The examined group, according to oral traditions and historical sources, could be perceived as direct descendants of the societies which inhabited the upper Nakambé valley before Mossi migration in the 14th and 15th century CE. Nowadays, due to a high degree of acculturation, Nyonyosi have lost their cultural distinctiveness and have adopted the lifestyle and language of the newcomers. However, despite the passing of the centuries, some autochthonic elements have survived in the institution of the “earth priests” – tengsoba, which is reflected in the material culture. These include local ceramic art, objects linked to the worship and burials of tengsoba.
The article is an attempt to present the phenomenon of modern tengsoba burials as a connection between the present living culture and the archaeological culture. Main components of those burials, such as stone stela and clay coffi ns, are derived from forms found in Kurumba chiefdoms. In my search for analogies between the regions, I also use oral tradition, which has preserved information about migration from Lurum.

A lot of books and articles present activity of Polish crew. Some of them are also focused on a political reasons of this expedition. Even that sources describe well expedition frames and stories of its crew before and after the time of living there, our knowledge about their daily life on the Mondoleh Island is still surprisingly low. First European house on Mondoleh Island was built in early 80’s of XIX century by small group of Polish travelers and explorers: Stefan Szolc-Rogoziński, Leopold Janikowski and Klemens Tomczek. This building was located at the northern coast of island on a small rocky beach. According to its owners, it was the only place on the island where their house could be erected. After few years, Polish crew left Mondoleh Island, but the house was used (for a short time) by Sir Henry Hamilton Johnston – “vice-consul for the Oil Rivers and for the Cameroons”. In the mid of 1886 a new vice-consul’s house has been built at the northern summit of the island. Few months later, at the beginning of 1887, the remains of the old Polish house has been moved to Fernando Poo Island by Stefan Szolc-Rogoziński. Wooden and iron parts of the building have been reused for erect his new house at Santa Maria cocoa farm. In 1895 the German Governor Jesko von Puttkamer, who was strongly believe in healthy air on the island, bought the British house. This conviction led Germans to erect small sanatorium, mainly for the workers from Westafrikanischen Pflanzungs-Gesellschaft. In 1901 the capital of German colony has been moved to Buea, which was a place with far more better conditions for rising the sanatorium. Then, Mondoleh Island started to decline. Between 1909 and 1913/1914 German government established a leper settlement, which was probably disbanded during or after the First World War. This paper is an attempt to find the answers to the questions about conditions of life on Mondoleh Island and to recognize the history of the island before the Polish crew arrival and after the relocation of their house to Fernando Poo Island. I am strongly believe that this paper will be a contribution for future archaeological research on Mondoleh Island.

zone in West Africa. Both ethnographers and archaeologists can find
there abundant knowledge from numerous cliff-sites, but also from single
persons. Data collected from both branch of science could be useful
for reconstruction the history of settlement pattern. Despite those numerous
research works, Bandiagara region is still waiting for more detailed
thesis. Spread of the settlement and influence of external factors
for choosing those kind of inaccessible habitats, could be one of the main
unsolved questions. There is no doubt that Bandiagara escarpments
were being used by the local people, mostly as a defense places, quite
often far from fields or hunting zones. It is a common feature at many
similar sites from all of the world. We can use results of researches from
cliff-sites located in Mesa Verde region (USA) or in Europe and Asia. In
this paper we will focus on relations between villages and on similarities
between their structures. We will try to put the village into a wider
context and to focus on technical solutions. We believe that this comparative
study will show us new paths to understand the dynamics of settlement
pattern changes in case of Bandiagara escarpment.

Resulting from the collaboration of four major institutions of French archaeology abroad: the Section française de la direction des Antiquités du Soudan (Sfdas), the Institut français d’archéologie orientale (Ifao), the Institut français du Proche-Orient (Ifpo) and the Centre français de recherche de la péninsule Arabique (Cefrepa), it draws on the recent work of specialists from the Nile Valley, the Near East and the Arabian Peninsula to shed light on the theoretical reflections that have enriched ceramic studies in recent decades. Providing a genuine field tool, this volume is nonetheless a skilfully illustrated collection of the contribution of ceramic studies to the understanding of human history.
