The history of the phenomenon of memory inside the sociological field reflects the foundational dichotomies of the discipline: macro × micro dimensions and biological × social realms. Many of the hurdles and discussions of Memory Studies still lie upon these dichotomies. Although Elias has never investigated this topic properly, he has a rich discussion on relationality, interdisciplinarity, and processuality. These three aspects would dissolve many of the actual hurdles faced by Memory Studies.

For that, we discuss the current literature that reviews the institutional and socio-legal-political changes and the news and mediatic reports on these institutions published in the major newspapers of the country. We also interviewed former inmates that provided their personal perspectives of their experiences inside the institutions. The attempt to weave a macro perspective (sociological studies and mediatic reports) with a micro perspective (biographical accounts) aims to compose a comprehensive picture of the institutional reality and changes over the decades that challenge the notion of a unique narrative. The historical span covered the end of the 19th Century when the first correctional institutions were established until 1990, when the Child and Adolescent Statute was enacted.

We point out some conceptual issues within these works regarding memory’s ontological status. Finally, we suggest a new avenue of interpretation for the phenomenon of memory from a sociological standpoint by (i) considering Cognitive Sciences contributions on the definition of “memory” and (ii) devising a proper social ontology for this kind of definition.

Departing from classical psychoanalytical approaches, we challenge the classical concept of trauma by considering the phenomenon of understanding. From the perspective of the Sociology of Understanding by A. Glaeser, we bring to the fore the relationship between memory and understanding as phenomena that play out over time depending on the social relations. Because of that, emotions are reframed through emotional regimes playing a central role in self-narratives constructions. This discussion is based on qualitative data (ethnography, netnography, and biographic interviews) collected from former inmates of a correctional institution of children in the countryside of Brazil.

By resuming some relevant German sociological writings (esp. Simmel, Weber and Elias), we explore how they are essays profoundly influenced the first Brazilian (pre) sociological writings. At the beginning of the institutionalization of Social Sciences in Brazil, we find essayists (esp. Buarque de Holanda, Freye and Prado) who wrote essential texts on the nation formation and Brazilian ethos. Its non-systematic, literary style and historical arguments join them together in what would be later called as the “Brazilian Essayism.” After these first writings, although a scientific wave flooded Brazilian Sociology, the discipline have always referred (positively or negatively) to these seminal works.

Thereby the overview is a help for the study of his work in progress, and comparing and contrasting his account with the other founders of the analysis of collective intentionality (Bratman, Gilbert, and Searle), and their related topics, for example, I-mode and we-mode, collective commitment, social groups, cooperation, and institutions, and the ongoing contemporary analysis. It is concluded that the hard core of Tuomela's social ontology is a sociology of membership.

Artificial intelligence can no longer be treated as an independent object of social life since it... more Artificial intelligence can no longer be treated as an independent object of social life since it has flooded every corner of contemporary society. It has completely changed how we acquire, produce, and interact with knowledge. Even though the scientific enterprise pioneered the development of artificial intelligence knowledge, it is in daily life that artificial intelligence is changing how we deal with knowledge. The reason for that is the rise of platforms as a contemporary digital environment where knowledge and cultural items have specific ways of being produced and interacted. Artificial Intelligence is completely embedded in daily life practices, such as navigating across the cities, recalling a memory, writing an email (and even a narrative), knowing and socializing with others, listening to music, searching for information, or creating a piece of art, either a music or a picture. Each AI engenders different impacts on how humans relate to knowledge daily. Artificial intelligence can produce representations analogous to human ones without even understanding our thoughts, feelings, and expectations. This fact draws a boundary on our mutual interactions with these technologies and certainly puts the brakes on what we can expect from them. In this paper, we draw on the impacts and changes artificial intelligence brought to knowledge production and comprehension in daily life.

