This is most obvious in those of his plays which were based on a situation politically complimentary to Queen Elizabeth; in Camp aspe, Alexander is placed in a situation of temptation, thus providing the dramatic tension of the play; but although he resists the temptation as a monarch should, he suggests in the final lines of the play that the situation has not really changed:

Handwriting is more personal than the typewriter, the type writer more personal than a word processor, where we may suspect that our friends have cut and pasted bits from letters to others. The electronic screen can offer a significant counterbalance to this trend in that it offers an opportunity for the recipient to become more actively involved in the process of reading than is possible in on the fixed page. Not only can receivers control content through hypertext links, they can choose the format of display, specifying default fonts, font sizes, colours and so on. This paper will examine the increasing emphasis by Internet sites on the visual the graphic clickable map, animated logos and so on and a consequent loss of control by the end user. Many plug-ins are designed to display text, graphics, or video in a way that is rigorously controlled by the designer rather than the user (Acrobat and other data formats that specify font and font size are the ultimate here). Thus the degree to which the medium is interactive is being modified and restricted: we click to download another huge, intensively designed page, sending one signal upstream while vast bandwidth downstream is needed to respond to our tiny input. We are in danger of finding that the Internet is just another TV screen with a different remote control attached.

It was significantly revised, by Shakespeare or others, between its first two publications and was then succeeded by an adaptation that softened the ending so that Lear and Cordelia survived. In our own times it is performed around the world in productions that explore its relevance to contemporary political and environmental challenges. This edition offers an extensive performance history along with a distinctive “extended” text, taking the later Folio as a starting point and adding the lines that appear only in the Quarto.
