Destes, 324.834 vivem em cidades e 572.083 em áreas rurais, o que corresponde aproximadamente a 0,47% da população total do país. Os povos indígenas contemporâneos estão espalhados por todo o território brasileiro. Vários desses povos também habitam países vizinhos. No Brasil, a grande maioria das comunidades indígenas vive em terras coletivas, declaradas pelo governo federal para seu usufruto exclusivo. As chamadas Terras Indígenas(TIs) somam, hoje, 704. A maioria das TIs estão localizadas nos estados da Amazônia Legal brasileira e a população indígenas é de 433.363 personas1. Foram registradas 274 línguas indígenas e são faladas no país por 37,4% dos índios com mais de cinco anos de idade. Do total, seis mil deles falam mais de duas línguas. As línguas mais usadas no Brasil são o tikuna (com 34 mil falantes), o guarani kaiowá (com 26,5 mil), o kaingang (22 mil), o xavante (13,3 mil) e o yanomami (12,7 mil)2.
