The response of the pituitary gland was determined, with respect to the secretion of LH and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), after the intravenous injection of 50 ng LH-RF/100 g body weight. The LH-RF was injected 30–60 min after the administration of sodium pentobarbitone at either 13.30 h or 18.80 h of pro-oestrus. Blood samples were collected immediately before and at frequent intervals after the injection of LH-RF, and the concentration of LH and FSH in these samples was measured by radioimmunoassay. Ovariectomy at 10.00–11.00 h of dioestrus reduced the LH response to LH-RF injected at 14.00 h of pro-oestrus, while oestradiol benzoate administered immediately after ovariectomy restored and even aug...

The study of the gene networks involved in development is a mechanism for understanding the developmental process at its most basic level. An evolutionary change in a morphological feature or features must depend on a reorganization or co-option of one or more developmental gene regulatory network just as retention of an ancestral morphological trait must rely on retention of a common gene regulatory network. Studying two closely related classes in the same phylum with the same essential morphological feature yet with unique developmental characteristics provides insight into the evolution of these evolutionarily resolute gene regulatory networks. We have developed a new model system using brittle stars to further these studies. In this investigation I have identified key genes of the gene regulatory network (GRN) found in embryonic e...

Mediating factors associated with students' argumentation and discourse about SSI, as well as the public's understanding of science, has been identified as an important area of investigation in the field of science education. This mixed-methods design included over 300 students from Jamaica, South Africa, Sweden, Taiwan, and the United States. Students responded to instruments designed to assess their epistemological conceptualizations and justifications related to distributive justice, allocation of scarce medical resources, and epistemological beliefs over five dimensions related to scientific knowledge. Four iterations of a coding scheme produced over 97% inter-rater agreement for four independent coders. Results indicate the...

This cross-sectional study sought to assess the frequency, common predictors, and interrelationships of PTSD symptoms and PTG in breast cancer survivors (n = 65). In this sample, symptoms of PTSD and reports of PTG were common and were not significantly related to one another. Greater social constraints on talking about breast cancer and perception of cancer as a traumatic stressor were associated with greater PTSD symptomatology. Younger age and perception of cancer as a traumatic stressor were associated with greater PTG. Findings suggest the central role of subjective appraisal in adjustment to cancer. Psychosocial interventions should be sensitive to the potential for PTG, both in treatment design and in assessment of outcomes.
