In contrast, this work specifically focuses on “marked” absolute and partial interrogative acts (IA NO PIE/IP NO PDE), which are pragmatically conditioned by the situational context. The adopted methodology takes into account the Interactive-Functional Intonational Analysis (AIF) model proposed by Hidalgo (2019). This model extensively explores the diversity of linguistic uses of intonation, distinguishing two functional axes of prosodic performance (syntagmatic and paradigmatic) and two levels of interactive analysis (monologic and dialogic). According to the AIF model, “marked” interrogative contours are assimilated, on the one hand, to the Secondary Modal Function (within the Monologic Level) and, on the other hand, to Paradigmatic Dialogical Functions (within the Dialogic Level), which incorporate pragmatic aspects such as humor, irony, or politeness. Additionally, the AIF model incorporates the emotional component in the configuration of these “marked” interrogative contours. The results of this research, including descriptive statistical treatment, imply the existence of various prosodically differentiated pragmatic types of interrogative acts: thus, absolute interrogative contours are identified with an ascending toneme that reaches tonal levels significantly higher or lower than the speaker’s F0 average, and absolute interrogative contours with toneme inversion (descending instead of ascending: IA NO PIE). In the case of partial interrogative contours, analogous behaviors are found, i.e., contours with toneme that significantly varies in level compared to the speaker’s F0 average and partial interrogative contours with toneme inversion (ascending instead of descending: IP NO PDE). In conclusion, these findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the complexity of interrogative acts in pragmatic and intonational terms, revealing nuances beyond the superficial structure of language and providing a richer perspective on communicative interaction.

For example, vocalic lengthening at the end of a given word not only represents a form of expressive hesitation by the speaker, as it can also function as a pragmatic resource to «suggest» something to the listener or to prevent the speaker from appearing too «assertive»; thus, the pragmatic effect of this lengthening (prosodic phenomenon) will be oriented toward verbal politeness. Methodologically, we begin with the existence of three components in the prosodic domain: the segmental (phonemes and allophones), the suprasegmental (stress, intonation, and duration, which overlap with complex phonetic units such as the syllable, word, phrase, or sentence), and the paralinguistic (non-systematic phonetic phenomena derived from anatomical alterations in the oral, nasal, and pharyngeal cavities).

In this sense, the present work attempts to contribute a novel vision to this field through the application of a dialogical analysis model based on the functional diversity of intonation (Hidalgo’s interactive-functional model 2019). The corpus handled starts from real speech situations (colloquial conversations) that meet the required dialogic principle. A total of 581 interrogative acts were recognized and their acoustic analysis was carried out, focusing the description on absolute or total interrogative acts and on pronominal or partial interrogative acts, for whose identification the guidelines provided by the literature were taken into account. The basic prosodic characteristic of the absolute question is the Principle of Intonational Inclination (PII), and that of the partial question is the Principle of Intonational Declination (PID). For the prosodic study of both types of interrogatives, the extension of the melodic contour, its speed of speech and its duration have also been taken into account, carrying out a previous process of curve stylization based on the consideration of holistic contours, differentiated according to their percentage of ascent or descent. Four different groups of questions have been recognized: absolute interrogative contours PIE (IA PIE), absolute interrogative contours NO PIE (IA NO PIE), partial interrogative contours PDE (IP PDE) and partial interrogative contours NO PDE (IP NO PDE). Finally, the systematic application of statistical tools (box plot, standard deviation and decision tree) has allowed us to propose some recurrent prosodic features specific to IA PIE and IP PDE contours.

As a landmark, we start with 8 basic emotions (joy, confidence, fear, surprise, sadness, displeasure, anger and anticipation-interest) from Plutchik's star (1980), which we have reduced to 5 (joy, sadness, anger, fear and surprise) according to those that have appeared caused by the limitations of the corpus. According to previous research, the selected prosodic features are the contour of the melodic patterns with its final inflection; the register of the contour, that is, its F0 average; the overall intensity of the statement, that is, the average of this throughout the statement; and the speed of speech through the statement (act). From that point on, an acoustic analysis has been carried out and some provisional conclusions are offered.

We start from the hypothesis that the prosodic realization of certain markers in a given context, according to its particular F0 curve, its accentual realization, its phonic dependence, its position, etc., can condition its hierarchical-structural range. The corpus that has taken as base of the Val.Es.Co. Group (Briz and Val.Es.Co. Group 2002 and Cabedo and Pons, eds.)

In other words, prosody has been recognized as a decisive element to account for the functional richness of discourse markers. In this line, the DPDE (Particle Discursive Dictionary of Spanish: http://www.dpde.es/) includes among its descriptive elements a specific section on prosody. The aim of this article is to account for the functional versatility of some conversational markers on the basis of the prosodic features they can show in context, paying special attention to cases where they convey pragmatic attenuation. More specifically, we aim at describing the acoustic arrangement of markers such as bueno, hombre, ¿eh? y vamos when used as mitigators. The study draws on data from a corpus of conversation, Val.Es.Co (Briz & Grupo Val.Es.Co. 2002), which has been analysed acoustically paying attention to prosody. Our results so far suggest that this is a promising line of research, both theoretically and methodologically.

