In recent times, researchers have emphasized the role of epigenetic mechanisms as the underlying molecular foundation for how environmental factors influence biological processes. Consequently, the field of epigenetics has gained growing prominence within the realm of psychiatry as a means to understand these intricate connections. This qualitative research paper explores the role of epigenetics in mental health disorders, focusing on the impact of environmental factors on gene expression. By examining the complex interplay between nature and nurture, the study provides insights into the influence of epigenetic modifications on psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We performed semi-structured interviews with a broad range of psychiatric, genetic, and epig...

It was first introduced by John Todd in 1955, based on the literary chronicles of the strange encounters described by Lewis Carroll in Alice in Wonderland books. A 30-year-old healthy male presented to the doctor’s office with left-sided headaches lasting 24 hours and preceded by an aura. During these auras, the patient was experiencing erratic behaviors consistent with the phenomena experienced by Alice, the main character in the world-famous story. He reported objects being larger and further away than they really were and his hands appearing smaller than they really were. Symptoms lasted up to 45 minutes. All clinical and diagnostic workups and evaluations were unremarkable, and the patient was treated for migraines with auras using Valproic Acid. Du...

Psychiatric illnesses are in their own right a complex constellation of factors that shape an individual’s mental health. Vitamin D is critical not only for bone health but also for suitable brain development and functioning. Most individuals worldwide have insufficient levels of vitamin D. Not only are adults affected, but adolescents are also predisposed to this deficiency. This is also true for individuals with mental health disorders. Low levels of vitamin D are directly correlated with depression, schizophrenia, seasonal affective disorder, and cognitive dysfunction. Adolescents were studied to investigate the relationship between low levels of vitamin D concentrations and mental health conditions, including psychosis, and to report on the current knowledge about the assessment and t...

According to the American Telemedicine Association, telehealth or telemedicine is defined as the usage of medical information from one site to another through electronic communication with the goal of improving a client’s overall health through emails, cellular phones, two-way videos, and conference calls. With the current Covid-19 pandemic, hospitals (especially those with mental health units or free-standing psychiatry facilities) are seldomly able to keep up with the influx of mental health patients without being turned away or having to wait for an extended period of time. Through telemedicine, those barriers have been lifted providing more efficient and enhanced access to care for everyone, especially those seeking mental health services. This review paper attempts to establish that despite the observati...

Poor working conditions, lack of protective personal equipment (PPE), short-staffed departments, medication shortage, depleted hospital beds, and ventilators have had a direct correlation with occupational burnout syndrome (BOS) and psychological distress among frontline healthcare workers (HCW) and their physical and mental well-being. The limitless hours on shift, the abundant number of daily cases, and the upturn of fatalities have contributed to the stressors among HCWs during this pandemic. In this paper, we will examine the occupational burnout syndrome and the psychological distress among HCWs working frontline during the pandemic. Also, the paper will explore whether there is a correlation between occupational burnout syndrome, mental and psychological distress, and COVID-19. The goal of this research is to acquire and establish if there had been an increase...

Ixodes ticks infected with Borrelia burgdorferi, that come in contact with any area of the human body, typically stay attached for a period of 36-48 hours in order for them to completely transfer the bacteria into the host. The symptoms manifested typically inhabit the nervous system, musculoskeletal system and the cardiovascular system. New methods in the diagnostic techniques have been in ongoing research including the SYBR Green I/PI assay which quantifies living bacteria after dosage completion along with molecular testing which uses PCR of synovial fluid, blood, tissue biopsy, and cerebrospinal fluid to detect for an imbalance in OspA and its respective chromosomal targets. Current diagnostic measures of ELISA and Western blot are not reliable due to individuals vaccinated with Lymerix testing positive ...

The three types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Of those, basal and squamous cell carcinomas are the most diagnosed skin cancer types. Both of which are curable, however they can mar skin in addition to being expensive to fight. Melanoma places in third for being diagnosed. All three types of skin cancer are linked to ultraviolet light rays which come from the sun, tanning beds and sunlamps. The checklist for early detection includes being aware of changes to your skin, visiting a licensed dermatologist or primary care physician to receive a body scan and assess for any skin concerns. By the same token, phone apps, recognition technologies, and devices for early detection have become a few of the forward-thinking prevention techniques for the future because of the knowledge that early detection leads to a better survival outcome. These phone apps analyzing digital i...
