The geographic and climatic conditions in this area make it propitious for observing the sky, and the rock art is adjacent to modern observatories. Analysis of the local geography, motifs, themes and orientations of these symbolically charged locations demonstrates links between the sites and cultural expression relating to observation of nature and the sky in the context of a shamanic cult of the mountains.

From the perspective of the landscape archaeology and the astronomy in culture we analyze the lunar cycles of 18.03, 18.61, and 19 years, including synodic and intercalary months. As hypothesis we assume the use of the Citua ceremony, in the lunar month of September, to determinate the solar year of 365 days and the 354 days lunar cycle, useful to predict eclipses (1 Metonic – 12 lunar months = 1 Saros). The analysis of twelve Incan sites in the Collasuyu, between the 18.5° and 34° south latitude, show us the importance of architecture, rock art, the gnomon, and horizon landmarks, to determinate not only solstices and equinoxes, but also major and minor lunar standstills, and the crossover related to the full Moon. We conclude that the Incas were able to predict lunar eclipses, with po...

Multiple evidence suggests that it has been increasing at an unprecedented rate at all spatial scales. Chile, which thanks to its unique environmental conditions has become one of the most prominent astronomical hubs of the world, seems to be no exception. In this paper we present the results of the first observing campaign aimed at quantifying the effects of artificial lights at night (ALAN) on the brightness and colors of Chilean sky. Through the analysis of photometrically calibrated all-sky images captured at four representative sites with an increasing degree of anthropization, and the comparison with state-of-the-art numerical models, we show that significant levels of light pollution have already altered the appearance of the natural sky even in remote areas. Our observations reveal that the light pollution level recorded in a small town of the Coquimbo Region is comparable with that of Flagstaff, a ten times larger Dark Sky city, and that a mid-size urban area door to the Atacama Desert displays photometric indicators of night sky quality that are typical of the most densely populated regions of Europe. Our results suggest that there is still much to be done in Chile to keep the light pollution phenomenon under control and thus preserve the darkness of its night sky - a natural and cultural heritage that is our responsibility to protect.

In past decades, measurement calculations took considerable time for the researcher. Now it takes only minutes since we have given ourselves the task of developing a program for archaeoastronomy called Hansometro. On this occasion, we present its first part that corresponds to solar measurements. For a specific date and location, each measured structure necessitates using the Sun to obtain azimuth and declination values for the height of the local horizon. When necessary, it also gives the values of lunar declinations (computing the parallax). The program renders the solar and lunar data for the whole year. The Hansometro is free software: with public access on the Internet and open to new elements in the calculus, applicable to the fieldwork in positional astronomy

Our purpose is to show possible continuities or ruptures in the creation and management of architectural and natural spaces, particularly those linked to the observation of astronomical phenomena with ceremonial and calendrical significance in the Andean world. We focus on Santiago, where we undertook topographical and horizon survey work at the Main Square, Metropolitan Cathedral, San Francisco Church and Santa Lucía Hill, and evaluate documentary and ethnographic sources. Using models developed in cultural astronomy and landscape archaeology, we found these places were ancient observation spots for the Sun and Moon around the solstices, equinoxes and lunar standstills. Sightlines (ceques) may have connected these places to potentially sacred elements of the environment from a central point located in the Main Square (haukaypata).

Water has historically played a major role in terms of its symbolic manifestations and associated rites and ritual contexts. After the beginning of the agricultural year, in late October, the local atacameños celebrate the cleansing of irrigation canals with a ceremony, which renews their commitment to the mountains (mallkus), and the tutelary spirits of the community. These spirits provide the necessary water for life. From this Andean ritual, we introduce ethnographic and archaeoastronomical evidence focused upon the symbolic, political, and cultural complex, and how these have reference to the agricultural cycle and its relationship with the surrounding landscape, i.e., water and mountains, as a possible Inca ceque system. We avoid primordialist approaches of the culture, and we show that the symbolic elements related to water and irrigation channels are part of the contemporary system of inter-ethnic relations.

