Maurice Legendre (1878-1955), a French Hispanist, an expert in the Spanish region of Las Hurdes and head of the Casa de Velázquez, was linked with Salamanca since the beginning of his career. This city was the starting point from which he got in touch with Las Hurdes and, thanks to that, an international outlook penetrated what until that moment was considered a regional issue. For Legendre, Salamanca was also the city of his great friend Miguel de Unamuno and the region where the Peña de Francia was located. This mountain was for him a symbol of «the fraternity of two immortal nations», thus demolishing the borders between Spain and France. Salamanca was a significant region in the life of this Frenchman who saw in this city the opportunity to strengthen international bonds.

Unamuno was professor and rector of the University of Salamanca for many years and, crucially, in 1936 he travelled to England to receive an Honorary Degree from the University of Oxford. The first letter sent to Unamuno by a British correspondent was as early as in 1897 when Unamuno was a young professor and a budding writer. It was sent by Edward Spencer Dodgson, an expert in the Basque language who in broken Castilian introduced himself as a ‘fanatico para el Bascuence’ who had heard of Unamuno and wanted to meet him in Salamanca hoping that he was a ‘Bascongado de lengua y no solamente de raza’. It becomes obvious from a first glance of the content of the letters sent to Unamuno by the British that there is a strong presence of Spanish topics.

This work focuses on the journeys that different intellectuals and people inspired by them made to Las Hurdes in the first decades of the XXth century. In those years Spain's regeneration and national construction were two of the main national matters and the intellectuals played an important role on them. This research suggests the hypothesis of considering the intellectuals' commitment for the development of Las Hurdes as an identification with their mission in national regeneration and proposes to look at their journeys and actions in this region as an example and materialization of their will of building a nation.

Coupled with the fact that large numbers of his surviving letters relate to his own critical edition of Pliny, the correspondence contained in this catalogue is a fascinating testament to his involvement in all aspects of the publication of a work, from research of the sources and composition to correction, printing, dedication, legal rights, and sales, and it provides scholars today with an excellent source of information about printing, the publication process, and the book trade in Spain at this period. Many of the humanist’s correspondents seek his advice in these matters, and it seems likely that he played an influential part in the purchase of books for the education of the young prince Philip (who was to become Philip II) and of young men at court. His letters offer also significant insight into events and situations at the Universities of Salamanca and Alcalá.
Amongst el Pinciano’s correspondents may be found Cristóbal de Horozco, Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda, Francisco López de Villalobos, Lucio Marineo Sículo, and Juan de Vergara. A number of the letters also provide interesting information regarding their transmission as specific carriers are named and mentioned repeatedly.

Vives’s circle of correspondents was extensive and includes Desiderius Erasmus, Guillaume Budé, Henry VIII of England and his first wife Catherine of Aragon, Frans van Craneveldt, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, pope Adrian VI, and Philip II of Spain. The letters range in content from detailed discussions about the preparation of and publication of individual works by Budé, Erasmus, and Vives to the analysis of the current political events of the time — including Lutheran reform, the marriage of Henry VIII, the situation regarding European universities, the Italian wars, and the sack of Rome in May 1527. In particular, this correspondence reveals the deep and lasting friendships held between Vives and a number of leading intellectuals of his time and it reflects the quality of intellectual exchange in this particular period whilst shedding light on the teaching offered at Europe’s leading universities.