The purpose is to recognize the possible mitigation strategies of communicative acts. The analysis is based on a template (Briz and Albelda, 2013. Onomázein, 28, pp. 288–319; Albelda, Briz, Cestero, Kotwica and Villalba, 2014. Oralia, 17, pp. 7–62) in which five factor blocks distinguish betweenmitigation functions, linguistic procedures of mitigation, structural factors, enunciative factors and situational factors. Our purpose is to consider the implication of the phonoprosodic component, so that we focus on the second block of factors of the mentioned template (“Linguistic Procedures of Attenuation”). One of the 22 linguistic (and non-linguistic) mitigation tactics that are included in this block refers to the use of prosodic, paralinguistic or gestural elements in the expression of mitigation. However, this tactic must be developed to better assess the weight of prosodic features in mitigation. For this purpose we have used the methodology of a previous research project, Fonocortesía project, where segmental and suprasegmental parameters (F0, intensity, duration, melodic curve and pause, among other parameters) were used in order to analyze the expression of verbal (im)politeness (since mitigation is in fact, a frequent form of politeness). The objective of this work is, finally, to develop the methodology of the prosodic component in mitigation expressions, and to describe and specify this function through verifiable acoustic parameters.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to reflect on the use that professionals make of legal language in the courthouse, with a view towards offering some proposals for improvement. Towards that end, the first two sections consider some proposals to optimize legal language that were implemented in Spain and other European countries. In this sense, it is worth pointing out that most of the initiatives have neglected the oral aspect of language, focusing fundamentally on written language. This being the case, basing its findings on the corpus of texts analyzed, this study describes some frequent problems that interfere with a clear and efficient use of oral language in legal discourse; the various examples are accompanied by proposals for improvement that are explained in the corresponding section. A novel aspect of the present study is the specific attention it pays to the vocal, sound-producing component of oral discourse in the courtroom, in accordance with the contributions included for the area of oral language in the Report of Recommendations from the Commission for the Modernization of Legal Language (Ministry of Justice, 2011). Finally, we propose some ideas that aim to help render this discourse more comprehensible, thereby facilitating the professional exercise of law and the relationship between justice and the citizenry.

This would explain why the markers present “interesting properties regarding intonation” and why “tonal flexibility allowed to drive very nuanced way inferences” (Martin Butragueño, 2003). One of these contextual features would be precisely the expression of values (un) courteous. For our research we take as a reference corpus colloquial conversation, discursive field where sociopragmatic manifestations of the (dis) courtesy develop a wide range of shades and whose expression through discourse markers has barely begun to be studied. The reason for this methodological decision is obvious: although dialogicality be a issue that crosses the enunciative modes, conversation is the prototypic incarnation, as has the presence of partners face to face involved simultaneously in the context of a relationship interpersonal which it is built along the interaction (Landone, 2009: 134). In order to be more precise, and because of the particular idiosyncrasies of our object of study, we have restricted this study to a group of specific markers, focusers of otherness (Martin Zorraquino and Portolés, 1999) or metadiscursive markers of contact control (Briz, 1998), whose most common functions are located in a dialogic framework and a relational level (Landone, 2009: 140, 157-158) and, within them, the four markers mentioned in the title. Our ultimate purpose is therefore to clarify whether, depending on your specific phonic realization (segmental and / or suprasegmental), these focusers of otherness contribute to the process of (un) courteous modalization of utterance; if this were the case could be considered to some extent, the application of this methodological approach in the study of other markers

Sections 2, 3 and 4 present several theoretical concepts which are especially relevant for understanding im/politeness in concrete frameworks (mainly in conversation). Section 5 points out the necessity of studying a pragmatic phenomenon like im/politeness with its prosodic expression. Finally, section 6 discusses some studies in this field on different languages, with a special focus on prosodic values like the F0 (pitch/fundamental frequency), intonation patterns, duration and speech rate.

We start from the hypothesis that the prosodic realization of certain markers in a given context, according to its particular F0 curve, its accentual realization, its phonic dependence, its position, etc., can condition its hierarchical-structural range.

We offer a kind of "general state of the art"; we tried thus exposing any conclusions or results of previous empirical work staff, but noted some of the newer ways of inquiry available. Our perspective understands prosody as a whole suprasegmental phenomena, the most representative of which conversational level (but not only) is the intonation. In this regard, synthetic outlines a framework to clarify what were the different orientations of the studies have resulted in intonation and how conversational approaches.

Overcoming such interference is one more of the many challenges facing the teaching-learning intonation of a foreign language and, of course, the Spanish case is no exception to this. In this paper, therefore, a state of affairs concerning the proposed topic is presented and at the same time, is proposed as an alternative to working for a timely incorporation of intonation component in teaching of Spanish Foreign Language that, from the Curricular Plan of Institut Cervantes, integrates methodological actions usually applied with a more communicative approach that acknowledges the teaching and study of conversational intonation. In any case, this should be seen as a further contribution among others, to try to help clarify the problem.

