My research concerns late medieval judicial authorities in their social, political and cultural context. Basing myself primarily on records of judicial practice, I consider the way in which late medieval law courts constructed legal narratives about society and its 'proper' functioning, and communicated these to a broader public by oral, textual, ritual, symbolic, and other means. My research therefore involves a double approach: the critical analysis of legal discourse and an attempt to grasp the multifaceted communicative practice of judicial authorities. For my PhD-thesis I will be looking at three different law courts: the Council of Utrecht, the archiepiscopal court of York and the parliament of Paris. The geographical and contextual variety of these cases allows for a broad and comparative view of these courts' discursive and communicative practices. Special attention is and will be paid to aspects of (public) punishment, community building and the interaction of different communicative practices (textual, oral, ritual, spatial, etc.).
