Translation English-Galician. Proposal of Comparative Stylistics
This thesis presents a new perspective on the academic study of translation, namely on the empirico-descriptive branch of what Holmes and Toury name as Translation Studies. We aim at accounting for the inclusion of Comparative Stylistics within the set of auxiliary disciplines to which the theoretical component of Translation Studies may resort to for the evaluation of translations. Nevertheless, the incoherences and bad results of stylistic studies in the past due to the lack of a purely translatological basis and to the use of incorrect methodologies, leads us first of all to acknowledge a need to reformulate the aims, methods and tools of the discipline in order to make them meet the requirements of Translation Studies.

Translation scholars have never had any source of descriptive data other than those provided by disciplines such as Contrastive Linguistics, Comparative Textology, etc. In spite of the fact that the object of study of these disciplines were actual translations, their aim was not the study of the translation neither as process nor as product nor its function. Translation Studies, therefore are in need of a proper descriptive branch that can both a) provide reliable data from direct observations of translation processes and translated texts; and b) be able to hypothesize on those data according to certain contextual parameters. These hypotheses will help either strengthen or falsify the theories developed within the theoretical branch of Translation Studies. We will try to account for the inclusion of Comparative Stylistics within Translation Studies as part of its descriptive branch, more specifically as a discipline which can study microshifts (i.e. shifts below the sentence level) in actual translations and relate them to specific contextual circumstances. In this paper we claim that Comparative Stylistics must have a place within the group of ancillary disciplines or tools which the theoretical branch of Translation Studies can use in order to asses and evaluate actual translation experiences. Nevertheless, the bad reputation of Comparative Stylistics —caused by its past wrong perspectives and methodologies— makes it necessary to redefine its aims, methods and tools in order to fit them to the ontological requirements of Translation Studies.

This revised edition of Memes of Translation includes updates that relate the book's themes to more recent research in Translation Studies. The book contributes to the debate about whether it is worth seeking a coherent theory of translation, by proposing an approach based on norms, strategies and values, which are all seen as kinds of memes, i.e. ideas that spread. The meme metaphor allows us to see translation in the context of cultural evolution, and also highlights similarities with the philosopher Karl Popper's analysis of another kind of evolution: that of scientific knowledge. A translation is, after all, itself a theory – a theory about the source text. And as Popper stressed, theories of all kinds are like nets we make in order to catch something of reality: never perfectly, but always in the hope of better understanding.

Alberto Álvarez Lugrís utiliza el concepto de paratraducción como instrumento de análisis para establecer qué elementos antropológicos se recuperan de la antigüedad gallega con el fin de conformar las identidades actuales. En las últimas décadas se ha producido una apropiación y paratraducción del celtismo y en este capítulo se describe la función que tiene en la identidad gallega actual. El autor desvela los argumentos ideológicos de apropiación del celtismo que hace el gobierno de la Xunta de Galicia, a través de sus empresas públicas, usando el mecanismo ideológico de desactivación política del nacionalismo gallego para convertirlo en algo «inocuo» frente al Estado desde el punto de vista político, pero con un rendimiento en el ámbito económico-empresarial. Se paratraducen ciertos elementos simbólicos en el sentido de anestesiar el discurso identitario nacional, pero se mantiene el elemento diferencial de Galicia frente al resto del Estado como marca comercial y/o reclamo turístico

De la misma manera que Gideon Toury (1995) considera que el texto original no es relevante para el estudio de las traducciones como fenómenos sociales de la cultura receptora, tampoco el texto traducido es imprescindible para detectar y analizar las actividades paratraductoras de los editores literarios. Tomando como ejemplo dos traducciones literarias publicadas en contextos
sociopolíticos e históricos completamente distintos, analizaremos el papel que los editores desempeñan en el juego de poderes y de identidades que se verifica en toda edición de traducciones. No solo la imagen del otro depende del equilibrio que se construya entre los poderes en conflicto
o en alianza, sino que incluso la imagen y la identidad como comunidad de los receptores puede
estar en juego.
