Kävelemistä tarkastellaan artikkelissa ensisijassa mikrotason ilmiönä, yksilön kirjoittamana kokemuksena. Lähdemateriaalina artikkelissa hyödynnetään Anders Johan Sjögrenin (1794–1855) päiväkirja-aineistoa. Vuonna 1813 Sjögren käveli noin 26 peninkulman pituisen matkan kotiseudultaan Iitistä Turkuun aloittaakseen yliopisto-opinnot. Tämän yksittäisen kävelyn lisäksi Sjögren merkitsi päiväkirjaansa arkista liikkumistaan Turussa opiskeluvuosiensa aikana. Sjögrenin kävelyrutiinien kautta artikkeli nostaa esille kävelemisen historiaa koskevassa tutkimuksessa vähemmän käsitellyn arkisen ja toisteisen kävelemisen.

This article contributes to this discussion by presenting a method for detecting text reuse in a large corpus of digitized texts. Empirically, the article is based on the corpus of newspapers and journals from the collection of the National Library of Finland. Often, digitized repositories offer only partial views of what actually was published in printed form. The Finnish collection is unique, however, since it covers all published issues up to the year 1920. This article has a two-fold objective: methodologically, it explores how computational methods can be developed so that text reuse can be effectively identified; empirically, the article concentrates on how the circulation of texts developed in Finland from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century and what this reveals about the transformation of public discourse in Finland. According to our results, the reuse of texts was an integral part of the press throughout the studied period, which, on the other hand, was part of a wider transnational practice.

It focuses on Finland which, in 1809, became a Grand Duchy of the Russian empire. The article concentrates on early mass phenomena as embryos of an emerging modern culture. We scrutinize our subject through three different lenses , starting with social infectivity on a minor scale, the unrest caused by students. We then investigate the contagiousness of ideas seen through the press as a news medium in the 1820s. The last section concentrates on the news about cholera and its rapid spread during the early 1830s. We argue that historical embryos were formations of social relationality, composed of affects, beliefs, expectations and sentiments. These formations of emotive dynamics had the capacity to be imitated; they became components of larger social entities by extending their contagiousness to new regions and populations.

In the Computational History and the Transformation of Public Discourse in Finland (COMHIS) project, we found 61 million occurrences of similarity, which formed 13.8 million clusters of reuse. This material also included strikingly slow processes of repetition, and the longest reuse cases were almost as long as the time span of the project. In sum, 2.03 million clusters, 15 per cent of the total amount, were longer than 12 months. As well, 76,259 clusters spanned over 20 years or more. The longest span was 146 years. The paper explores the volume and nature of this long-term text reuse in the Finnish press and analyses three distinctive features of slow repetition: newspapers as a site of memory, newspapers as an archive and the political ramifications of reuse. The paper argues that the habit of reprinting old texts aimed to bridge the gap between past and present, emphasising the continuity between old and new. On the other hand, there were cases where past texts were activated precisely for the opposite purposes, to obscure the past and to show how different the bygone world was.

While the reprinting of particular texts in a range of different locations can be regarded as an old and well-acknowledged practice in the press, not until the digitization of these historical documents has a systematic examination of it become possible. This primary research material derives from the digitized OCR corpus of newspapers and periodicals published by the National Library of Finland. In the COMHIS project, we have developed a text-mining software, based on NCBI BLAST, which effectively recognizes and enables the location of textual repetitions. We have found approximately 13.8 million clusters of text reuse. As well as an introduction to the methods and uses of this version of BLAST, the article will also explore the results gained through these and what they reveal about the nature of the circulation of information in the Finnish press during this period. The article shows that the copying and reuse of texts was a remarkable part of it.

Oireellista on, että tunnetusta sähköisestä hakuteoksesta The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy löytyy artikkeli otsikolla "Enlightenment", kun taas romantiikkaa edustaa hakusana "19th-Century Romantic Aesthetics". Jos romantiikalle haluaa etsiä jonkinlaista tunnuspiir...

By analysing several European newspaper depositories, the article sheds light on the role of newspapers in the spread of revolutionary news in European media space across various political borders and language barriers, connecting continental Europe, Great Britain, and Ireland with the Scandinavian frontiers of the Russian Empire. In our empirical case study, we examine how information on the February Revolution travelled to the Grand Duchy of Finland, an area situated at the crossroads of different communication networks that was influenced by the reactionary politics of Russia but still culturally connected with Sweden. Benefitting from digitized collections of Austrian, British, German, Finnish, and Swedish newspapers, this article provides a transnational perspective on the mid-nineteenth-century European media landscape.
