The issue Other Possible Worlds (... more Introduction to special «Between» issue Other possible worlds. The issue Other Possible Worlds (Theory, Narration, Thought) aims to investigate fiction and its frontiers, objects of critical and theoretical attention, starting from the central position they occupy in the conceptual, aesthetic, and methodological debate – for the 20th Century as well as at the beginning of the 21st. The boundaries between fiction and non-fiction disclose connections with the invention of possible worlds in literary and artistic texts in general: utopias, eutopias, dystopias, and anti-utopias, whose peculiar strategies make them identifiable in representations and writings. The sheer number of studies and investigations focused on the relationship between fact and fiction in the last decades calls for a multidisciplinary dialogue to deepen the different meanings, messages, and aesthetic forms developed, especially in the literary field.

The reflection is illustrated by narrowing the field to the translation for the theatre, and in particular focuses on a work by Wedekind considered of primary importance: Frühlingserwachen (Spring Awakening), which has seen manifold translations. After a section which gives an account of the main theoretical lines concerning transla- tion for the theater and of theater texts (Bassnet, Fischer-Lichte, Glynn, Menin, Ubersfeld), the question of the relationship between translation and hermeneutics in a descriptive and not a prescriptive sense is explored, insisting on the possibili ty to translate Vieldeutigkeit and polyphony of literary texts and on the necessary “de-centralization” (Meschonnic). The essay also presents a very brief history of Wedekind's initial reception in Italy, with the stylistic and analytical considerations of Mazzucchetti, Edschmid and Kerr, useful for the following critique of some si- gnificant examples of intertextuality in the versions by Prampolini, Filippini, Pocar, Bertocchini and Lunari. Complex textual and philological issues are outlined: The translation of the satirical level with re- spect to the criticism of the Bildungsphilister, the references to Nietzsche's reflections on suicide and those to Goethe’s Faust. A hermeneutically adequate translation emerges as a translation that aims to return the source text as openly as possible to interpretation, so that it can (re)place itself within the target hermeneutic-literary system.

There are two crucial points of the analysis that represent two foci of an ellipse: the recognition of (meta)narrative fictionality as an evocation of liminality in Sophocles’ text, which can be recognized as a narrative isotopy and a confirmation of the correctness of the critical approach - also linked to the aesthetic response to the texts - therefore allowing and encouraging the return (also) to “ordinary” reading practices, and the political-philosophical thought linked to the concepts of "open practice"; and "co-presence"; derived from Aldo Capitini, which allows a dialogic conception of critical philosophy and literary critique and a non polarizing attitude towards canon formation. A short reading of Lou Salomé’s Menschenkinder serves as example of the present-day strength of Antigone’s figure as “living symbol”.

The issue Other Possible Worlds (Theory, Narration, Thought) aims to
investigate fiction and its frontiers, objects of critical and theoretical attention,
starting from the central position they occupy in the conceptual, aesthetic, and
methodological debate – for the 20th Century as well as at the beginning of
the 21st. The boundaries between fiction and non-fiction disclose connections
with the invention of possible worlds in literary and artistic texts in general:
utopias, eutopias, dystopias, and anti-utopias, whose peculiar strategies
make them identifiable in representations and writings. The sheer number
of studies and investigations focused on the relationship between fact and
fiction in the last decades calls for a multidisciplinary dialogue to deepen the
different meanings, messages, and aesthetic forms developed, especially in
the literary field.
