Oriental literature

Walther Heissig (1913–2005) was certainly one of the most influential researchers on Mongolian, well thought of by his fellows and esteemed by his students. This edition of archive materials concerning Heissig's life and work (cited below as WH) is a good opportunity for this author to discuss some aspects of a future, possibly all-embracing biography of Heissig.

Probabilmente perché in Italia mancano scuole a livello universitario idonee a stimolare – come avviene per l'India, il Tibet, la Cina, il Giappone, per non citare che i paesi che più richiamano l'attenzione dei nostri orientalisti – l'interesse e lo studio della Birmania, delle sue genti, della sua civiltà, è già arduo attendersi di reperire, anche nelle migliori biblioteche, un minimo di opere fondamentali per iniziare una ricerca seria nel campo della birmanologia. Per ovviare a questa carenza, altrimenti inspiegabile, ho pensato di far cosa utile pubblicando la bibliografia che segue per offrirla al lettore interessato a questi studi, perché in poco tempo possa avere a disposizione un panorama bibliografico ch'io ho potuto ottenere soltanto a prezzo di non pochi anni di ricerche, soprattutto all'estero, spesso per la cortesia di autorevoli amici che mi hanno inviato a prestito opere della loro biblioteca o fornito utili indicazioni per poterle consultare.
Mi sembra, oltre a ciò, che in lavori simili non esista un corredo bibliografico così ricco e, credo, anzi, che molte opere qui citate siano state talvolta del tutto trascurate, forse perché ritenute superate dal tempo, mentre a parer mio, sono da ritenersi basilari per uno studio documentato.
Perciò mi auguro che il seguente “contributo ad una bibliografia generale sulla Birmania” sia accolto come il coronamento di tutto il lavoro, addirittura la base di esso.

With the death of Annemarie Schimmel on the 26th of February 2003, an epoch has truly come to an end in the dialogue between Germany and the Islamic world. This doesn’t mean that cultural dialogue as such will come to an end or break off, but rather that it will take on completely new, hitherto unknown forms, possibly differing greatly from our previous understanding of such involvement. These new aspects will be outlined after an attempt at more precise delineation of how cultural dialogue was comprehended during the epoch that has now concluded, an epoch initially shaped at the start of the 19th century with Annemarie Schimmel as its last great representative.

This volume is a selection of papers originally read in English at the fifth edition of the International Conference on “Orient in Literature – Literature of the Orient” (OLLO), which took place from 28 March to 29 March 2019 at the Faculty of Languages of the Nicolaus Copernicus University (NCU) in Torun.