As an abstract term, artificial intelligence has been understood both as a discipline and a "robot's mind." In the twenty and twenty-first centuries, cultural representations in comics, television shows, and movies converged with public lectures about the risks of A.I. by prominent public figures such as Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk. Neri analyzes how this cultural and intellectual miscellany shapes the way we perceive artificial intelligence and whether this perception is universal or restricted to the Western world. Abstract: Offers the first complete history in English of sociology in Brazil Highlights the political and institutional changes that were fundamental to the development of sociology in Brazil Presents new research and analysis that maps new developments in Brazilian sociology, publications and centers of production, using qualitative and quantitative data This book provides an overview of the institutional and intellectual development of sociology in Brazil from the early 1900s to the present day; through military coups, dictatorships and democracies. It charts the profound impact of sociology on Brazilian public life and how, in turn, upheavals in the history of the country and its universities affected its scientific agenda. This engaging account highlights the extent of the discipline's colonial inheritance, its early institutionalization in São Paulo, and its congruent rise and fall during repeated regime changes. The authors' analysis draws on original research that maps the concentration of research interests, new developments, publications and centers of production in Brazilian sociology, using qualitative and quantitative data. It concludes with a reflection on the potential impact of the recent far-right turn in Brazilian politics on the future of the discipline. This book contributes a valuable country study to the history of sociology and will appeal to a range of social scientists in addition to scholars of disciplinary historiography, intellectual and Brazilian history.

Abstract: The research falls into the scope of Sociology of Memory (more broadly Sociology of Mind and Sociology of Knowledge). From this field, we assume a relational, procedural, and interpretative approaches for analysing processes of remembering and identity formation among former inmates of an institution for abandoned minors. Memory and identity are nested phenomena with biopsychosocial dimensions which have been studied among many areas. Thus, we also considered arguments from the Cognitive Sciences and Philosophy of Mind. The thesis focuses on three main debates. The first part takes into account the social, historical, and legal aspects of early institutionalization, abandonment, and stigma. The second part focuses on ontological and epistemological issues of memory to propose a theoretical-methodological synthesis that enables us to understand mnemonic-identity processes over time. This debate also considers contemporary conditions regarding the impact and role of social technologies on sociability and knowledge production. The micropolitical dimension of the mnemonic-identity processes of knowledge formation is approached by the "Sociology of Understanding". The third part of this work analyzes narratives on the institutional past of the former inmates who attended a governmental institution in the Brazilian countryside between the 1940s and 1990s. We carried out a procedural analysis, multi-data and multi-methods (ethnography, netnography, in- depth interview, extraction of textual data on social networks) in order to understand how collaborative mnemonic-identity processes play out over time by emphasizing how some versions of the past are validated at the expense of others. We observed that the mutual adjustments of understanding of past experiences are pushed to a coherent biographical narrative that attends specific emotional regimes. As a consequence, contradictory narratives to the ones validated by the network of former inmates are marginalized and silenced.

This article analyzes the processes of remembering and identity formation in a present-day mnemonic community consisting of former inmates of a total government institution for abandoned juveniles in Brazil’s countryside during the Dictatorship Regime. Finally, we show how divergent understandings of their past are not validated within their community and consequently dismissed from their narratives of triumph.

This article analyzes the processes of remembering and identity formation in a present-day mnemonic community consisting of former inmates of a total government institution for abandoned juveniles in Brazil’s countryside during the Dictatorship Regime. Through the sharing of their remembrances, they mutually shaped their life’s stories in narratives of triumph. For dealing with the empirical data, we acknowledged that memory is a complex phenomenon which must be approached in an interdisciplinary way, considering concepts draw from Cognitive Sciences to Sociology. First, we have collected their remembrances on Social Media, in-depth interviews, and fieldwork over 4years. Second, we analyzed the dynamics of validation; the network of authorities; and the emotional regimes among the former inmates that determined what is selected and interpreted as collective understandings of the past. We took a relational and processual sociological approach for analyzing how collaborative identity-mnemonic processes are also triggered, supported, and built by the material and cultural surrounding within mnemonic communities. For that, we assume a "distributed memory", and "distributed self" conceptions. Finally, we show how divergent understandings of their past are not validated within their community and consequently dismissed from their narratives of triumph.
English: The study gives an overview of Raimo Tuomela's philosophy of sociality and social ontology. It is shown how the subjects of his analysis of the foundation of the social domain are connected.
