It is one of a huge collection of miracle stories recently gathered in the Netherlands: 5

Patrick Chatelion Counet, studying early Jewish monotheism in relation to the divinity of Jesus as proclaimed in the texts of the New Testament, also comes to the conclusion that twentieth-century theological and exegetical assumptions about biblically-based monotheism are in need of revision. Another compelling proposal for revision of the study of early Christian monotheism is formulated by Celtic and Religious Studies scholar Jacqueline Borsje. German Romanticism, according to Bert Blans and Marcel Poorthuis, was not only marked by a well known romantic interest in "Greek gods," but also by a serious attempt to face polytheism as a genuine questioning of Christian belief. A less apologetic and theologically more challenging task, however, is the exploration of the significance of monotheism in modern Western culture, taking into account both its problematic and promising aspects. New Testament scholar Patrick Chatelion Counet continues the historical and exegetical exploration of the boundaries of Jewish monotheism, turning to the question of how the early Christian identification of Jesus with the Lord and God relates to this monotheism. God is one and universal because God is present in all traces of yearning and hope for redemption, in all their multiplicity and pluralism. Keywords: early Christian identification; Jewish monotheism; modern Western culture

The concerned works of art have remarkable common traits in their disputed imagery. They connect almost palpable and often naked human bodies to iconic sacred scenes of Western Christian culture and art, such as the suffering Jesus Christ on the cross, the Last Supper, the Virgin Mary with the child Jesus, or the Pieta (Mater Dolorosa). Well known examples are works such as Ecce Homo by Elisabeth Ohlson (Sweden), I.N.R.I. by Serge Bramly and Bettina Rheims (France), Yo Mama’s Last Supper by Renee Cox (USA), Our Lady by Alma Lopez (USA), The Blood Ties by Katarzyna Kozyra (Poland), and Passion by Dorota Nieznalska (Poland). More recently, also songs and acts consisting of social, political, and religious critique, performed ‘provocatively’ by pop and punk artists such as Madonna, Lady Gaga, and the Russian formation Pussy Riot, have become publicly contested for comparable reasons. All these works of visual or performative art have been accused — more or less formally — of blasphemy or sacrilege, which contributed to both their notoriety and their controversiality by causing huge media attention.

It explores an actual example of a neighborhood pastor's work: the writings of Pastor Monique. The chapter analyzes this text in three ways: as reportage, as a literary creation, and as a typical example of a specific genre, that is, the Passion narrative. Pastor Monique described in her journal how the people in her neighborhood, a mix of immigrants and indigenous Dutch, reacted to the murder of five-year old Muslim girl Yasmina in October 2000. The chapter investigates whether, and how, stories of suffering and survival can set in motion a practice of public engagement and what roles the neighborhood pastor, her theological agenda, and religious imagery and frames of reference might play in this. Keywords: Passion narrative; Pastor Monique; reportage; storytelling; Yasmina

Launched in 2011, Religion and Gender has established itself as the leading interdisciplinary journal for the study of gender and religion from inter- and transdisciplinary perspectives. The 10th anniversary of Religion and Gender is of course also an ideal occasion for looking back, reflecting and moving forward. In this anniversary editorial, we hope to accomplish looking back and reflecting on the journal developments as well as moving forward, or at least generating openings towards new directions. The latter means that we want to rethink the main stakes of Religion and Gender in terms of what should be crucial in discussions about religion and gender for the next 10 years.
