As institutionally nested agents, actors such as unions and labor prosecutors, inspectors, and judges engage with and sometimes take action against Walmart within these shifting institutional trajectories. GIC theory is applied to explain different dynamics of contestation and conflict around the company’s operation over time in Brazil as well as between that country and the comparator cases of Mexico, Argentina, and Chile. Anti-unionism, repressive familialism as a workplace authority regime type, work flexibility, and structural and associational power of unions are discussed as key organizing concepts.

The aim is to set up new local standards as social and environmental indicators for the so-called Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs). Market incentives such as organic certification, expertise and know-how on seeds and fruit collecting, and the empowerment of rural families in monitoring institutional arrangements (cooperatives and smallholders associations) are fostered by Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in cooperation with the private sector. We argue that stronger governance mechanisms between private incentives and local authorities are necessary in order to promote tools and instruments to measure and evaluate the local sustainable development. This chapter is mainly focused on the observational and qualitative aspects based on empirical data collected during fieldwork researches conducted in local extractive communities in the Amazon rainforest.

It aimed to contribute to empirical studies on health and occupational safety in extractivism, still incipient in Brazil due to the lack of technical-scientific support and the lack of specific regulation on the area. The research was conducted by the collection of primary and observational data that point out the risks to health and safety to which collectors are exposed to and the methods to prevent accidents in order to identify possible improvements to working conditions in a context in which labor regulation standards for autonomous, informal and extractive workers in the Amazon is practically inexistent. This paper’s methodology is characterized as an embedded case study along with the collection of quantitative and qualitative data with the adoption of mixed m...
