The world we live in is a part of us and we are a part of it. Every day we
experience its injustice, as well as the happiness it gives us. All this is reflected in art, music and literature; for human beings they are an alternative world – one that they create on their own but, at the same time, closely related to their everyday lives. We cannot tear ourselves away from it – if only because it is impossible. And this applies to all cultures of the world, because in their nature people are not as different from each other as it sometimes seems.
This book is a further proof of that. It is a description of fragments of the
represented world as seen through the eyes of Arab writers and poets of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Iraqi, Syrian, Lebanese, Egyptian, Omani, Tunisian and Algerian literature. In this way, we get an insight into different literary traditions, although they have a lot in common, as they derive from the common stem of classical Arabic literature. Of course, it is not a complete picture of what we can observe in literature, but it is a reflection of the research interests of individual authors, representing European and Arab scientific circles: British, Polish, Romanian,
French, Italian, Iraqi, Omani, Egyptian and Algerian.
The volume is the outcome of the International Conference on Modern Arabic Literature – between Myth and Reality, which was organized by the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Oriental Studies of the Universityof Warsaw on June 1–2, 2023.

Rozważania Autorów niniejszego opracowania bez wątpienia mogą stanowić zachętę do prowadzenia własnych badań, rozwijających podjęte tu zagadnienia.

The work presents articles discussing various subjects relating to literary, cultural borders and borderlands as well as their crossings with the Orient and the Occident. A broad, multifaceted scope of the volume draws the attention of readers to the problem of liminal spaces between cultures, genres, codes and languages of literary and artistic communication. The perspective of borderness proposed by orientalists, literary specialists, culture experts provide insights into multi-dimensional and heterogenic subjects and methods of consideration. The authors referring to, inter alia, comparative studies, theory of reception, intertextuality, transculturality of the East and West works touch upon themes such as coexistence, exclusion, crossing or the instability of borders. Also by taking into account identity issues, the interpenetration of various influences between different literatures, poetics and languages, the readers gain a broader context of intercultural dialogue between the Orient and Occident, what allow them to transgress barriers of a purely artistic, literary reception of the book contents. The volume – due to the abundance of proposed topics, its heterogeneous representations and manifold approaches used in analysis, discussion and (re)interpretations – is a debate’s record or a result of an academic reflection rather than a comprehensive monograph.

It is a well-known fact that Kitāb alf layla wa-layla (One Thousand and One Nights) has played an integral part in creating the image of the East and the Arab and Islamic world in the West. This article discusses the degree of influence that the One Thousand and One Nights has registered on Polish prose, poetry, and drama – a literature known for its stories, interpretations, and fables.

Since 1948, Palestinian topics have been adopted by writers from different Arabic countries and have acted as a kind of political manifesto. By 1967 they were dominated by secularist views, primarily nationalist and socialist. The defeat of the Arab armies in the war with Israel in 1967 was followed by an ideological crisis that, in later years, resulted in the rise of fundamentalist sentiments. Religion marginalised the old socialist or pan-Arabic ideas and again became an important element of social discourse and the new Arab identity. The popularisation of the Islamic ideology changed the categorisation of the Palestinian conflict from secular into religious. The article examines – on the basis of the novel Umar yazharu fi al-Quds by Nagib al-Kilani – the role which literature played in the process of building a new historical consciousness through the dissemination of Muslim symbols, terms and arguments.

Paraenetic literature encompasses didactic literature which promotes adequate and morally correct manner of action. One of the features of paraenesis is its normativism proposing models of ideal heroes, characteristic for a given social background. Paraenetic literature has its roots in Ancient Greece. In the subsequent centuries Christianity, drawing on the ancient canon of an ideal man, proposed moral values and ideal heroes hitherto unknown. At the same time, what Christianity did in the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque, was to develop new genres that aimed at conveying paraenetic content. The concept of the aesthetic role of literature as opposed to its utilitarian character was created as late as in Romanticism. In the Arab world the utilitarian and aesthetic functions have stood hand in hand since the very beginning. When literature began to develop in the Arab world, the utilitarian and aesthetic functions of a literary work were seen as mutually complementary. It was not until the Arab renaissance (Al-Nahda) in the 19th century that, under the influence of European ideas, some changes occurred in the perception of the role of a literary work even though they were limited to a small group of experimenters. Regardless of their ideological or political affiliation, prose writers, poets and playwrights treated their creative work as a continuation of the traditional mission. The 1980s saw a rise of fundamentalism and development of a new kind of literature, described as “Islamic literature” (al-adab al-islami). Its goal was to oppose the moral degradation promoted by secular literature imitating Western models on the one hand, and on the other, to shape attitudes and moral standards consistent with the principles of Islam. The article describes the cultural and socio-political context of the development of this movement, and analyses how the role and form of a literary work has been perceived and defined by theorists of Islamic literature as well as Arab authors and readers.

Paraenetic literature  encompasses didactic literature, which propagates adequate and morally correct manner of action. One of features of paraenesis is its normativism, which proposed models of ideal heroes, characteristic for a given social background. Paraenetic literature has its roots in Ancient Greece. In the Arab world the utilitarian and aesthetic functions stood hand in hand from the very beginning. In the 80s a movement described as “Islamic literature” emerged. This genre has a didactic function and aims at forming attitudes and moral behavior patterns that go in line with the rules of Islam. This paper analyses and models of heroes, who are inspired by the Prophet Muhammad and face modern dangers and challenges, resulting from the Western pressure.

Planned as a joint initiative of the units of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń: Jean Monnet European Studies Centre and Arabic Language and Culture Centre, as well as student organizations: Foreign Affairs Research Club and Arabic Students Club „Zahra as-Sahra” the international conference will focus on Arabic studies and political science perspectives on the research about the Islamic world. The Conference will address issues related to the historical, political, economic, cultural and social aspects of the academic interests about the Muslim world – from Marocco to South-East Asia, including Muslims in diaspora.
Noticing the need for developing an intercultural and interreligious dialogue, and being aware of a growing number of conferences and symposia that enable scientists to exchange views on issues related to the main problems of the modern world of Islam, the organizers of the Conference in Toruń decided to invite both respected researchers and young scholars to actively engage in discussions about the abovementioned problems.
Planning the 2nd International Conference on “The World of Islam in Research Perspectives of Arabic Studies and Political Science” is not only an attempt to initiate an academic debate, but also an opportunity to integrate the community of scholars dealing with the world of Islam.
Conference has an interdisciplinary character, all researchers representing different fields and disciplines are invited to participate in the initiative. We believe that only connecting two perspectives: Arabic Studies and Political Science allows to fully present the changes in the World of Islam, with its complexity and diversity. That is why we have designed our conference to be a platform for philosophers, historians, economists, political scientists, lawyers, as well as scholars working in a field of linguistics, literature, culture, religion, art, geography, security and international relations, to present their research on the World of Islam.
Location: Toruń, POLAND
Organization: Nicolaus Copernicus University
Conference Start Date: Mar 26, 2020
Conference End Date: Mar 27, 2020
