There is a science to target setting. Unfortunately the behavioral impact of target setting on performance is underestimated. This can lead to serious consequences such as game playing, overcharging customers, or demotivating competent managers. This book will help you fill the gap in target setting for performance. The pivotal issue in target setting is that it is an art as well as a science. Perhaps more of an art, requiring a balance between the psychologies of the people taking initiatives, the science of estimating probabilities and aligning with strategies, coupled with the motivational effects of incentives. You will also be introduced to some of the important methods in target setting such as forecasting, sensitivity analysis, and probability analysis; all of which include practical examples to show how these techniques can be directly applied. In the end, you’ll learn how interrelated the various parts of organizational activities are and how they impact on each other, which is important since target setting must include an understanding of the organizational context (e.g., people, competitive environment, structure, strategy) as well as the impact of incentive compensation and information

We examine this question using data from a sample of 522 managers and professionals in period 0 (and 434 in period 1) from a large Australasian corporation over a two year period. Period 0 is a pre shock period and period 1 is a post shock period. We find that for the overall two years that the subjective is an upward adjustment to the objective to take into account: (1) target difficulty, the spread between upper limit and lower limit of unit performance; (2) shared risk, that is organizational interdependencies; and (3) downside risk, which is the opportunity loss function that the employees faced in not meeting the maximum bonus allowed. However, in examining the pre shock period and post shock per...

Public sector organisations are beginning to consider whether they too should integrate technology into their operations, specifically with projects such as websites, intranets or systems for communication. This study aims to consider whether the implentation of e-government in a local public sector organisation has enabled this organisation to achieve their customer orientation in order to realise improved levels of performance. This study provides a number of useful insights. Firstly all managers appear to understand the customer orientation of the organisation and thus the importance of a focus on the customer. There seems to be a difficulty however of implementing this customer orientation in practice. The lack of effective customer measures means managers tend to focus on internal measures. While managers perceive there to be a number of potential benefits, the majority of th...

The products and services are more expensive while employees are paid less than normal commercial banks. To explore this Islamic bank, two questions guide the research: What processes does an Islamic bank undertake to build trust with employees and customers; and how do boundary systems of an Islamic bank influence the building of trust with employees and customers? The study of the first research question leads to the identification and description of several symbolically significant practices that serve to bond customers and employees to the bank. These practices are best described using the language of Islam and include aqad (the oral reciting of the bank loan agreement between the bank the customer), doa’ (a supplication or prayer), tazkirah (short religious talks at the morning meeting), and zakat (almsgiving). The bonding of customers and employees to the bank is further reinforced by an influential boundary system...
Although corporate strategy helps in differentiation, positioning, and aligning the organisation ... more Although corporate strategy helps in differentiation, positioning, and aligning the organisation to align itself internally to be competitive, it is not enough. A separate enterprise information system (EIS) strategy must be put in place do deal with external realities. This is particularly crucial to a software start-up in its prototype development stage. Development time must be as short as possible. Two-way communications is possible through EIS. This paper examines a start-up, scans its business environments and explores opportunities, threats, and appropriate corporate strategy. Enterprise resource planning (ERP) and its evolution provides insights to understanding the concept of EIS strategy that follows.

Design/methodology/approach – A case study approach explores strategy and performance management system design through the actions of Air Asia. Findings – Air Asia’s successful low cost strategy is underpinned by a variety of unique business activities and performance management processes. Together with the generic operational practices of low cost carriers (e.g., standardised fleet), their unique position is maintained though its employee-centred human resource practices, a supportive organisational culture, and the clear and consistent communication of its brand. Current changes in the expectations of airline passengers, however, are likely to require AirAsia to adopt a hybrid strategy called the ‘new world’ carrier. We fin...

Design/methodology/approach – This paper draws on a single organization case study across seven stores, and uses a survey, archival documents, open-ended questions and researcher interaction with employees and managers.
