We are surrounded by images as never before: on Flickr, Facebook, and YouTube; on thousands of te... more We are surrounded by images as never before: on Flickr, Facebook, and YouTube; on thousands of television channels; in digital games and virtual worlds; in media art and science. Without new efforts to visualize complex ideas, structures, and systems, today's information explosion would be unmanageable. The digital image represents endless options for manipulation; images seem capable of changing interactively or even autonomously. This volume offers systematic and interdisciplinary reflections on these new image worlds and new analytical approaches to the visual. Imagery in the 21st Century examines this revolution in various fields, with researchers from the natural sciences and the humanities meeting to achieve a deeper understanding of the meaning and impact of the image in our time. The contributors explore and discuss new critical terms of multidisciplinary scope, from database economy to the dramaturgy of hypermedia, from visualizations in neuroscience to the image in bio art. They consider the power of the image in the development of human consciousness, pursue new definitions of visual phenomena, and examine new tools for image research and visual analysis.

We report herein that expression of α2β1 integrin increased human erythroleukemia K562 transfecta... more We report herein that expression of α2β1 integrin increased human erythroleukemia K562 transfectant (KX2C2) cell movement after extravasation into liver parenchyma. In contrast, a previous study demonstrated that α2β1 expression conferred a stationary phenotype to human rhabdomyosarcoma RD transfectant (RDX2C2) cells after extravasation into the liver. We therefore assessed the adhesive and migratory function of α2β1 on KX2C2 and RDX2C2 cells using a α2β1-specific stimulatory monoclonal antibody (mAb), JBS2, and a blocking mAb, BHA2.1. In comparison with RDX2C2 cells, KX2C2 were only weakly adherent to collagen and laminin. JBS2 stimulated α2β1-mediated interaction of KX2C2 cells with both collagen and laminin resulting in increases in cell movement on both matrix proteins. In the presence of Mn2+, JBS2-stimulated adhesion on collagen beyond an optimal level for cell movement. In the following chapter, the authors will discuss the development of medical imaging and, throug... more In the following chapter, the authors will discuss the development of medical imaging and, through specific case studies, its application in elucidating the role of fluid mechanical forces in cardiovascular disease development and therapy (namely the connection between flow patterns and circulatory system disease - atherosclerosis and aneurysms) by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The research carried in the Biomedical Simulation Laboratory can be described as a multi-step process through which, from the reality of the human body through the generation of a mathematical model that is then translated into a visual representation, a refined visual representation easily understandable and used in the clinic is generated. Thus, the authors’ daily research generates virtual representations of blood flow that can serve two purposes: a) that of a model for a phenomenon or disease or b) that of a model for an experiment (non-invasive way of determining the best treatment option).

It is well established that alpha2beta1 integrin functions as a receptor for collagen and laminin... more It is well established that alpha2beta1 integrin functions as a receptor for collagen and laminin; whereas alpha4beta1 integrin binds fibronectin and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1). In the present study, we showed that rat myeloma YB2/0 cells constitutively expressed alpha4beta1 but not alpha2beta1 integrin. Transfection of cDNA of mouse a2 integrin subunit resulted in the expression of heterologous alpha2beta1 integrin on YB2/0 cells (YBmalpha2). The expression of alpha2beta1 conferred YBmalpha2 cells the ability to interact with collagen and laminin. In comparison with mock transfected YB2/0 cells (YBpF), YBmalpha2 cells exhibited increases in the binding and migration on VCAM-1; in contrast, both YBpF and YBmalpha2 were similar in their interactions with fibronectin or fibronectin fragment FN-40 that contains the binding site for alpha4beta1 integrin. Here they present a case study showing how paradigms they codeveloped for visually abstracting cerebral aneurysm blood flows were extrapolated to sonification and bimodal representations, and how a close interdisciplinary partnership was effected by guiding engineering students versed in the arts and artists adept with digital technology toward final outcomes greater than the sum of their parts.

It is well established that a biphasic relationship exists between the adhesive strength of β1 in... more It is well established that a biphasic relationship exists between the adhesive strength of β1 integrins and their ability to mediate cell movement. Thus, cell movement increases progressively with adhesive strength, but beyond a certain point of optimal interaction, cell movement is reduced with further increases in adhesive function. The interplay between the various kinase and phosphatase activities provides the balance in β1 integrin-mediated cell adhesion and migration. In the present study, the significance of protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTP) and ser/thr protein phosphatases (PP) in α4β1 and α5β1 integrin-mediated mouse melanoma B16F1 cell anchorage and migration on fibronectin was characterized using phosphatase inhibitors. At low fibronectin concentration, α5β1 functioned as the predominant receptor for cell movement; a role for α4β1 in B16F1 cell migration increased progressively with fibronectin concentration. Treatment of B16F1 cells with PTP inhibitors, sodium orthovanadate (Na3VO4) and phenylarsine oxide (PAO), or PP-1/2A inhibitor, okadaic acid (OA), abolished cell movement. Inhibition of cell movement by PAO and OA was associated by a reduction in the adhesive strength of α4β1 and α5β1. In contrast, treatment of B16F1 cells with Na3VO4 resulted in selective stimulation of the adhesive function of α5β1, but not α4β1. Therefore, our results demonstrate that (i) both PTP and PP-1/2A have roles in cell movement, (ii) modulation of cell movement by PTP and PP-1/2A may involve either a stimulation or reduction of β1 integrin adhesive strength, and (iii) distinct phosphatase-mediated signaling pathways for differential regulation of the various β1 integrins exist.
