The case of Belgium has thus been well studied, being the subject of some very good synopses. However, while several recent studies have used Brussels as a framework, a global and comparative academic summary specifically devoted to the capital does not exist. The present synopsis is not aimed at tracing the history of Brus- sels during World War I, or at presenting the results of the latest works on this subject, but rather at examining the material traces and the im- material heritage left by this conflict, based on analyses carried out in recent years. What remains of World War I in Brussels? Who is interested in it, and why? How does this conflict resonate today in Brussels’ memories? How are they reflected in the urban space? In other words, this synopsis reverses the historical temporality to observe the results of the sifting of time. This synopsis is divided into three parts. The first presents the institutional framework and the structures in which the memory and traces of World War I have been found for the past century in the Brussels region. The second examines some of its urbanistic, socio-economic and memorial repercussions. Finally, the third focuses on the less known immaterial traces which still nourish the public debate.

This conception has been inherent in the imperial imagination since the end of the 19th century. With the takeover of Congo by Belgium in 1908, the civilization effort of the Congo Free State (CFS) became the common denominator of the Belgian government, of the world of industry and commerce as well as missionaries. At the crossroads of these three pillars of Belgian-style colonialism, the colonial judiciary also contributes to the civilizing mission. Through the analysis of textual data of three colonial legal journals, this contribution explores the uses of the terms civilize/civilization/civilized by contributors, including the main one, magistrate Antoine Sohier. This analysis highlights the construction of a consensus around a single Civilization, an objective to be achieved by the Congolese populations adhering to the values promoted by the civilizing mis...

We try to show how historians, including historians of the medieval and early modern worlds, do define and study the processes of europeanization and at the same time are affected by those processes. Stricto sensu, europeanization may be defined as the top-down effects of the bottom-up process of 20th C. European political integration. This top-down europeanization in social, economic, legal and cultural issues is a relatively new field for contemporary historians. At the same time, they are affected by this europeanization which means new credits as well as a demand to write an official history of the European Union, and they try to adopt a critical attitude. Lato sensu, europeanization may be defined as the set of long-run processes from the Middle Ages onwards resulting in a common sense of European identity. European historians until today are affected by these processes as much as other Europeans. They have to resist any form of teleology, especially when studying medieval and early modern Europe. They should be aware how the European civilization’s big narrative, mainly based upon the Latin roman-catholic (and later also reformed) cultural tradition and written from within this tradition, may be at odds with the reality of continental Europe and its other cultural traditions (the Greek-Orthodox one, derived from Byzantium, and the Muslim one), and the reality of the European Union itself.