As is well known, phonetics and phonological description includes both the study of the segments ... more As is well known, phonetics and phonological description includes both the study of the segments and the suprasegmentals: my contribution will be limited to the scope of suprasegmental elements, more precisely the intonation. One of the first problems we face in dealing with the description of the intonation of a language, in our case of Spanish intonation, is to be able to differentiate the phonological than phonetic, the contingent of the essential, the variable of the constant... It is not easy to tell with a certain intonation fact, what's standard, systematic tool of language, and that individual or casual and therefore not necessarily consistent. In the first case we are considering a fact of intonational phonology, and the second one of intonational phonetics. Thus, since the first scientific studies of intonation (mainly along the second half of the twentieth century) has been considering a methodical doubt: What should be the prospect that substantiates the description of intonation, the phonetic-inductive, or maybe the phonological-deductive? Despite everything, when we use the language we use curves or melodic patterns that fully meet their inherent communicative role, that is, its functional role. In this respect, we will review some of the approaches described in intonation more widespread, with the intention to illustrate the arguments for or against one and another perspective; we advocate the need to start from a functional perspective, adequate to differentiate the inherent heterogeneity in intonation. This perspective inevitably phonetic-inductive base, rests on the distinction between an axis of linguistic relations (intonational, to be exact) syntagmatic and paradigmatic: on them is projected functional mixture of intonation, understood as a cluster of resources (mostly gradual in nature), whose description (phonetics and / or phonological) faces necessarily multiple challenges.

Additionally, the AIF model
incorporates the emotional component in the configuration of these “marked” interrogative contours. In conclusion, these findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the complexity of interrogative acts in pragmatic and intonational terms, revealing nuances beyond the superficial structure of language and providing a richer perspective on communicative interaction.
by the speaker, as it can also function as a pragmatic resource
to «suggest» something to the listener or to prevent the speaker from
appearing too «assertive»; thus, the pragmatic effect of this lengthening
(prosodic phenomenon) will be oriented toward verbal politeness.
Methodologically, we begin with the existence of three components in
the prosodic domain: the segmental (phonemes and allophones), the
suprasegmental (stress, intonation, and duration, which overlap with
complex phonetic units such as the syllable, word, phrase, or sentence),
and the paralinguistic (non-systematic phonetic phenomena derived
from anatomical alterations in the oral, nasal, and pharyngeal cavities).
For the prosodic study of both types of interrogatives, the extension of the melodic contour, its speed of speech and its duration have also been taken into account, carrying out a previous process of curve stylization based on the consideration of holistic contours, differentiated according to their percentage of ascent or descent. Four different groups of questions have been recognized: absolute interrogative contours PIE (IA PIE), absolute interrogative contours NO PIE (IA NO PIE), partial
interrogative contours PDE (IP PDE) and partial interrogative contours NO PDE (IP NO PDE). Finally, the systematic application of statistical tools (box plot, standard deviation and decision tree) has allowed us to propose some recurrent prosodic features specific to IA PIE and IP PDE contours.

Additionally, the AIF model
incorporates the emotional component in the configuration of these “marked” interrogative contours. In conclusion, these findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the complexity of interrogative acts in pragmatic and intonational terms, revealing nuances beyond the superficial structure of language and providing a richer perspective on communicative interaction.
by the speaker, as it can also function as a pragmatic resource
to «suggest» something to the listener or to prevent the speaker from
appearing too «assertive»; thus, the pragmatic effect of this lengthening
Finally, the systematic application of statistical tools (box plot, standard deviation and decision tree) has allowed us to propose some recurrent prosodic features specific to IA PIE and IP PDE contours.
markers can be crucial for their accurate interpretation in context. In other words, prosody has been recognized as a decisive element to account for the functional richness of discourse markers. In this line, the DPDE (Particle Discursive Dictionary of Spanish: http://www.dpde.es/)
includes among its descriptive elements a specific section on prosody. The study draws on data from a corpus of
conversation, Val.Es.Co (Briz & Grupo Val.Es.Co. 2002), which has been analysed acoustically paying attention to prosody. Our results so far suggest that this is a promising line of research, both theoretically and methodologically.
linguistic, structural, enunciative and situational levels, in discursive corpus of Spanish. For this purpose we have used the methodology of a previous research project, Fonocortesía project, where
segmental and suprasegmental parameters (F0, intensity, duration, melodic curve and pause, among other parameters) were used in order to analyze the expression of verbal (im)politeness (since mitigation is in fact, a frequent form of politeness). The objective of this work is, finally, to develop the methodology of the prosodic component in mitigation expressions, and to describe and specify this function through verifiable acoustic parameters.

Our perspective understands prosody as a whole suprasegmental phenomena, the most representative of which conversational level (but not only) is the intonation. In this regard, synthetic outlines a framework to clarify what were the different orientations of the studies have resulted in intonation and how conversational approaches.
- (des)integran los elementos discursivos
- comunican ideas con sentido
- transmiten una fuerza ilocutiva específica
- generan efectos pragmático-contextuales que debe/n validar nuestro/s interlocutor/es: atenuación, intensificación, (des)cortesía, ironía, humor, emociones, etc.
Estas capacidades pueden ser +“convencionales” o – “convencionales”:
A) +convencionales (intencionales) :
