Editorial, porque a Perspectiva, cujo interesse pela arte cênica e particularmente pela produção teatral brasileira já se expressou em quase duzentos títulos dedicados aos diferentes aspectos e enfoques deste gênero de criação, tinha em mira desde há muito reunir um repertório que fosse acessível e confiável aos estudiosos e aos praticantes de nosso universo cênico. Acadêmico, porque, desde logo, os organizadores pensaram em trazer para esta obra a grande contribuição que as pesquisas e estudos universitários proporcionaram para a enorme ampliação e aprofundamento históricos e estéticos do que foi, tem sido e é a operação artística e a correspondente reflexão crítica neste domínio da cultura nacional. Conjugando esses dois planos, a presente obra, que colocamos à disposição de nosso público leitor, incorpora num volume abrangente, e à luz de uma cuidadosa filtragem acadêmica, o que de mais característico e significativo o moderno teatro brasileiro realizou.

Este livro vem demonstrar que o autor de Iracema dedicou-se também com igual diligência à criação do teatro nacional. Com base numa pesquisa minuciosa, realizada em jornais e revistas do século XIX e em arquivos, João Roberto Faria reconstitui a carreira de dramaturgo de Alencar, pondo em relevo seus sucessos e fracassos, bem como suas rumorosas polêmicas travadas com a polícia, com os críticos, com o Conservatório Dramático e até com um empresário teatral. "José de Alencar e o Teatro", além de preencher uma lacuna deixada pelos biógrafos do escritor, é também um estudo crítico das peças de Alencar, apreendidas nas circunstâncias histórico-sociais e culturais em que foram escritas e encenadas, como afirma o autor. Isso não significa, no entanto, repulsa aos processos de estruturação interna da peças. Elas são analisadas como fato estético, ao mesmo tempo em que são estabelecidas as ralações que mantêm com a organização social do país notadamente a partir de 1850 e com a própria situação do teatro brasileiro, na época desenvolvendo-se à sombra e sob a influência do teatro francês.

A repercussão junto ao público foi extraordinária e os desdobramentos surpreendentes. Nossos principais escritores e intelectuais José de Alencar, Machado de Assis, Quintino Bocaiúva e Joaquim Manoel de Macedo, para citar os mais conhecidos defenderam na imprensa os postulados estéticos e ideológicos das peças francesas e procuraram dotar o país de uma dramaturgia com as mesmas características. Em "O Teatro Realista no Brasil", um estudo de cunho histórico, crítico e comparatista, João Roberto Faria (...) reconstitui com base numa pesquisa abrangente e minuciosa às feições desse período que Arthur Azevedo qualificou numa crônica de 1899 como incontestavelmente o mais brilhante do nosso teatro.
