(Giroux, 1997:47) The movies are often appealing due to the surprising encounter between the white teacher and the racially mixed, non-white class. The contrast between their cultural habits and the asymmetry of their power relations is often evened out by education, which sends out a message that anyone can make it in the American society, as long as they are willing to train themselves intellectually and adopt ‘American’ values. In this paper, I to analyze how the encounter between the white teacher and the non-white students is visualized. This clash of values and cultures forms the departure for the narrative, since it constructs an asymmetrical power relation that enables the idea that the students should en can pursue a more successful life.

I will firstly outline the ways in which the maternal can bring about other modes of signification. Secondly, I examine how the figuration of the pregnant body evokes new ideas on differentiation. Finally, I will look into the new modalities of subjectivity that the previous findings entail. Taking the feminine (and in particular, the maternal) seriously, might fundamentally change our beliefs about these processes.

This perspective on subjectivity has however led to an individualist culture, in which interdependency is seen as a weakness. Furthermore, the ways in which subjects are embedded in sociocultural frameworks is systematically overlooked. In this paper I outline how Bracha L. Ettinger's concept of the matrixial borderspace offers different variables for subjectivity. By adding the signififer of the womb to the Freudian/Lacanian phallogocentric subjectivity model, she invites us to think of subjectivity not only as the result of separation, negation and a negative sexual difference, but also in terms of connectivity, mobility and (trans)subjectivity.
