experience its injustice, as well as the happiness it gives us. All this is reflected in art, music and literature; for human beings they are an alternative world – one that they create on their own but, at the same time, closely related to their everyday lives. We cannot tear ourselves away from it – if only because it is impossible. And this applies to all cultures of the world, because in their nature people are not as different from each other as it sometimes seems.
This book is a further proof of that. It is a description of fragments of the
represented world as seen through the eyes of Arab writers and poets of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Iraqi, Syrian, Lebanese, Egyptian, Omani, Tunisian and Algerian literature. In this way, we get an insight into different literary traditions, although they have a lot in common, as they derive from the common stem of classical Arabic literature. Of course, it is not a complete picture of what we can observe in literature, but it is a reflection of the research interests of individual authors, representing European and Arab scientific circles: British, Polish, Romanian,
French, Italian, Iraqi, Omani, Egyptian and Algerian.
The volume is the outcome of the International Conference on Modern Arabic Literature – between Myth and Reality, which was organized by the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Oriental Studies of the Universityof Warsaw on June 1–2, 2023.
Rozważania Autorów niniejszego opracowania bez wątpienia mogą stanowić zachętę do prowadzenia własnych badań, rozwijających podjęte tu zagadnienia.

Religion marginalised the old socialist or pan-Arabic ideas and again became an important element of social discourse and the new Arab identity. The popularisation of the Islamic ideology changed the categorisation of the Palestinian conflict from secular into religious. The article examines – on the basis of the novel Umar yazharu fi al-Quds by Nagib al-Kilani – the role which literature played in the process of building a new historical consciousness through the dissemination of Muslim symbols, terms and arguments.

In the Arab world the utilitarian and aesthetic functions stood hand in hand from the very beginning. In the 80s a movement described as “Islamic literature” emerged. This genre has a didactic function and aims at forming attitudes and moral behavior patterns that go in line with the rules of Islam. This paper analyses and models of heroes, who are inspired by the Prophet Muhammad and face modern dangers and challenges, resulting from the Western pressure.
"The panel addresses the issues of creative writing in Arabic countries throughout northern Africa including the rich literary tradition and modern national literatures written in Arabic but also in French (francophone literature) and English as well as the works by Muslim authors writing in Arabic in Saharan and sub-Saharan Africa with their variety, uniqueness and distinctiveness".

Noticing the need for developing an intercultural and interreligious dialogue, and being aware of a growing number of conferences and symposia that enable scientists to exchange views on issues related to the main problems of the modern world of Islam, the organizers of the Conference in Toruń decided to invite both respected researchers and young scholars to actively engage in discussions about the abovementioned problems.
Planning the 2nd International Conference on “The World of Islam in Research Perspectives of Arabic Studies and Political Science” is not only an attempt to initiate an academic debate, but also an opportunity to integrate the community of scholars dealing with the world of Islam.
Conference has an interdisciplinary character, all researchers representing different fields and disciplines are invited to participate in the initiative. We believe that only connecting two perspectives: Arabic Studies and Political Science allows to fully present the changes in the World of Islam, with its complexity and diversity. That is why we have designed our conference to be a platform for philosophers, historians, economists, political scientists, lawyers, as well as scholars working in a field of linguistics, literature, culture, religion, art, geography, security and international relations, to present their research on the World of Islam.
Location: Toruń, POLAND
Organization: Nicolaus Copernicus University
Conference Start Date: Mar 26, 2020
Conference End Date: Mar 27, 2020
