Québec.
