mystify the reality and to illustrate the discursive resistance expressed by residents and residents’ associations. We will shed new light on how conventionalized metaphors are
commonly accepted as natural ways of naming a reality, and therefore function as a powerful device for constructing consensus. In contrast, image metaphors and less conventionalized metaphors are not pervasive in all kinds of discourses, are not natural ways of naming a reality, and can lead to discursive subversion.

Firstly, it helps make complex issues understandable to the public, and secondly, it helps promote and legitimize the ideological viewpoints of particular groups. The main aim of this paper is to look into the Plan for Restoring the Islamic Wall in Barri del Carme (València, 2002) to show how the authors of the plan use metaphors to mystify the reality and to illustrate the discursive resistance expressed by residents and residents’ associations. We will shed new light on how conventionalized metaphors are commonly accepted as natural ways of naming a reality, and therefore function as a powerful device for mystifying the reality. In contrast, (one-shot) image metaphors and less conventionalized linguistic metaphors, are not pervasive in all kinds of discourses, are not natural ways of naming a reality and can lead to discursive subversion.

Don’t these exist as well. This lack of interest in the feminine is probably nothing other than a new example of the perpetuation of dominant androcentrism. In this article we want to reflect on this, on how hegemonic androcentrism has elevated the woman as object to woman’s ideal and how this metaphor continues to function in the organization of the collective imagination. In order to observe the cognitive and interactive mechanisms that control this representation, we adopted the functionalist perspective proposed by Kress and Van Leeuwen (1996) for the analysis of images to analyze a selection of advertisements that we found particularly relevant.

This awareness led to the celebration of the First International Conference on CDA (València 2004), where over three-hundred academics working in the field of Critical Discourse Analysis became actively engaged in this important issue.
The seven studies included in this volume have been selected as representative of those areas of human experience that have been given most intellectual attention and considered to be in fact in need for critical unravelling. Ethnic categorization in multicultural classrooms, patriotic discourse construction in Chinese readers, the denial of Palestinian identity in schoolbooks, the diverse constructions of European identities, Arabs constructing themselves on the worldwide web, identity construction in sexual assault trials, the representations of a dangerous ‘other’ in cases of PLWHAs, are the contextual perspectives embraced in this book to account for forms of power abuse in the discursive construction of identities.

We propose that these two kinds of restrictions are ranked on a language-particular basis, according to the postulates of Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky 1993). Then, the output for the clitic pronouns in Catalan will be the result of applying the Catalan hierarchy to the set of possible candidates consistent with every input.
