industrial alem... more En este artículo se van a analizar las complejidades de la maquinaria económica e industrial alemana durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Dejando a un lado los viejos mitos acerca de la eficacia y eficiencia alemanas, se analizará en este trabajo la estructura de la economía alemana antes y durante el conflicto, haciendo especial referencia en los instrumentos organizativos y de control. Los efectos de la estructura económica tuvieron amplia repercusión de la elaboración de los planes estratégicos después de 1933, y fueron especialmente responsables de la derrota de Alemania como consecuencia directa del solapamiento de diversas estructuras económicas e industriales que acabaron mermando tanto la eficiencia como le eficacia del complejo industrial alemán. Igualmente, fueron un factor decisivo a la hora de elaborar planes estratégicos de tipo militar.

El sistema defensivo español tuvo profundas reformas militares que afectaron al rol de las tropas en América y forzó a las autoridades de Madrid a desplazar un número cada vez mayor de unidades de la península para reforzar las defensas. Se argumenta que estas unidades fueron esenciales en el éxito de la presencia militar española a finales de siglo

Indi... more Este artículo analiza los distintos factores que intervinieron en la defensa de Cartagena de Indias en 1741 y que tuvieron como característica común la escasez y limitación de medios. Se estudian los elementos navales, fortificaciones, suministros y decisiones estratégicas que tuvieron relación directa con el ataque inglés a esta ciudad española, y que culminó con un resonante éxito para España.
La importancia concedida por los estados en la Edad Moderna a la guerra y al mantenimiento del or... more La importancia concedida por los estados en la Edad Moderna a la guerra y al mantenimiento del orden público hizo que la mayor parte de su actividad política y recursos se destinasen a estos fines. Era muy poco lo que los estados podían hacer sin contar con el consenso y la colaboración de la sociedad que gobernaban, que reconocía las ventajas de esas funciones protectoras del estado. Aquellos estados y sociedades lograron movilizar recursos cada vez mayores hacia la guerra, y al hacerlo fueron construyendo nuevas relaciones políticas y formas de ejercicio de la autoridad, que terminaron afectando a la construcción del propio estado y sus relaciones con aquellas sociedades. La Red Imperial Contractor State Group (Red Imperial CSG) reúne a más de una veintena de investigadores de universidades americanas y europeas con el objetivo de estudiar cómo la movilización de recursos militares afectó a la construcción de la monarquía imperial hispánica. El marco cronológico elegido es amplio, desde el siglo XVII al primer tercio del siglo XIX, porque interesa enfatizar las continuidades y cambios en la etapa álgida de la construcción imperial. Sostenemos que la movilización de recursos de todo tipo (hombres, barcos, materiales, ideas) para sostener la autoridad imperial contribuyó a la construcción del Estado y de unas fuerzas armadas permanentes y profesionales, además de que las fórmulas y métodos empleados en esa movilización contribuyeron a definir las formas de gobierno y articularon las relaciones entre el centro y la periferia. En este congreso se pone el énfasis en los problemas derivados de una movilización de recursos para las armas navales, porque tuvo una mayor incidencia en la articulación de la Monarquía Imperial Hispánica.

El Estado fiscal-militar de Carlos III (1779-1783). Madrid: Marcial Pons, 2013, 459 p. Pocos conceptos introducidos recientemente en el debate académico sobre la Edad Moderna han sido más influyentes que el del Estado fiscal-militar, desarrollado en la década de 1990 por el historiador británico John Brewer 1. La idea que encierra es dilucidar la relación (o relaciones) existente entre la maquinaria fiscal de las grandes potencias del momento (en especial durante el siglo XVIII), y su no menos intrincada política militar, ciertamente expansiva y muy agresiva durante el Siglo de Las Luces. La relación guerra-dinero es aquí la clave. Sin embargo, el fenómeno es más complejo de lo que parece, porque engloba un trinomio que engarzaría los mecanismos