In present-day Chile, thanks to the excellent quality of its northern skies and the longstanding presence of the most advanced international observatories in the world, Astronomy has become the science with the highest impact and international presence in the country. The astonishing development in both the quantity and quality of astrophysical research performed in Chilean Universities, however, has not been accompanied yet by a proportional academic interest in those equally important aspects of the discipline generally known as "Cultural Astronomy", i.e., a truly interdisciplinary research field that study the way(s) in which human societies come to know and rationalize astronomical phenomena. In this poster contribution, we introduce our research activities in the field of ethno-and archaeoastronomy, that are aimed at shining light on the main astronomical concepts and worldview of indigenous and rural communities in Northern Chile (i.e., Atacama and Coquimbo regions). Emphasis will be given on rock art sites, colonial-Hispanic churches and local community traditions: as a specific example, some preliminary results on a few petroglyphs located close to the Gemini-South telescope in Cerro Pachón will be briefly discussed.

significant impact on ecosystems and adverse effects on living organisms. Multiple evidence suggests
that it has been increasing at an unprecedented rate at all spatial scales. Chile, which thanks to its
unique environmental conditions has become one of the most prominent astronomical hubs of the world,
seems to be no exception. In this paper we present the results of the first observing campaign aimed
at quantifying the effects of artificial lights at night (ALAN) on the brightness and colors of Chilean
sky. Through the analysis of photometrically calibrated all-sky images captured at four representative
sites with an increasing degree of anthropization, and the comparison with state-of-the-art numerical
models, we show that significant levels of light pollution have already altered the appearance of the
natural sky even in remote areas. Our observations reveal that the light pollution level recorded in a
small town of the Coquimbo Region is comparable with that of Flagstaff, a ten times larger Dark Sky
city, and that a mid-size urban area door to the Atacama Desert displays photometric indicators of
night sky quality that are typical of the most densely populated regions of Europe. Our results suggest
that there is still much to be done in Chile to keep the light pollution phenomenon under control and
thus preserve the darkness of its night sky - a natural and cultural heritage that is our responsibility
to protect.

In past decades, measurement calculations took considerable time for the researcher. Now it takes
only minutes since we have given ourselves the task of developing a program for archaeoastronomy
called Hansometro. On this occasion, we present its first part that corresponds to solar measurements.
For a specific date and location, each measured structure necessitates using the Sun to obtain azimuth
and declination values for the height of the local horizon. When necessary, it also gives the values
of lunar declinations (computing the parallax). The program renders the solar and lunar data for the
whole year. The Hansometro is free software: with public access on the Internet and open to new
elements in the calculus, applicable to the fieldwork in positional astronomy
Cerro, Atacama region, northern Chile. We assume as a hypothesis the importance of the Lunar
zenith related to the phenomenon of major lunar standstills, the control of geographical latitude,
and the ushnus presence south of the Tropic of Capricorn. From the phenomenology perspective,
we develop the concepts of “dwelling or living in the World” related to the sky observation in the
Inca society. Finally, the results show us the use of the Moon for political and ritual purposes, linked
with the Citua festival during the September month and the eclipse predictions. This, as a mnemonic

Chile), as well as in other communities in the Atacama Desert, is a very important resource for the development of agriculture and livestock. Water has historically played a major role in terms of its symbolic manifestations and associated rites and ritual contexts. After the beginning of the agricultural year, in late October, the local atacameños celebrate the cleansing of irrigation canals with a ceremony, which
renews their commitment to the mountains (mallkus), and the tutelary spirits of the community. These spirits provide the necessary water for life. From this Andean ritual, we introduce ethnographic and archaeoastronomical evidence focused upon the symbolic, political, and cultural complex, and how these have reference to the agricultural cycle and its relationship with the surrounding landscape, i.e., water and
mountains, as a possible Inca ceque system. We avoid primordialist approaches of the culture, and we show that the symbolic elements related to water and irrigation channels are part of the contemporary system of inter-ethnic relations.
